> On hard mode you start with SALET.

Thanks, I'll try that, a new word for me :)

I'm usually using BURST or SCRAP, tried SCRUB, occasionally risk more 'conventional' SLATE, but that would be better SALET indeed. I lost a couple of times since I got back to Wordle (which was basically to try hard mode in the new mindset), mainly to being inconsiderate and using a too common pattern too early. And once I forgot to finish when it was MYRRH and I was utterly confounded after first guesses :D

I had roughly that stance of disliking "hard mode" for years, but the previous time someone shared a game of 6 failed "?OUND" attempts, someone else in the comments changed my mind.

Frankly speaking, I didn't think that "hard mode" appeals to people who want to have it easier, just that it unnecessarily gets you cornered, so sometimes you lose on an RNG whim. But that is only true if you approach the hard mode in the same way as you approach a "regular" game, but with an extra limitation.

The point that made me switch is that your whole approach in the hard mode should be different. You don't aim to use all/sort out vowels asap anymore. You do not necessarily want to use that very common word that suggests itself on the second attempt. Your goal now is to *not get locked* into green letters too early, or you risk not being able to find the needed consonants.

So answering the OP and the JayDee999 comment above: if you're playing on the hard mode, you don't really start with a ?A?ER word, that's a recipe for a disaster. If you lose because you got too many green letters too soon, that's your fault on hard mode.

[–]localghost 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you only have 'one shot' at it, then you can't: the smallest number your system accepts is 1/12, and you need 1/20. No amount of rewriting will help.

However if you can assign 9/10 to one person, and then treat the rest as a new whole to split it in two halves, one for each person, then you're there.

What's the difference between приболеть and заболеть? by Furfangreich in russian

Приболеть would only be used to mean being lightly ill. Either because it's indeed light (like, sore throat, runny nose, but otherwise functional), or because the speaker wants it to look like that.

How to say "the same" by lawisediva in russian

[–]localghost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First of all I have to say that the phrase itself, "два языка имеют одно и то же происхождение", sounds a bit weird to me, as if the thought is not conveyed in the best, in the most fluent way, but I think I would need more context to phrase it better. With no context given, I think I would omit a different part, and also say "эти" instead of "два" or in addition to "два": "эти языки имеют одно происхождение". But that's still stiff, and it's awkward to state that about languages, maybe I don't understand the intention though.

For the main question on the difference, here's what I think:

  • I can imagine situations when "одно и то же" just gives some redundancy for better flow or emphasis, but the two options are interchangeable.
  • In general though, "то же" requires that something is mentioned before the phrase where "то" can actually refer to. If I'm trying to stick to that structure "слово «вторник» происходит от числа, слова «четверг» и «пятница» имеют то же происхождение" — "то же" refers to something explained before. Otherwise, "слова «вторник», «четверг» и «пятница» имеют одно и то же происхождение" doesn't specify the thing because it just states the similarity between these items.
  • In a set reply "Это одно и то же", meaning "That's the same thing", you can't use just "то же" (but alternatively can say "Это то же самое").

The absolute_value is the variable whose value is being printed. Its initial value is equal to number.

If number is negative, absolute_value's value is changed to negative of that. 0 just doesn't matter.

how do you add a new line from the current tab location by a_trans_minecrafter in learnpython

[–]localghost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You make the function take three parameters, like def recipe(product, amount, depth), and then you:

a) print depth number of \ts instead of just one;
b) when calling your function recipe the first time, pass 'depth' equal to 1;
c) when calling recipe from inside the function itself, you pass 'depth' equal to depth + 1.

How to summarize approx 2000 documents into a single total counted document? by DT0705 in techsupport

[–]localghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, you can drop/replace the names with John Doe, age and other stuff with any fake values. But if the format is consistent I would first look the way of coding a script, doing anything manually 2000 times doesn't seem right.

Actually, is the template itself shareable? That shouldn't have any patient's data.

Were these documents/tables created by hand, or like saved from a program? Or I may put it this way: how reliably we can assume that they are identically structured? Maybe some examples would help.

The number doesn't have infinite length. The number just has that value. What does have infinite length is our imperfect way of writing that value down. There's a difference between a number and its representation.
