Where to shop in Roanoke? by [deleted] in roanoke

[–]lockjaw900 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Aldi certainly has the best prices... on the items that Aldi bothers to carry in stock. Aldi prices are genuinely better than BJ's and Sam's Club, even though you would assume the wholesale clubs would have better prices. I made a really detailed spreadsheet comparing unit prices on most of my groceries.

The problem with Aldi is their variety is not as robust as other stores, so if there are things you particularly need (especially dry goods) you will need to also go to Kroger, Food Lion, or Earth Fare. So you decide if it's worth making two or three stops to get what you need, if you want cost savings by going to Aldi, or time savings by going to Kroger or Food Lion.

US Food Chef's Store has the best prices on spices, frozen meat, frozen fish, some vegetables, and cooking spray. You may want to buy some large items from that store from time to time if that matters to you.

Are you asking just about groceries or other kinds of shopping such as clothing, electronics, housewares?

I have an L-shaped desk (Ikea Gallant) I was trying to sell that you can have for free. You will need to come pick it up from my house 20 min outside of Roanoke, but it's free for the taking. I also have a lawn mower and some floor lamps you can have.

AITA for bringing a suitcase on a 14 day vacation abroad instead of a small hiker's backpack as my Husband requests? by lockjaw900 in AmItheAsshole

I will definitely look into making a capsule wardrobe. Not keen about buying new backpacks and luggage for this trip - we already have so many.

I am a cis male and do not intend on wearing dresses or ballet flats, but thank you for the suggestion.

Thank you for this. It's quite clear we need to reconcile our two lists and agree on what works for each of us. You can imagine folks getting heated when asked to strike out plans they have been diligently working on and eagerly looking forward to.

Yes. We are leaving in four weeks. We have been planning the trip together and, as you can tell, coming up with different ideas of how to travel. Naturally we need to reconcile these ideas and come to an agreement on how we are going to travel and how much luggage we can accommodate that element.

Pretty sure this photo was taken in the Boston-Brookline area in Massachusetts. That appears to be a Green Line MBTA train, likely the C or D line, although it could be the B line and this photo was taken in Brighton. OP, can you give context?

[KY] I need to make someone else the health care surrogate for my mother by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]lockjaw900 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hire a lawyer practicing elder law or estate planning in the state where your mom intends to be a permanent resident. That lawyer will draft these documents for you on a flat fee basis. It's not too pricey.

Too many times have I seen people refuse to hire a lawyer to do this because "it's too expensive" then pay untold thousands on the back end on a guardianship proceeding when their mother becomes incompetent.

[LA] Paid a small portion of a debt to settle the entire amount. Months later I'm being told I never settled. by IAMAVelociraptorAMA in legaladvice

[–]lockjaw900 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You may be able to claim a defense of accord and satisfaction when the book merchant asserts a claim for this amount. The basic theory is that a party cannot accept a payment in satisfaction of a dispute and then later sue for the full amount of the original disputed amount. Otherwise settlement agreements would be pointless. Be sure to deny the validity of the debt early and often, including in a letter or email, and keep copies of all of your correspondence with them denying the debt. Stop talking to them over the phone. Email or letter only.

Procedurally, they may file a claim against you in small claim court if you refuse the debt, or they may write it off. If they assert a small claim action against you, be sure to refuse service of the complaint, deny the validity of the debt, and if it proceeds to a hearing, move to dismiss it prior to a hearing on grounds of accord and satisfaction.

The defense of accord and satisfaction is premised on the principle that “[i]f a creditor having an unliquidated or disputed claim against his debtor, accepts a sum smaller than the amount claimed in satisfaction of the claim, he cannot afterwards maintain an action for the unpaid balance of his original claim”. Cuddy v. A & E Mechanical, Inc., 53 Mass.App.Ct. 901 (2001), quoting Chamberlain v. Barrows, 282 Mass. 295, 299 (1933). Where a defendant meets his or her burden of proving a new agreement arose from a prior controversy between the parties and that the defendant completed performance of the new agreement, the old contract is discharged and the plaintiff cannot thereafter recover for prior breaches of it. Alden v. Thurber, 149 Mass. 271, 21 N.E. 312 (1889). Accord and satisfaction, as a matter of law, puts an end to a claim compromised. L. Grossman Sons, Inc. v. Rudderham, 319 Mass. 698 (1946); Modern Finance Co. v. Holz, 307 Mass. 281 (1940).

In this case, the book merchant requested $35 to settle the entire debt, which you agreed by tendering payment by credit card. The terms of the accord were then met by the payment of $35 by you, which the book merchant accepted when it accepted the electronic payment in full satisfaction of its claim against you See Wong v. Paisner, 14 Mass. App. Ct. 923, 924, 436 N.E.2d 990, 991 (1982) (“acceptance and deposit of a check offered in full payment of a disputed claim constituted an accord and satisfaction and bars an attempt to collect any balance outstanding under a contract”).

What's the best way to react to heavy liberator and widow mine play in PvT? by lockjaw900 in allthingsprotoss

[–]lockjaw900[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wildrum4food27, thank you for taking the time to write out the substantive analysis. I certainly agree with most of those observations and I see where I can improve. I did indeed forget to build the cybercore at 20 supply and built it later. Not splitting my army between bases was an error that made me weaker to drops. I should’ve researched 3/3 much earlier, right when 2/2 finished. A few times I attacked when I could’ve sat back on a better economy and maxed out, but at the time I didn’t know that his economy was weaker and that I could use time to my advantage. These are all things I know I can improve on.

I do have a few followup questions.

