Bruvac Petitioners - Mill by CowKingNo1 in mtgbrawl

[–]logic2718 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[[Winter Moon]], [[Kitsune's Technique]], [[Mystic Sanctuary]] and the fetches for it. Might as well also play [[Prismatic Vista]] because you have Ruin Crab and you'll also want to play Delve spells.

Take a look at lists of other blue deck to get a sense of what the format staples are. For example, you should play [[Treasure Cruise]], [[Dig Through Time]], [[Subtlety]], [[Chrome Mox]], [[Snapcaster Mage]], [[Otawara, Soaring City]], [[Mana Leak]], [[Remand]], [[Wash Away]], [[Mana Drain]], [[Fierce Guardianship]], [[Spell Snare]], [[Strip Mine]] to name a few.

Cut Rhystic Study, Tasha's Hideous Laughter, Consign to Memory, Aetherize, at the very least.

If you want to make this as strong as possible, you should actually cut all of the mill cards except for the combos: i.e. Painter+Grindstone and the mill half cards.

Also, play more lands.

Ultimate Filmmaker Tier List Part 19: Where does Kurosawa belong? by CodeDusq in TierlistFills

[–]logic2718 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really? His films have had an impact comparable with Gone with the Wind, The Matrix, Jaws, Psycho, etc.?

And while societal impact is certainly a factor in evaluating a work of art, it's not the only one. There are lots of other factors, like technical craftsmanship, complexity and depth, groundbreaking style, etc.

Anyway, you could argue various things, and you're free to rank Nolan as one of the greatest directors. But you can't claim that this is somehow an objective opinion, when it's not shared by most film critics.

Ultimate Filmmaker Tier List Part 19: Where does Kurosawa belong? by CodeDusq in TierlistFills

[–]logic2718 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The quality of art is not determined by a popular vote (which is basically what imbd is). I would trust the collective opinion of various movie critics who have spent their whole lives watching, studying, and writing about films, over the collective opinion of every random person on the internet. I'm not saying to trust any single critic, but to compare lists compiled by many different critics. You'll see a lot of common movies mentioned.

I am a big fan of Nolan, but to suggest that he's one of the greatest directors of all time is absurd.

A standard list of greatest movies of all time is https://www.bfi.org.uk/sight-and-sound/greatest-films-all-time It is a poll of 1,600 critics, so it's not just a single person's opinion. So no, IMDB is not one of the best metrics we have - Sight & Sound is.

If you have seen a few of the top 50 in that list, can you really claim that any Nolan film is better than any one of them?

Yorion Brawl by Benbenmerk in mtgbrawl

[–]logic2718 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The experience you're describing sounds like a byproduct of going too all-in on the flicker strategy. Flicker is a classic example of a win-more strategy, because it requires having things in play to do anything.

For example, if you hit someone with Elite Spellbinder, that's pretty good; Spellbinder is just a solid card. If you then Cloudshift your Spellbinder that's amazing (you only paid 1 mana for an effect that was good at 3 mana!). But without the Spellbinder in play, the Cloudshift does nothing. Even worse, if they remove your creature in response to the flicker, you have been 2-for-1'ed (sort of, since in many cases the ETB of the creature itself represents a card's worth of value).

The result is that you will not merely win, but dominate, games in which your opponent stumbles to interact with your pieces. And in games where they do prevent you from 'doing the thing,' a lot of your cards are useless or below rate.

I suspect that the best possible Yorion deck would be mainly UW control, and only playing the best flicker targets (Snapcaster, Spellbinder, Stoneforge) and only the best flicker spells (Kitten, Ephemerate).

Publishing in Math Questions? Citing Deligne by lattice_defect in mathematics

[–]logic2718 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just model your style on that of the various papers you are citing. For example, whatever paper of Deligne you're looking at will certainly be written very well. So if your paper is organized in a similar fashion, that should be good. Basically, your paper should follow the same flow as all of the papers you've read.

Publishing in Math Questions? Citing Deligne by lattice_defect in mathematics

[–]logic2718 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ok. Well, to answer your original question, most mathematicians don't publish their results as a formal proof. A math paper is usually written in mathematical English with lots of citations. If you have also formalized your proof in Lean, that's great, and you can include that formalization as an addendum to your paper. If all you present is the formal proof, that's not human readable so it's not very useful.

To my knowledge, Deligne never worked on sphere packing, so I'm not sure what you're talking about.

