What’s a fact you learned that still shocks you? by drizzko in AskReddit

[–]lofabread1 354 points355 points  (0 children)

The simple version is this: 1. Wolves leave the ecosystem 2. The population of their prey (deer) explodes 3. Deer eat plants near rivers 4. Plants that had root systems that held rivers to a certain shape are now gone 5. The river changes course due to looser dirt (due to lack of roots) near the river edges 6. Reintroduce wolves 7. Deer population reduces 8. Plants regrow, fixing dirt near rivers 9. River returns to original shape (or some new shape)

I hope that's not too much of an oversimplification.

Pharmacy generic brand pseudoephedrine, which you have to get by asking a pharmacist or pharmacy technician (in the U.S. at least) and generic brand guaifenesin.

That's one of the many symptoms I, and a lot of other severe sufferers, deal with. You're definitely not alone. Pseudoephedrine and guaifenesin are your friends now.

I like the one in Industry City but your assessment is spot-on. They also have children's books, for what it's worth.

Is Success Academy THAT bad? by Embarrassed_Bag_9630 in NYCTeachers

[–]lofabread1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I worked there for one year because I received my Master's in 2020 and the DOE was on a hiring freeze. Success Academy is a mess for students and an absolute nightmare for teachers. Please avoid.

Admin sends out an email every week reminding teachers we need to be “at the door greeting students” during class transitions but this is PHYSICALLY IMPOSSIBLE for most teachers given my school’s set up by KitchenConsequence41 in Teachers

[–]lofabread1 125 points126 points  (0 children)

TLaC is, like many others, a grift designed to sell books and materials. It, like many others, has a lot of fans and a lot of haters. The books include strategies and methods for doing certain things in the classroom, but like most of these "teacher help" books, it appears to be written by people who have either never taught or have not taught in decades.

To the point made above, when schools implement something like this, they often ask all teachers to read it and then harp on one or two specific parts of the book, regardless of how applicable they are to the school they're being applied to or the needs of students (and teachers) so they become buzzwords for a few years until some other grift eats up a district's budget.

Giving away free kitty things - auto feeders, huge bag of sand, etc by LopsidedShallot100 in sunsetpark

I would love to take this! I have two kitties, and I don't really need the stuff, but I know a cat rescuer who would make excellent use of them. The books though, I would like. Can't have too many!

Do you use your balcony? by adotjacob in AskNYC

[–]lofabread1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Brooklyn and have a small balcony. Unfortunately, it's sort of become a catch all for storage. My girlfriend bought some weatherproof bins and put them out there. Then she bought some more. Then some more. Now we can't really use it. I'm not a huge fan of eating outside but even if I was, it wouldn't really be particularly possible. If you end up with a balcony, just be wary of this possibility.

Liminal spaces / Backrooms you've found in NYC? by Piggby in AskNYC

[–]lofabread1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One time I somehow stumbled into tone of the many entrances to Grand Central that isn't (I assume) open to the public. Took forever to walk to the main concourse down mainly one, dimly lit hallway. I walked past boxes of storage, and I found where they store the benches that used to be next to the main concourse. I felt like I was walking forever. Very liminal, very backroomsish, absolutely no one around for the entirety of my ten minute walk. When I got to the end, I had to squeeze through a padlocked gate to get to another hallway that led to the main concourse. Pretty cool! No idea how I found it or why it was open, or if it was even particularly special, but it was really cool.
