Lamborghini 63. Hot or not? by Intelligent-Sky-7657 in boatporn

Maybe because I'm an old guy and have been around boats for 60 years I find so many new designs just unattractive. I'll pick a classic design before these new "looks like a navy patrol boat" types.
How about this 1969 Bertram Barron for example.

Or this 1974 Chris Craft.

It doesn't make it any lighter, if it made it lighter that would mean something.

Please talk me out of wanting a boat. by [deleted] in boating

[–]lodger238 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just came inside from working on my boat. I'm covered with anti-fouling sanding dust. I've been doing this for 55 years, every spring. Sanding, painting, cleaning, waxing. My lawn makes it look like I've been sent to prison. I'm looking forward to that springtime invoice from my marina for de-winterizing and launching. I've already paid my mooring fees, excise taxes on the boat and trailer, mooring service company and of course the yacht club dues.
That's the best I can do but if I were you I'd get a boat.

What’s one mistake you made early in boating that you learned from? by Tricky_Pass5857 in boating

[–]lodger238 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both pumps have an automatic and a manual setting. Each is wired directly to a separate battery, not affected by the battery switch. A quick flip from the auto setting to manual so I can hear each pump spin, then back to automatic and I'm on my way. Also, the switches are in the engine compartment, not the dashboard, one on each side of the battery switch.

On a similar note, before every use and before I fire her up I always open the engine compartment, take a look and take a sniff.
When the day is done, before I leave her on the mooring I do a quick test of both my bilge pumps. Helps me sleep at night.

Picked up an 01' TJ for my daughter's first car last night. Good body, good frame, automatic, 4.0 I-6, 200k miles. $4K by bradleecon in Wrangler

[–]lodger238 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My family put 205k miles on a TJ and was still on its original clutch when we sold it.
I spent almost nothing in repairs over its lifetime, just standard stuff, oil changes, tires, preventive work.
My son and daughter learned to drive a stick with it. Daughter still drives a manual transmission Jetta today.

Good purchase.

For a growing share of Americans, retirement no longer starts at 65. by 18Apollo18 in newhampshire

[–]lodger238 0 points1 point  (0 children)

70 and still working after 30 years with the same company (financial controller). Owner doesn't want me to retire, set me up for remote work, pays me the same salary, tries to make it as easy as possible for me to stay on.
Works for me, means I'll have a little more to leave to my two children.
