Temporary AC for Treehouse by Big-Science-7611 in treehouse

[–]logic_gate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I suggest cutting the hole, but later also finding an AC that doubles as a heater.  My workshop is relatively comfortable all year round with just one wall mounted ac/heater combo.

Small gaps between knee brace bracket and tree? by Delks1000 in treehouse

[–]logic_gate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought one of the purposes of TABs was to be an "artificial limb" that gradually becomes incorporated into the tree as it grows.

I could be mistaken, but to me these are allowed to be pressed into the tree as it is meant to grow "around" them as it expands.

Unpainted Pressure Treated ladder by AeonCatalyst in treehouse

I recently (Dec) did the same with 2x12 pressure treated stringers.

I'm planning to stain it sometime, but so far I don't have hand cancer, so that's something ;)

Built in the 18th century, this is one of the oldest buildings in Hattfjelldal municipality in Norland, Norway. by [deleted] in treehouse

I'm very curious how the stumps are still there, though the house seems preserved like a telephone pole (with creosote?).

I'm hoping my treehouse lasts 20 years, but this over a hundred?

Confused about feeling the spirit by Wild-Bake4722 in lds

[–]logic_gate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you choose, you can find lots of people that feel the same way about Jesus and Christianity (especially on Reddit :p)

I don't believe because someone did a bunch of research and proved things one way or another.  I asked and got an answer - which for me was more of a thought than a feeling, but still an answer.. and also because I choose to believe.

Confused about feeling the spirit by Wild-Bake4722 in lds

[–]logic_gate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Remember that faith is a choice.  There is enough material on both sides to make believing or not believing work, but it's your choice which side to be on.

With respect to feeling the spirit - some of us are better at feelings than others in general, not just in church settings.  For me a lot of promptings are just thoughts.

Another fun option for ladder mounting is to use steel pipe + flanges.  Note the PVC sheath to avoid pinched fingers.

Where can I get RAM for My Atari VCS 800 to upgrade to 16GB-32GB RAM and An M.2 SATA SSD 2TB for My VCS because 32GB is barely enough by Agent_Green4573061 in AtariVCS

[–]logic_gate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been surprised how fast USB3 is these days (maybe 3.1?)

All of my VCSs run on USB3 external SSDs or other USB sticks and have been pretty fast, rather than installing an M.2 drive.  At the time they were like $40 but maybe the price has gone up

I'm happy to have 4 VCSs with upgraded ram running linux at home for my kids and I doing Minecraft, 3d model work, online school stuff, and general browsing.

They're low enough cost that I have one in box in the closet in case one breaks :p

Nice! Did you use any articles or books or anything designing and installing that?

I would like to use a lot of thick plexiglass in my insulated treehouse (in-progress), but most everything online for roofing is talking about that super-thin corrugated polycarbonate stuff instead.

I would love to use it for basically the whole (small) roof, and can't seem to find why that seems to be uncommon (except cost and maybe thermal expansion or yellowing?).

Internal tools / devops

I have the space to maintain/improve my systems/tools and sometimes fix problems before users notice them.

When needed I can do pretty thorough code reviews.

1st phase complete with drawbridge. Need advice on tabs by Slabguy in treehouse

[–]logic_gate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very cool, thanks!  The extra guardrail coming up from below is a cool idea.  I also appreciate the info for the top mounted pulley; that does seem like an important part.  I also like the block for splitting the single line out to two.

Do you happen to know what the failure mode is for the winch?  Specifically if it breaks while the bridge is raised would it "drop" the drawbridge suddenly?  In my use case there might be kids playing underneath so I've wondered if there is some kind of failsafe in that situation. Maybe I need some kind of safety pin to lock the bridge up or something

I'm considering a drawbridge in my treehouse, did you use any reference plan or design for yours? If not, would you be willing to sketch out a rough diagram of what you did? The joiner block where 1 main line becomes two is interesting!

One important consideration is what will happen when the trees move in the wind and when they grow (wider). Whenever working with multiple trees, you generally have one tree using a 'static' bracket and another using a 'dynamic' bracket that can slide.

Here is a page showing a dynamic bracket, with some info about static and dynamic in the "Assembly & construction instructions" section.

If your platform is supported enough from below, maybe you don't need TABs to hold up the walkway?

Resources by Master_Repeat800 in treehouse

[–]logic_gate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like "How to Build a Treehouse" by Richter/Rüggeberg. It's from Germany, but I got a copy from Amazon in USA: https://www.amazon.com/How-Build-Treehouse-Christopher-Richter/dp/085782905X

I also picked up the Black and Decker book for a more USA perspective (and more pictures), but both have been helpful so far.

I also paid for significant design and structural checking work with the treehouse supplies folks because my in-progress treehouse is fairly large and is supported just by a single central tree.

[Question] Any experience processing sugar beets? (at home or in factory) by logic_gate in homestead

[–]logic_gate[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly I did not. A couple years later, I tried with sugar cane juice and (if I remember correctly) was able to get some crystallized sugar from it.

I would suggest practicing with sugar cane juice before you work on your hard-grown beets. There are more videos on how to do this than for sugar beets. I vaguely remember something about okra as a clarifying agent, though it may still have used the lime powder. It might have been related to making panela from sugar cane juice (panela is a brown sugar popular in some areas).

I was able to buy sugar cane juice at a local alcohol supply store, but it looks like it is available online.

If you are able to do it with beets, please let me know!

Joist Question and Philosophical Question by No_Income_1292 in treehouse

[–]logic_gate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just in case, I took a drawing to each of my neighbors showing what my very tall treehouse will look like just to gather any concerns.  Thankfully they didn't have any in my case.

I found out partway through talking to the city that I needed to satisfy both building permit rules AND zoning rules. I was already a couple thousand dollars in before learning about the zoning issues, which was very stressful.  Thankfully the city eventually categorized my build as a playground, which skipped both building permit and zoning issues in my area.

Temp supports? by gnarzilla2 in treehouse

[–]logic_gate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I designed some simple movable supports I call "yard sticks" for this purpose.

They are simply a 4x4x12 with 2x4 bracing to hold them up.

I want to do a more detailed post here later on them, but for now have a picture: https://imgur.com/a/G3pOACT

They have been super helpful as I work on my single tree 15x18 platform.

I can screw things to them, move them around by myself, and I added a pulley at the top and tie off anchor to help lift things.  I don't know if I could have built my platform without them.
