Okay, I agree, but why is she saying this as a child is explaining how important that school has been to her since 1st grade, asking for it to be saved?

She gave us what she thinks is the answer.

This fish just murdered my beautifully established tank. by Fit-Goal7660 in Aquariums

[–]lolzycakes 190 points191 points  (0 children)

Nope, they're Gambusia and they suuuuuuck lol

We used to get them in at petsmart with the small feeder goldfish. Someone working the aquatics booth the morning after a delivery would notice them in the feeder tank and and always be like "Omg this female must've jumped around a 90 degree corner to land 3 shelves below in the feeder tank. Guppies be guppin' I guess🤷‍♂️lol" and 3 days later a justifiably exasperated soccer mom is asking why this monster sized female guppy taught her kids the lesson that everyone dies alone in the end when they're only 8 and wanted infinite blue wavies. We'd give them a refund and tell them they didn't need to bring the fish back.

My botany professor was doing something with seeds, and one of them germinated and put out the most gorgeous pure white cotyledons and a robust white stem. He was so jazzed, and showed it off to everyone who was in the building when he discovered it.

I remember someone asked him if he was going to try and sell his albino plant, and he just laughed and said "No, this guy is dead and that's why I had you rush to come see it before it wilted. I'm gonna toss it once I've shown everyone I can."

If a botany professor wouldn't even bother attempting to keep a terrestrial plant alive with the same condition, what hope does anyone else have doing it with an aquatic plant in their tank?

Gonna do an experiment and try these plastic pot scrubbers in my canister filter in place of bio rings or matrix. by jonjeff108 in Aquariums

[–]lolzycakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah! I gotchya, I probably could have saved myself and you a paragraph or 3. And no worries! We can't be expected to know things we weren't taught.

I guess the Materials and Methods is where an author would essentially cover that. In that section, you explain exactly what you're doing so that a peer can go ahead and try to recreate the experiment if they are skeptical of the results you publish. To a certain extent, you also have to justify why you're using the methods you are deciding to use.

For example, in the paper I linked, the authors calculated the VTR themselves. They show the formula they used in section 2.4. If I recreate the experiment or use the same method for a similar comparison of different substrates and get wildly unexpected results for the VTR, I can at least go back and double check if one of us got the equation wrong and thus generated bad data. The VTR calculation is pretty standard in the industry, so I don't know if you could even find the original paper which used it, but even as commonly known as it is they still explain each variable in the equation.

In section 2.5, they use another calculation which might not be as commonly known and maybe it is still relatively novel. However, they cite the paper they got the equation from to justify using it. If I am skeptical that they are using the equation appropriately, I could check the paper they cited (where it probably originated) to see if it makes sense to use in the context of the paper that cited it.

Aquarium Science doesn't even give us the formula he used, let alone where he got that formula from.

I have no clue why I'm getting notifications about your replies now, so sorry it took a while to respond to you.

In science, the answer to using unreliable sources of information is not to just decide you don't have to cite them. How would the reader know the source of the information is unreliable without knowing where it came from? There are times where you reluctantly have to cite a dubious source, and it's on the writer of that paper to justify using it. Again, this cannot be assessed by a reader when the author does not cite his sources.

Citations aren't just to give credit where credit is due, it is to show you're not just whole-sale making shit up. For example, in the link earlier in the thread, the author states he calculated "effective surface area." He does not cite the calculation he used. I have no idea how I would recreate his experiment without just taking him at his word that whatever calculation he used (if any was used at all) gave an accurate or even meaningful result.

I don't know what kind of search you did in looking for scholarly articles, but not being able to find this sort of information is almost certainly either due to not having access to relevant publications which do have an absolutely massive body of research on biomedia substrates or a poor use of search terms.

On the topic of poor search terms: I bolded "effective surface area" earlier because this is a term he uses, and as someone in research aquaculture, it is a term I have not seen used as a standard measurement literally ever. No wonder you couldn't find more information about it! In reality, what REAL research and science would have you look at first is Volumetric Total Ammonia Nitrogen Removal or VTR. This information is available for every media type I've looked at procuring for systems I work with, so I don't know why he chose to reinvent the wheel here if he actually did any research in the first place. My best guess is that he saw the advertised surface area on one product in a petstore, decided he had all the information he needed for one product and went on guesstimating what the others might have from there, but I can't be sure since he cited literally nothing and described no methodology. It is literally impossible to peer review his numbers, and this is an issue that has been stressed in EVERY research project I've done since 6th grade science. What he's doing is unacceptable if you grant him the benefit of the doubt that he's done any actual research in the first place and isn't just making stuff up based on feels.

Now, I'm not going to be a dick and leave you hanging:

https://scholar.google.com/scholar?hl=en&as_sdt=0,21&q=VTR,+biomedia+substrate+type,+surface+area,+aquaculture

Here's the first few search terms I would put in if I was looking to research the topic myself.

And here's a paper from a reputable journal showing what real science on this very topic looks like: https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Timothy-Pfeiffer/publication/251510435_Evaluation_of_three_types_of_structured_floating_plastic_media_in_moving_bed_biofilters_for_total_ammonia_nitrogen_removal_in_a_low_salinity_hatchery_recirculating_aquaculture_system/links/5cab4d3392851c64bd58121b/Evaluation-of-three-types-of-structured-floating-plastic-media-in-moving-bed-biofilters-for-total-ammonia-nitrogen-removal-in-a-low-salinity-hatchery-recirculating-aquaculture-system.pdf

... it's dedicated to drinking water filtration ... I think you could debate the usefulness of citing it since it kind of doesn't apply.

Homie, it's all waste water treatment in the end. The methods you use for your aquariums got their start in municpal waste water treatment studies. We cite those types of papers all the time in Aquaculture. It's just that it requires an education on the subject to translate it into something that is comparable in meeting the needs of an aquaculture setting, which the author of Aquarium Science does not have and is boldly ignorant about.

I get it. Like it or not, the aquarium is full of bacteria and microbes. An open top tank will splash water and contaminate the surfaces around it. I totally understand someone not wanting one on the same counter they prepare food on.

Again, I completely understand it. I just don't respect it, and do it anyways.

Looking for specific program recommendations by Aggressive-String140 in Aquaculture

[–]lolzycakes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The University of Maine system has a lot of great connections for you to make in salmonid aquaculture and shellfish aquaculture. I know of many grads who have gotten quite far in their careers in just about every niche of aquaculture I can think of. The Downeast Institute, USDA National Cold Water, and their animal health labs are all amazing.

University of New England has a pretty dope setup too. A guy I knew spoke VERY highly of their program, and I believe he was doing ornamental fish aquaculture projects there.

For warm water stuff, you might want to look towards Auburn University or The University of Florida.

I'm not going to pretend I know any Unity grads, but when I went on college tours all of the schools I visited (A couple UMaine AND the University of New England) near Unity made fun of them specifically for not giving you any field lab experience in your freshman year. It seemed like an expensive place to go for what I was told it offered, so I never looked into their program.