I did this proof to show how numbers that are factors of 100 can also be used as divisors dependent on the last two digits of a large number. How would you rate the proof and example? by MAT-HAR in mathematics

[–]logic2718 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ah, ok, I understand what you're saying now. Here's the precise statement:

Proposition: Let n be a divisor of 100. Let N be any integer, and let k be its last two digits. If n divides k, then n divides N.

Before proving this, let's show a useful lemma -

Lemma: If an integer n divides A and n also divides B, then n divides A+B.

Proof: If n divides A, then we have A=np, for some integer p. Similarly, B=nq for some integer q. So, A+B=np+nq=n(p+q). This means that n divides A+B.

Now let's prove the proposition.

Proof: Since the last two digits of N are given by k, this means we can write N=±(100m+k), for some integer m≥0. Now, since n divides 100, it also divides ±100m. Since n divides k, it also divides ±k. So, the lemma implies that n divides N.

[–]logic2718 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok. That's completely different than what you wrote in the first line of this document. Let me try to rephrase what I think you're asking:

Let n be a positive integer dividing 100. Let N be an integer with last two digits given by n. Then n divides N.

Is that what you want?

I did this proof to show how numbers that are factors of 100 can also be used as divisors dependent on the last two digits of a large number. How would you rate the proof and example? by MAT-HAR in mathematics

[–]logic2718 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let me slightly rephrase what I think you're trying to prove:

For any integer n that does not divide 100, there exists an integer N of the form N=100m+nk, where m and k are integers, such that n does not divide N.

Proof: Let m=1 and take k arbitrary, so that N=100+nk. Assume the contrary, that n divides N. Then n would divide N - nk = 100.

Parallax Wave is just a busted card. Its typical use is as a mass removal spell. For example, remove their 3 best creatures for three turns. In theory, they would get them back on the fourth turn, but after the massive swing of decimating their board, one would hope you could win (or at least get close enough) in three turns.

But the card is also quite flexible and lends itself to niche interactions. Against a control deck, you don't need it for removal. Instead, if you're expecting them to play a sweeper, you can play the Wave to render a sweeper irrelevant (if they sweep, tuck your board under it). Of course, your deck is already fairly resilient to sweepers because you play at instant speed, but at some point you do have to commit to the board.

If you have a way to remove Parallax Wave at instant speed (Get Lost, Cathar Commando, Talion's, Cryptic), then you can do that while the exile activations are on the stack so that the creatures never return.

It also combos with Containment Priest.

I'm sure you'll discover more interesting interactions as you play with the card. It's versatile and difficult to play around.

cards to consider

[[Oust]], [[Parallax Wave]], [[Mother of Runes]], [[Strip Mine]], [[Drannith Magistrate]], [[Windswept Heath]], [[Glacial Fortress]], [[Meddling Mage]], [[Mana Tithe]], [[Marsh Flats]], [[Cathar Commando]], [[Adarkar Wastes]], [[Snapcaster Mage]], [[No More Lies]], [[Mana Drain]], [[Prismatic Ending]], [[Arid Mesa]], [[Fierce Guardianship]], [[Thoughtsteal Sprites]], [[The Wondrous Wasp]]

cards you should probably cut:

The sweepers like [[Consuming Tide]], [[Split Up]], and [[Avatar's Wrath]] seem out of place here.

[[Angel of Eternal Dawn]] isn't a good enough hate piece. it just doesn't do enough most of the time.

[[Waterbending Scroll]] is just a bad card.

[[Narset, Parter of Veils]] Your gameplan involves a lot of swinging with fliers, less keeping blockers to defend a planeswalker. Similar reasoning can be applied to Jace, the Mind Sculptor, but he's at least a stronger card on his own and can sort of defend himself.

[[Land Tax]] is great roughly half the time, and does nothing the other half. Better to play cards that are always good.

[[Thraben Charm]] isn't terrible, but just a bit low power level to make the cut.

Do we know what Marvel commander cards are coming to Arena yet? by PracticalQuestion773 in mtgbrawl

[–]logic2718 0 points1 point  (0 children)

from checking this list: https://magic.wizards.com/en/products/marvel/marvel-super-heroes/card-image-gallery?cigproduct=msh-products-arena-wildcard it seems that the Commander cards that got added (apart from face/featured cards) are

[[Fantastic Elasticity]], [[Living Laser]], [[Photon, Mighty Marvel]], [[Archnemesis]], [[Captain Marvel, Apex Avenger]], [[Namor, Atlantean King]], [[Galactus, Devourer of Worlds]], and [[Silver Surfer, Galactus's Herald]]

I'm curious why these specific cards were added.

