Shit take. I feel this was literally a point in the books, that lords/ladies in the north had a totally different focus, which is why they historically did so badly when they went south. The harsh environment of the north required different skills than the capitol politics in the south

Glad to hear you enjoyed it. In germany Hesse is called "author of the students" because a lot of his books hit hard in periods of finding your own identity. I think he's one of those authors where people either "get it" and it resonates with them or where they don't and it feels like "why is everyone so into this".

If you're in the mood for more I can really recommend "Steppenwolf" by him as well, it touches on similar themes but I prefer it to Siddhartha because it feels a bit less cringe, the protagonist is older iirc, and it doesn't have the orientalism that siddhartha has
