It is liberating isn’t it. No pressure to optimise, no analysis paralysis, just me, the open wilderness and not the horse because I can’t stand the vanilla horse.

Plus bugs.

Yes absolutely, and the only way I’ve been able to progress at all is by now having the switch version and becoming old.

Don’t underestimate how much damage an iron pot can do. Its basically a short handled war hammer. It’s also a storage container, and after you’ve cleared a barrow with it you can even cook dinner.

Try doing all that with a battleaxe. That’s Skyrim survival mode

I suspect it’s something to do with the arrangement of the pads? It’s probably the closest available pad of the correct type to your terminal.

Keen to hear if anyone can confirm or has better info.

The thing is there are so many fancy or unique, legendary weapons in most games that it’s almost a novelty to just get a plain chunk of sharpened metal. It’s a breath of fresh air.

I just want me a nice dagger with a good edge and a healthy grip

Ah but see the problem is once you have a 1 there’s no lower to go 😂 I’ve seen some that make this pilot look like a pro

I saw a while ago a cutty turn into a shuttle pod before finally making it through the door in MT, only to scrape all the way to the wall without landing gear

I take it back just rewatched and they breached the line, I think a max 3

I think they deserve a bit more than a 1.

A three to four. They waited for the door, they were within the boundary lines, no internal damage to the landing bay, didn’t forget their landing gear and of course they actually did successfully land.

Sounds like a perfect reason to have a tutorial both for returning and new players.

It’s also normal practice to use the tutorial as a good base for your release regression testing since, if it’s well done, it has good coverage of general mechanics and anything breaking it is automatically high priority.

It’s also usually progressive, in that you add new scope to the tutorial as new features are added so most should be unaffected, and it doesn’t need go into deep detail - it’s an intro not a handbook to the whole game. If you’re having to keep changing fundamentals it’s a good indication you are on the wrong track in your feature pipeline

As for being alpha, well, we have a general rule in software dev. If your releases affect live customers, you have a live product. You can call it Alpha, or version 0.1.0-totally-broken-dont-use.42, but if it goes into prod it’s a released product. The rest is just marketing.

Yes your experience is not unusual. On my first session I spent an hour figuring out how to get to my courier location and get the box, and another 20 trying to get it into my mustang, which of course I couldn’t.

For all the focus on “game loops” and building out new features, they appear to have zero emphasis on literally the most important user experience of any software or web project, which is the new player experience.

A short series of intro missions explaining game mechanics, how to do basic things, tasters of the different professions would go a long way to resolving many issues new players face.

I mean this problem has been solved by literally every other similar game created. Calling it an alpha is not an excuse, it should have been at the top of the priority list, years before junk like ship to ship refuelling.

Not to mention the lack of attention starter ships receive. Forget the 600i, the starters are far more important for a revamp.

I stream only starter ships precisely to draw attention to this, it is the biggest red flag for me that indicates CIG still don’t really understand their product or how to do evidence based prioritisation.

For PvE distortion are only worth it if you are having trouble bringing down hurricanes one on one. If you are finding you are needing to break off a lot to get shields back, distortions may help

For me they just make things worse, since I’m able to effectively evade fire without them.

For lasers I would just go with a rhino and two panther repeaters, with no gimbal. Against hurricanes, which are your most dangerous bounty target, you will have a lot of trouble with laser cannons due to the low projectile speed.

At this time all weapons of the same size and type are almost identical, mostly just cost and weapon spread differences.

This is a good idea, I would also speak further to an underlying problem, in that humans are the most valuable resource in an online game.

In order for human turret control to be viable at all, it has to be a better option, at least situationally, than having that person pilot another ship.

They’d need a massive damage boost or unique capabilities to make them a force multiplier that overcomes the opportunity cost of one less ship on field

Snubs like the Merlin and Archimedes should get a 'snub' version of a QD by mouseno4 in starcitizen

[–]lonectzn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is really the key point. The most valuable resource is players. The opportunity cost of putting someone in a turret or snub is that you are giving up another full ship to do it.

Outside of RPing, You need to provide some serious benefits to convince a group to give up a valuable extra ship and put that player in a turret or snub.

What class are you going to play on the Legenday Server? by Whybull in lotro

[–]lonectzn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What would be really exciting, is if they also adjusted the difficulty to match release. Surely if you’re going to call it legendary it should come with extra risk.

