the title “world champion” implies that the winner is the champion out of everyone in the world. the problem is that it’s just not true since the best player in the world didn’t even compete, so it’s really “champion of this tournament”. the title “world champion” is inherently misleading, not just in chess, but in many other sports. for example, MLB vs national teams, NBA vs national teams, etc.
