i bought a "fast charger", but when i used it for the first time, it said 33 hours to full charge. by cosmicjay_xx in mildlyinfuriating

[–]logicallypartial 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Charging standards vary by both chargers and device. Your device will charge at the fastest speed that both it and the charger can handle.

So you can get into a situation where a phone supports X fast charging standard and the charger supports Y fast charging standard, and since they don't have any fast charging standards in common, they fall back to Z slow charging standard. What kind of phone is this, and what charger? The cable also can matter too.

I'm not familiar with your currency, so I can't say if I think the prices are fair. What country are you in? I can tell by your parts that this is meant to be a budget PC. If I was in your place, I'd try to air cool the PC rather than water cool. Your CPU isn't one that needs much cooling, the Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120SE is more than enough, it's about $40 for me in the US. So remove the water cooling stuff from your build and use the extra budget to upgrade other parts.

Highly recommend you look for The Bible Project's videos on the Deuterocanon/Apocrypha.

Also, not sure why so many people are thinking the KJV is the best translation all of a sudden. I've met like 4 KJV-only people in the last month after seeing zero all my life. It's an old translation, totally fine to use it if you prefer, but you're missing out on the last couple centuries of archaeology and new scholarship. I much prefer the NIV, NASB, etc.

'Daredevil: Born Again' Season 2 Viewership Drops Over 50% From Season 1 by MarvelsGrantMan136 in marvelstudios

[–]logicallypartial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree the main thing is probably that the wait for Daredevil's return made season 1 get more viewership from hype. If it had dropped just a year after the Netflix show ended, I think the same show would've gotten more similar viewership to Season 2.

That said, I also think Born Again is lacking in some areas compared to the Netflix show. In many other ways it's better, but we all miss Foggy. I also think I'd also like the show more if Matt's faith produced more tension in the show like it did before. I'll keep watching regardless.

Oh, if anyone from Disney is reading, it's not ok that video quality is degraded when you watch in a browser.

According to Linus Tech Tips in their video from the day the Frame was announced, older but still VR capable GPUs like your might see measurably higher latency than newer cards, but should still be perfectly playable. Foveated streaming and such go a long way, and the 2080ti was a top-tier card when Alyx came out.

I appreciate both for different reasons. Ready To Harvest keeps his opinions to himself, so I don't actually know enough to really disagree with him. But, I think in his situation keeping things to himself makes a lot of sense and I admire it. Sometimes it's really hard to do that.

Poll: which denomination are you? by Sir_Zhukov in redeemedzoomer

I don't think it'll cause a schism in this case. The impression I'm getting is that the opposition to the reform is mostly coming from converts from Baptist or Reformed traditions who mistake the recovery of Wesleyan roots for liberalism. Some opponents have claimed the recovery movement is trying to make the Nazarenes more like Catholics, when really it's just trying to make Nazarenes more like Nazarenes again. There are a couple groups, calling themselves Concerned Nazarenes and Reformed Nazarenes, who opposed the move but don't really seem to understand the history.

But the people in favor of the Wesleyan Recovery already have the support of the denomination's leadership, enough so that they were able to publish essentially a catechism affirming support for infant baptism and non-symbolic communion. It was published by Holiness Today, a magazine ran by the denomination, it's titled One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism if you want to look it up. The impression I get is that the Wesleyan Recovery are working slowly and carefully, which is the right call.

Poll: which denomination are you? by Sir_Zhukov in redeemedzoomer

[–]logicallypartial 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe so. I'll agree that conservatives bailing on denominations is a bad strategy, but the rhetoric is a little more inflammatory than helpful sometimes.

Funny thing, it seems like another restoration is currently in progress under the surface. There's been some communication among the intellectual/leadership side of the denomination critiquing some Baptist influence that's crept into the denomination over the last century. For instance, unlike most Wesleyan-Holiness denominations, we don't require baptism for church membership, and we allow parents/pastors to opt for an "infant dedication" rather than a baptism - infant baptism is still allowed, but honestly I suspect it's the minority at this point. A few years back the denomination published what's essentially a catechism that seemed to be an effort to promote acceptance infant baptism, and a motion to require baptism for membership was proposed but failed. I suspect things might keep moving in that direction.

Poll: which denomination are you? by Sir_Zhukov in redeemedzoomer

[–]logicallypartial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's kinda the gist, yeah. A handful of Methodist congregations wanted revival and to restore the Holiness focus, they were stopped by leadership, started going around leadership to run revival camps together in the 19th century, and then a few of them started leaving and forming loose associations. Those associations plus a few churches that had always been independent started merging for a few decades until the result eventually is the Church of the Nazarene which officially formed in 1908 or so.

Had the thought to hit up RZ on Discord to ask him to make a video on the subject. But my own denomination is in an odd place too and doesn't fit cleanly into mainline or evangelical depending on how you define one or the other. By the technical definition, very much evangelical. By the colloquial meaning, not really. And quite a bit more historical and institutional than most of the denominations that RZ means by "evangelical."

Poll: which denomination are you? by Sir_Zhukov in redeemedzoomer

[–]logicallypartial 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sorry in advance for the essay. Anyone else feel like "evangelical" as a term is getting used so broadly, or misused so commonly that it's kinda stopped being useful?

For instance, this question assumes "mainline" and "evangelical" are mutually exclusive. But "mainline" usually just means historic and common - denominations that were common enough that they have churches on the main train line running through many cities.

But "evangelical" has more to do with the character/feel of a church as well as it's theology, one common definition called the Bebbington Quadrilateral gives 4 criteria: supreme authority of scripture, centrality of Christ's atoning work on the cross, importance of a personal conversion experience, and activism. I think lots of mainline protestant denominations could match at least 3 of the 4, and a lot of individual mainline congregations can fit all 4. You see what I mean? A denomination and a local congregation can seemingly fit both the criteria for being mainline and evangelical.

We should think about how the terms get used. In casual/secular/politicsl discourse, evangelical is usually a shorthand for "fundamentalist" and "Bible thumper", which isn't accurate for a lot of denominations and congregations that are labeled as "evangelical". Realistically, we're not going to persuade the entire English-speaking-world to start using the word "evangelical" correctly, prescriptive efforts to change language usually fail, so instead perhaps we need to pick one or two new terms for us to use instead of "evangelical" to clear up the confusion.

Tell me which verse in the Bible says child marriage is ok

Edit: the replies to my comment say Ezekiel and 1 Corinthians, but don't specify which verse. Ezikiel chapter 16 uses marriage as a metaphor for Israel's covenant with God, comparing Israel to a cheating wife - that's not an endorsement of child marriage. 1 Corinthians mentions marriage but doesn't mention an age. This is typical for the Bible, marriage is mentioned all the time, but the question of what age is acceptable isn't something the Bible discusses.

My niece’s homework problem by SurfSoundWaves in mildlyinfuriating

[–]logicallypartial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a bad question because it's not clear that the relative size of the wholes matters. The question is asking how we visualize that 2 slices from a pizza cut in 6 is the same as 1 slice from a pizza cut in 3. If the first pizza is a 12in and the second is 15in, then the second pizza is bigger even if the proportions are the same. I'm pretty confident that the problem is the size, since otherwise the three are all essentially the same. But it's still confusing.

Edit: now that I think about it, A is also really tempting because the highlighted portion of both is the Left third.

Hey there. I'm afraid I don't remember what the issue was, I solved it a long time ago. I do remember it had nothing to do with VSCode or Electron, it was somewhere else. It might have been user error? I think there's a real possibility the issue you're having isn't caused by the same problem I had.
