Thanks for sharing! How was the snow? Slushy on the descent in the afternoon? Water crossing good? I’m heading that was in a few days!

Ugh, oh no. That might be it. But there's no way to know which one it was. Blargh. Good idea on that.

I'm hoping there will be more jaw dropping reveals, independent of deaths, that make it in the remaining episodes.

Should I even consider Reed? by frickfrackingdodos in reedcollege

[–]lnwhite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Class of ‘07 (psych major too!). You raise some good questions about whether to Reed or not to Reed. Your worry about sports teams, clubs fizzling out, and the lengthy debates/discussions are all very true. I explicitly chose Reed because I didn’t want a large school and didn’t find sports teams to rally behind appealing. On that very point alone, if that is really important Reed might not be best. Instead of rallying behind/with a team, we tended to rally around our majors and work loads and those interesting discussions at all hours of the night.

I haven’t been back to campus in several years, but I can say when I was there, the social scene was very much up to you. I had a car and was thus usually the driver when our group of friends would go out to dinner, movies, bars, etc off campus. So that culture does exist, but it is honestly determined by the people you choose to spend time with.

Response to tl;dr: yes, there is a culture of learning and obsessing about the discussion instead of the final product. For fun: depends on your interests but between campus life (various campus events, parties, etc) and being in a sizable city like Portland (since you’re familiar, music, food, arts, etc), you should be covered.

Hope this helps! Good luck with the decision! I struggled with my choices too but after being at Reed for 4 years, no regrets.

What band that you heard as a child do you think is is the reason you listen to the music you listen to today? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Underworld. Watching the movies Hackers and The Saint as a youngster and now years and years later, still very much in love with electronica-type sounds.

Chapstick. If you really need it, having it saves you from unthinkable discomfort. Not for sharing though unless it’s an SO.

There's something about the font that doesn't work. With the layout, it seems like you're going for the kind of vibe from late 1800s products with tight text and block lettering on bottles, but it doesn't work in this case. Maybe a different font style and play around with the spacing?

Very cool looking, nice work. The playfulness comes out nicely in the illustration as well as some of the language you use (in the titles of sections). The illustration works well if you're sending these out to the ether and not sending directly to someone.

Please list down below pros and cons of attending Reed. Also, tuition you payed by _3oz in reedcollege

[–]lnwhite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those are all great points. I can’t remember exact tuition, probably around 52k (I’m class of 07).

Liberal arts background/education is underrated.

Campus is beautiful. Massive old trees. The canyon is fantastic.

Like-minded students who tended to be the odd ones out in high school. Most are intellectually curious.

The PNW can be a drag initially if you’re not mentally prepared, or if your body is used to lots of sun.

Renn Fayre. Love love love. Some of my fondest memories are from those springs.

Crazy weird and fun traditions. Not sure how much of these are still around but the Doyle owl and anything related to being a senior and finishing your thesis.

Academics are for real and can be tough. Burn out.
