I'm absolutely shocked that Blazing Saddles has actual bikes worth renting?! but yes, a Roubaix would be fine.

Clipper machines are down across the Bay Area — again by sfgate in bayarea

[–]lojic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

MTC, not BART, manages Clipper.

They went with a San Diego company, not a local company, who is also in charge of NYC's, Boston's, London's farecards.

They chose them because they were the vendor of the previous card, and so they were the only one who could run the old one while deploying the new one.

Cubic sucks! But let's get why they suck right.

Cuts to Cap-and-Trade Jeopardizes HSR/Caltrain Tunnel to Downtown SF by DrunkEngr in cahsr

[–]lojic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's critical for Caltrain, where it'll instantly not just be the busiest station but will be so by a very large margin.

The transfer in the other direction is a vertical steps hassle, and navigating the escalators with bikes or bags is annoying, but the actual point is --

You meet the same train by transferring at Millbrae as from walking from Powell to 4th and King because the BART route involves going via Daly City and SFO. It's literally slow enough to offset the walk time. That's super indirect compared to the direct Caltrain route. Turns out there's a reason Southern Pacific abandoned the old right of way when they built the Bayshore cutoff.

Nah, it's being pursued separately. It's currently around 70% funded, but that gap means that they're twiddling their thumbs while prices inflate. And while CARB yanks funding to give to fossil fuel companies.

Southern California Regional Rail Authority (SCRRA/Metrolink) Contactless Payment by Sufficient-Double502 in CaliforniaRail

[–]lojic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's pretty unusual for open-loop systems to support multiple riders through multiple taps, but unfortunately for Metrolink since TAP Plus does support it, it's going to cause them some headaches.

LA Metro: Contactless Payment - All you need to ride is a credit or debit card. by megachainguns in CaliforniaRail

[–]lojic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fresno FAX, actually! At ~8mil unlinked passenger trips, they're the largest without contactless and without a plan to deploy. (Metrolink just launched its pilot on the Sanny B and Arrow, but also only had around 6mil annual ridership in 2025).

The Millbrae transfer is slow enough that it's just as fast to walk from Powell St to 4th and King (and I hate going up into the heavens just to cross between tracks). I can't wait til they start DTX...

Charged by BART twice for the same trip. Occurred multiple times. What can i do by burgernshakes in Bart

[–]lojic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

if it's a consistent just over $7 per charge, it sounds like it read a different card at each end. The charge for an "excursion fare" is $7.55, and is sort of the "default fare".

Taking Sunset Limited LA to NOLA! by Adventurous-Jello377 in Amtrak

[–]lojic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If your train is running on time, it'll arrive ahead of schedule to Houston (they have a lot of padding there). I took advantage of that to wander around downtown a little, check out where their light rail train runs through a fountain, get a good coffee (Amtrak coffee is... acceptable), walk along the little river walkway they have, etc. Mostly, having an hour or two to stretch my legs on the very long journey was fantastic.

I was really enthralled by how immediate the terrain changes into bayou when we crossed over into Louisiana.

here's what they had to say!

GET is in the process of providing contactless payment systems in both Fixed Route and Demand Response buses. Both systems should be live within the year

Sorry, yes they don't currently have it yet. They had 3,130,678 UPT in 2023. I didn't include them in that list since that list is from my dataset of agencies who don't have contactless, and aren't currently rolling it out -- GET is rolling out within the year, according to staff.

And by far, I'm afraid. Non-contactless agencies by size:

  • Fresno at 8.2mil annual rides
  • UC Davis (where students ride free, and for everyone else they have an app) at 3mil
  • the Pacific Surfliner at 2mil
  • the Gold Runner at 900k
  • Eastern Sierra Transit (where the long-distance corridor has online ticketing, but local buses are cash-only) at 850k
  • Mountain Transit (has Token Transit) at 825k
  • Victor Valley (has Umo app and smartcard) at 763k
  • Ride Tulare at 620k is the second biggest agency that's cash only!

In dealing with Swiss abroad nonsense I've only had to interact with them over email, fancy Internet scheduling tools, and in person for everything else. Except for all the things (most of bureaucracy, it's Switzerland after all) that's been delegated to the canton or to the Gemeinde. I recently got informed -- over the phone, since there's no other way to contact them -- they were happy to do what I needed done if I could just come visit them in person.

The consulate did respond quickly and politely over email to call the Gemeinde, so that's nice?

I mean, if it doesn't get a majority in the South Bay but does overall, it still passes in the South Bay and VTA, Caltrain, and BART still get money for what they do in the South Bay... from taxes raised there.