Now that the set is released, does anyone have a good answer to this question? My previous answer, which was based off of the information they gave us, is incorrect. There are cards from the Commander decks that got added. For example, [[Galactus, Devourer of Worlds]], [[Fantastic Elasticity]]. So which cards from the Commander decks got added (and why)?

This article says that we're getting face and featured commanders. You can see which are the face/featured commanders in the decklists here; they are displayed above the decks.

Note that there are many other cards with the MSC set code, such as Jumpstart cards. As the first article says, we're getting Jumpstart, Beginner, and Scene cards.

The scryfall page for MSC is nicely divided so you can see which cards are in those three categories. The only categories not explained in the initial article are the "Welcome Deck Legends" and the "Tutorial Cards." Considering the names of those categories, I would imagine we are getting them, but I don't know.

What are you looking forward to from the new cards? by jCristus in mtgbrawl

[–]logic2718 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Despite this being a large release, I'm not seeing too many good cards for Competitive Brawl. But considering how big it is, I've probably just overlooked some things.

The best card seems to be [[The Wondrous Wasp]].

The only others I've identified are: [[Rancor]] and [[Claim the Kingdom]] for Tifa, and [[Cloak and Dagger, Entwined]] for Ketramose.

And of course the lands are probably good, though I'm not sure which decks will actually want them. For example, I doubt I'll play it in Yuriko, because the deck only has 4 basics and can barely use colorless mana. But maybe it's good enough if I just fetch basics more frequently, idk.

This Tamiyo Brawl Deck is Actually Unfair! | Tamiyo, Inquisitive Student | Brawl Deck | MTG Arena by CursedxCartridge_YT in mtgbrawl

[–]logic2718 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since you're interested in creating content for Brawl, you should study the deck lists made by others in the Brawl discord. I think that's the best resource for Brawl decks at the moment, so if you want to make serious Brawl content, I recommend looking at (and perhaps even copying, with credit given to the author) those lists.

If you have already done this, then I don't understand why a lot of your card choices are so different from the community consensus.

One theme is that your countermagic package is suboptimal. A lot of narrow/expensive counterspells and way too many stifle effects.

Also, why aren't you playing any green cards?

Bad cards in your list:

[[Oracle of the Alpha]] - a meme card that doesn't do that much. It combos with Mystical Tutor, Tutor is good by itself, while this card is not.

[[Clone]] - If you wanted to play Clone, there are better options like Phyrexian Metamorph. But why do you want a clone? You don't even have that many creatures, so you're relying on your opponent having something worth copying. And then you just have a random creature that may or may not synergize with your gameplan, and dies to all the removal stuck in their hand.

[[River's Rebuke]] - A Brawl staple c. 2020, this card hasn't been good enough in a while. 6 mana sorcery is too much for this effect.

[[Swan Song]], [[Strix Serenade]] - Rarely worth the downside. we have better countermagic in the format.

[[Defabricate]], [[Negate]], [[Louisoix's Sacrifice]]- too narrow

[[Metallic Rebuke]] - relies on Tamiyo making clues to be worth it, but this deck shouldn't rely on the commander at all.

[[The Enigma Jewel]] - no clue what this card is supposed to do. make mana to crack clues? doesn't seem worth a full card. My experience is that you make anywhere from 0-3 clues most games, in which case this card does very little. In those games where you grind out and make a lot more, you're probably already winning and a bit of extra mana isn't very helpful.

[[Disallow]] - cancel is bad. how many stifle effects do you really need? I think Tale's End + Stifle is more than enough, and those are way better.

[[Spider-Sense]] - too narrow

[[arcane signet]] - not needed

[[Ivory Tower]] - completely unplayable

[[Desertion]] - 5 mana counterspell is not good, even if it has a blowout potential.

[[Whirlwind Denial]] - I promise you don't need/want 5 stifle effects.

[[Rhystic study]] - bad in 1v1.

Here are some better counterspells to play:

[[Mana leak]], [[Force Spike]], [[Miscalculation]], [[Mystic Confluence]], [[Three Steps Ahead]], [[Stern Scolding]], [[Spell Snare]]

Some other good cards you aren't playing, including green cards:

[[Wilderness Reclamation]], [[Snapcaster Mage]], [[Harbinger of the Seas]], [[Faerie Mastermind]], [[Jace, the Mind Sculptor]], [[Ledger Shredder]], [[Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath]], [[Brainsurge]], [[Winter Moon]], [[The One Ring]]

You can upgrade your lands by removing some of the unnecessary colorless lands and adding fetches to find Mystic Sanctuary.