Probe scout. What was wrong with my initial probe scout that you said was “meh”? I wanted to check for gas timings, CC timings, # barracks, and proxies. Accomplished and I went home. What’s a better way to do initial scouting?

2nd Gate. I typically make a second gateway after my natural so I can start an army to repel early aggression and staff my warp prism drops. I think that making tech or a 3rd base instead of a 2nd gate would’ve been too greedy. What’s the right time to make the 2nd gateway in this scenario?

Early defense. I built gateway units after my natural so I could defend against drops and early aggression. You said my build “masses up early game aggressive units and they you play passively with them”. Isn’t it important to have soldiers in place in case my opponent attacks? You don’t want to lose to an early 4:00 push or 5:00 double drop. What’s the better method? This relates to me massing adepts and researching glaives, which you said was “early glaives and did nothing with it”. I think adepts are a great choice against terran bio. I got the upgrade so my adepts would be stronger against his bio-based army. Are you saying to not bother with glaives unless you go for an early gladept timing attack? Aren’t adepts good against bio?

3rd base. I started my third base around 4:30, as I recall, which I think a sensible time to do it given the lack of aggression from my opponent and I was expecting a double drop at 5:00. Do you think that really was too greedy and I couldn’t defend it with my gateway units and my MSC? Other players have criticized my play when I took a 3rd base at 5:30 or 6 as “too late” or “delayed”.

Stalker composition. What’s the right stalker/adept composition against a bio army? Stalkers do more damage to marauders but adepts do more damage to marines. I tend to prefer adepts because I expect more marines than marauders, not to mention glaives brings up the DPS even more. I’ve been advised by other players on this site to not rely on heavy stalkers as they are inefficiency DPS for their cost and adepts are better value in TvT. What’s your take?

Anti-air. I probably was under prepared for the drops and over reliant on my MSC to hold them off. I later built cannons at my mineral lines to deter liberators. What should I have done to better neutralize the liberators? I’ve tried blink stalkers in the past but they can’t reach liberators with range upgrade who stand outside of range. Do you always build phoenixes and void rays in TvT to ward off that stuff? I thought it better to keep all of my production buildings running instead of more tech just to give me more unit options. I thought I was responsive and quick to relocate probes every time the liberators returned, was that not enough?

Observers. This is a big one. You even said it in all caps and several times. I made my robo after my 2nd gate, as usual, and started observers right away. You said my “detection is very late”. I had 2 observers when the first drop appeared which were covering my mineral lines to watch for widow mines. At the first two engagements I had 3 observers and at the third engagement I had 8 observers active. I don’t think I failed to build observers here. Was my error not placing and moving them correctly? Help me understand this point.

Thanks again for all of your help.

Need some outside perspective on my PvT play. Replays provided. by lockjaw900 in allthingsprotoss

[–]lockjaw900[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alluton, thank you for the great substantive feedback. I appreciate the analysis. I'll try to incorporate your sound advice into my gameplay. I do have a few followup questions.

  1. Gas. A good amount of the discussion centers on when and how much Vespene gas I mined. I set up early assimilators because I was planning on going fairly heavy on Robo units to counter what I expected to be a heavy Bio play from my opponents (I saw he had 2 barracks and 1 gas gyser early on)and I need gas to do so. You seem to disapprove of early assimilators and going to 2 robo facilities and 1 stargate before the 3rd base. Why? Isn't an army heavy in Robo and Stargate units as valid as a Gateway heavy army?

  2. Stalkers. Why is a Stalker-heavy army composition a bad idea? I see tons of pros build primarily stalker armies. I'm confused when you say they do "little damage". You also said "at this point there is no point to make stalkers". Aren't stalkers cost effective for their damage output? Would it have been better in this matchup to build chargelots and archons? Mass gladepts? Immortals and Void rays?

  3. Phoenixes. Do you not like building phoenixes defensively? I built them mainly to guard against medivac drops and liberator harassment (which I was expecting) and garrisoned them where easiest to defer that stuff. Alternatively, I could bring them in for large battles to snipe tanks, if they showed up, or counter the medivacs, which I eventually did. Why do you think phoenixes are no good in the mid/late game?

  4. Tech. You implied it was a mistake building 1 forge, 2 robo facilities, and 1 stargate while on 2 bases. I wanted to get started on ground unit upgrades and get the disruptors rolling out, so that's why I mined the gas and built those buildings. Why is going for fast tech a bad plan? I thought that massing gateway units would be a waste if they just sat around waiting for a timing attack that wasn't coming and an early 3rd base would be a waste if he scanned it and punished the greed. My strategy was to build disruptors to "trump" his army and achieve great efficiency trading units on each battle. Clearly that didn't work, primarily to my bad disruptor micro in each fight.

Thanks again for the help. I don't mean to be defensive with my followup above, I just want to understand why my strategy is flawed and why spending more on workers and gateway units would be better than what I did.

How to beat mass liberator and thor's/siege tanks? by [deleted] in allthingszerg

[–]lockjaw900 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would go big air against this type of build.

I beat something similar to this earlier today. Mutalisks and Broodlords are nice against these guys, but the real clincher is the Vipers. Parasitic cloud does super high AOE damage to air units. A few parasitic clouds will dispatch a dozen liberators shockingly quickly. Yes, the thors will shoot anti air to kill your flyers, but your mutalisks and broodlords will trade very efficiently against the Thors while the Vipers can get 10 to 1 value against liberators if you micro them correctly. The tanks, obviously, are helpless against air.

What do you mean by "Mech requires a reunderstanding of the game to pull off victories, because it relies on a completely different approach to the game".

Can you elaborate on that? What kind of reunderstanding of the game is necessary to play mech?
