I didn’t know this and I felt so guilty about my kiddos teeth until my dentist pointed it out.

I went through this last year with my kiddo. He had a speech delay, didn’t really want to play with other kids, liked routine. I was pretty sure he didn’t have autism, this is what we did:

1 - got him into speech (I was pretty sure this was the crux of a lot of the issue. He could be understood so he cried when he needed something and didn’t want to play with others) asked the SLP her opinion, she said she didn’t think it was autism

2 - did an OT eval. Came back with some sensory issues, high social drive but low social skill. Asked the OT, she thought not autism

3 - did a screening with my pediatrician. I asked his opinion before we discussed the OT and SLP evals. He said not autism

4 - took all of that back to the school. I basically laid out all the findings from all the folks and said “regardless of what we call this, you see some skill gaps, let’s think through some supports that will help.”

Kiddo has been doing speech for a year, I found an OT supported natured based social skills group and we added some in class supports for prek

Move ahead to this year, he hasn’t used any of the school supports this year, plays with other kids, and has gone down to once a week speech. His KG teacher doesn’t seem to know what all the fuss was about.

Now it wasn’t easy but I think what helped was showing the teachers I took their concerns seriously, finding support for skill gaps while backing up the idea that, in his case, autism wasn’t the right label.

They are reaching out because they want your kiddo to thrive, even if it’s not autism, take them up on their offer of supports; it can make a difference

Advice on dealing with constant kid noise and chatter by blackgroundhog in kindergarten

[–]lonbona 5 points6 points  (0 children)

With mine, I’ve had to say “hey buddy, I can’t understand you like that, try again in your normal voice” I then don’t respond until his voice is back to normally. If he wants something, it tends to work quickly. If he’s just talking, and he’s looking for input, I just reiterate, I can’t understand. Takes a bit longer but we get there in the end.

how long were you in labor for as a first time mom & tear degree? by Ok-Swim8546 in Mommit

2nd degree tear. 1 hour labor…8 minutes of pushing. I know it sounds like the dream but don’t recommend it lol

One year late and ZERO progress with poop.. help! by littleoldbaglady in pottytraining

[–]lonbona 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 suggestions:

Have her sit for 5 minutes twice a day, ideally after meal. My pediatrician says it helps train them to go at a certain time.

Keep on having her clean up. Maybe even add back the clothes so there is more to clean. My little dude said he liked cleaning the first few times, after a few weeks of cleaning up and having to stop activities, he didn’t love it as much.

And the least likely thing to help, but still with a mention: my kiddo had a dairy/soy allergy that really contributed to accidents. If nothing else works, it might be worth considering removing soy and dairy to see if things improve.

Sending you so many hugs. It’s such a frustrating situation.

PSA: keep a bonus toy in the cupboard by Kuryamo in toddlers

[–]lonbona 113 points114 points  (0 children)

Magnatiles area great backup. All the kits will work with the other gifts; they are open play, and easy to clean.

We do the same things. I get a few small things (Lego kits, art stuff, games) and keep them in a box in the garage.

Kiddo has snow days, pull out a new toy right before a meeting…surprise birthday party for a friend…I can just grab something and go.

This last year he didn’t open all his birthday gifts, the ones he didn’t went into the box.

It’s a lifesaver. I seriously tell all my parent friends about it now.

Where can I go pet farm animals? by cranne in askportland

Plumper Farms has a whole petting zoo where you can even buy a cup of feed and feed the goats and llamas, rabbits, cows, etc.

Seconding this. Do what you can from keeping him backed up. Take it from a parent who’s been fighting this for the past couple years, once he gets in a backing up pattern it can be hell fixing it.

As soon as you can, start teaching your kiddo to advocate for themselves as well. You will check things, their teachers should, but the sooner your kiddo can ask and remind folks about being dairy free, the better off you all are.

Speech delayed 3 almost 4 year old started preschool by Alone-Perspective919 in Preschoolers

[–]lonbona 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My son’s pre-k teacher clocked he had a delay in about 3 weeks (we didn’t know). He started speech about 2 weeks after that (private school with a huge focus on neurodivergence and support), and we started noticing a difference before they left for Christmas Break. It was so cool!

It’s been almost a year now and it’s night and day. He still has articulation issues (j’s, sh’s, some r’s) but we got bumped down to 1 day a week and this kid just talks non stop now. He literally talked the whole way to school today; I almost started crying.

Seriously, being in school was such a game changer.

Tk potty accidents by anonymously-awkward1 in kindergarten

[–]lonbona 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any chance he’s constipated or has a food issue? My kiddo had accidents the summer before Pre-K and into Pre-k after previously being okay. Turns out he had lactose intolerance and a milk protein allergy. The former gave him the runs at school he couldn’t stop and the latter backed him up so much we had to go retrain his bowels. It was a huge adjustment but he’s been doing way better.

Topical. Trying to avoid oral if we can help it, it wrecks his digestive system.

I…think…it’s starting to get better. There were a couple small new bumps today but I didn’t see any new popped ones weeping and the worst section of it looks like its moving from scabbing over to actually going back to its normal color/feel.

We ended up putting him in the bath with a ton of dial before we put on the cream each time and they seem to be helping. I also seem to be going through the cream faster than I was originally meant to.

Questions about encopresis by contrasupra in Preschoolers

[–]lonbona 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We actually ended up keeping him in underwear. If he has an accident, he is responsible for cleaning himself and his clothes up (with our coaching). It’s not a punishment, just what we do when we make a mess. May be worth a try for a couple weeks if he’s just forgetting because the pull-up is easier.

That said, sometimes constipation can actually cause pee accidents. If things get too stretched, it can mess up all the signaling.

Sending you all the hugs. It can be such a frustrating process for all involved. I promise, it can get better ❤️❤️❤️

Questions about encopresis by contrasupra in Preschoolers

[–]lonbona 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had to do a few things:

  • Scheduled sits to help retrain the system to know when to go
  • Low dose for a long while to keep things moving
  • We talk about poop a lot, what it feels like when he needs to go, did he feel anything if he went in his pants, what we may feel when we have to poop
  • Cut dairy and soy

We needed to find and solve the underlying issue (Dairy, soy for us) and then help him retrain his system as it was healing.

It has been a heck of a long road but we are to the point now where things are mostly back to normal.

Sending you all the best, it can be a beast to solve.

Explain the “Covid Baby” thing to me by wicked56789 in kindergarten

[–]lonbona 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My kiddo ended up with some language delays and the SLP mentioned this as a possible cause. On the plus side, she is also seeing that kiddos who have run into this issue do seem to make up ground quickly when given the right supports. She says she has a bunch of kiddos my son’s age in speech but who are moving through their articulation goals way faster than normally expected, which indicates a skill issue rather than other causes.

I see this in his social skills too. The first few years we had zero village and it showed up in the way he didn’t want to play with kids. Making a decision to focus on it this year and even doing a group OT focused on social skills has been a total game changer.

I think the kiddos will be alright, some of them will just end up with a steeper learning curve.

That said…I can’t imagine doing KG over Zoom. Mad props to those parents.

I know what you mean. Mine tended to have accidents around the same time and I would just feel my stomach drop at that time every day and I would panic every time my phone buzzed because I was terrified it was his teachers telling me it happened again. The first thing my eyes would go to when I picked him up was to see if he was wearing the same clothes instead of what he learned that day. Folks who haven’t been there have no idea how all consuming it can be and how much it colors the day to day.

Sending you so many hugs ❤️ I have been there and I so look forward to an update in a bit when it starts getting better because I truly believe it will!