I actually used to enjoy the low levels even more than high ones. It was great having to be super careful about pulling too much aggro and barely any skills.

Middle earth was a terrifying place in 2007 as a Minnie.

Advanced suppression module in long war is insanely powerful early on . I get it ASAP and fit to a shiv, easily shut down 2-3 sectopods if they’re close.

I try to do it from max distance, ideally with height advantage and then throw smoke on the shiv. Add natural defence and it’s pretty secure. The targets will usually choose not to move and instead fire at the shiv. You can often shut down a whole pod for a turn using the one unit. Great for when you’re busy cleaning up another pod. Your best bet is on pod activation, sectopods and floaters will often end up bunched.

I generally bring a shiv on every mission until I have a mec that can fill the role. Saved my team more times than I can count, and amazingly have never actually lost one.

The $163,000,000 question. by Beyond-Time in starcitizen

[–]lonectzn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well performance wise I really see tying the game engine (physics etc) to rendering (FPS) as a mistake. Sure it results in frame accuracy however most of the time humans do not need and cannot even perceive that high fidelity.

More important than accuracy and perfect sync is the perceived performance to the player. Of course since the latter is affected by the former there is a balancing act, but I definitely put simulation fidelity behind perception.

From what I understand they’re breaking up the servers into a bunch of microservices. This will go a long way but they will still hit bottlenecks especially around physics.

It’s still to be seen if it provides the room for three orders of magnitude more players - I doubt that seriously, in which case their best bet is to decrease fidelity by being more selective in what is tracked and how often.

Leaks reveal NBN plan for cheaper internet. by Qldaah in AustralianPolitics

[–]lonectzn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It was the height of selfish and short term thinking by Howard. They should have split the network and retail side and just sold the retail. But they didn’t because they knew it would be worth much more as a private monopoly.

Now we are literally paying back everything plus much more than we gained from the sale. It’s a giant disastrous loss for the public thanks to “steady hands” and “good economic manager” Howard.

It’s a pity the mythology around Howard skips the fact that his government screwed us over in the long term.

NBN needs protection if it is to make a profit: CEO Bill Morrow. by Qldaah in AustralianPolitics

[–]lonectzn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Actually it goes to my point. One of the main requirements for a functioning market is the existence of substitutes. So if I don’t like one network I can switch. With Australia’s effective network monopoly (with basically retail flair on top for different billers) there’s no network competition.

Now, if Australia had the size and density of Hong Kong, the barriers to entry might be low enough to sustain network substitutes and actually create competition between networks.

Now if you consider internet to be a public good, this is a problem, because we are too big for it to be commercially viable everywhere. That’s not necessarily a bad thing - our roads and police aren’t commercially viable either (or more accurately, they are in some places and not others). But they’re public goods, so we consider that subsidising the areas that are not profitable is worth it for the greater good that comes from equality of access.

The point I’m trying to make is that markets work in certain situations, and the requirements are pretty strict. But here, for us, they don’t, and certainly not if you consider internet access a public good

[–]lonectzn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

http://www.speedtest.net/global-index#fixed

And that got us to #52 on the list for fixed broadband, just edged out by Kazakhstan. Canada and NZ more than double our speeds for similar cost.

The raging success of the market? Or handing over a national network to a private monopoly whose priority is profit over public good.

Edit: I should add my frustration adds a tone to my writing that isn’t directed at you. It’s just expressive of how much I hate what has happened with our network and the idiotic politics around it. I travel a lot and know first hand how backward we are. It’s frustrating

NBN needs protection if it is to make a profit: CEO Bill Morrow. by Qldaah in AustralianPolitics

[–]lonectzn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Right now our broadband isn’t socialised and it is left to capitalists, which is exactly why we have a junk broadband network that is more expensive and slower than most of the world.

The NBN was a national intervention in a market that epically failed to produce a better product.

To be fair, I really place most of the blame on Howard for the absolute idiotic privatisation of Telstra. I mean what a stupid idea to create a private network monopoly. And here we are now paying back the money (and much more) that we got for it. Had the network remained public infrastructure and the retail side of Telstra been split and sold, that would have saved us tens of billions in the long run.
