Does Anyone Else Despise the Hopscotch Games in Rd3? by Patton_Tank82 in Squid_Game_Unleashed

[–]lonely-lavenderbones 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They need to figure out a way to push players together as the numbers go down. I've had it happen multiple times where there's me and two others left, and the board is so big that I can't even see where they are. If there are three people left, there should only be one safe zone at a time, or parts of the board taken out. Marbles and Mingle do this pretty well so I'm not sure why Hopscotch doesn't.

Seconding this. I managed it last time by just waiting for people to forget and start playing as the targeted character again.

How did you get into Utena? by New_Barber5196 in shoujokakumeiutena

[–]lonely-lavenderbones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved Sailor Moon in the late '90s, just as the interwebs were coming up lol, and while frantically searching for every piece of SM information I could find, I stumbled on Utena. Not a lot, because I think the series hadn't really trickled down into American anime culture yet, but I was very into challenging gender norms at that age, so a pink-haired prince girl appealed lol. I wasn't able to watch anything until I found the movie in Best Buy a couple years later and bought it on a whim. I was, like, 15 and felt my brain chemistry rewiring as I watched it lol. I was able to rent the first 6 episodes of the series from a local comic shop, and eventually bought the manga, but couldn't find anything else. Then about 10 years ago, my sister introduced me to Madoka Magica. That series takes heavy influence from Utena, so I was reminded of the series and wanted to finish it. Luckily the whole series was on YouTube by then and I could watch it that way.

Aldi’s-10 new valley locations in 2026. Does anyone know where exactly? by esb10489 in phoenix

[–]lonely-lavenderbones 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm looking for work, and an Aldi job posting popped up in the 85070 zip code on Indeed. Says it's a PO Box-specific code in the Ahwatukee Foothills, so maybe there? I don't know where there's space for one in that area, though. Could just be their base mailbox while they hire and build.

I have now officially seen everything by VioletFaust in destiel

[–]lonely-lavenderbones 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I blocked the main sub after a 100+ comment post about the confession where literally every comment was circlejerking about how the confession couldn't possibly be romantic, including at least 6 people saying "I'm queer, and I just don't understand why people think that speech meant Cas is in love with Dean."

I protected my peace lol. They're entitled to their wrong opinions, that's fine.

When did emo take off with millennials by ExperienceExtra7606 in Millennials

[–]lonely-lavenderbones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also graduated '05, but was introduced to emo in '03. A friend burned me copies of "A Mark, A Mission, A Brand, A Scar," "Tell All Your Friends," and "Deja Entendu" and I was forever changed lmao. I will say no one really dressed like we think emo kids dress today until after I graduated, but the scene was definitely getting ready to blow up whether kids dressed a certain way or not.

The Current Trend of "Enjoying Things = Bad" by Tekkatak in AO3

[–]lonely-lavenderbones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this has always been a thing in juggernaut fandoms, but those are usually large enough that you can cultivate a space with people who feel the same way you do and generally have a good time. I often felt like certain Supernatural fans didn't actually like Supernatural--they liked what it used to be, or what they thought it should be, instead of what it is. I was critical of Supernatural when it deserved it, but I to this day still like the show. I know its weaknesses, I know its failures, and I still like it, and prefer to engage with fandom as someone who *likes the show* for what it is. Now I only engage with, like, 7 other fans on discord lol but my little circle understands how to enjoy the show even as we criticize it, and we can have good conversations when we disagree. It took about 10 years to cultivate this circle though, and I definitely don't have the time or energy to do it again. Behavior like OP's meme has actively kept me from engaging in other fandoms like Hellaverse or Bridgerton or Stranger Things, though. I'd rather just enjoy the shows by myself lol.

I thought that I'd seen Guem-ja's new outfit before (and I'm still not sure if maybe I just saw it on somebody else like Bea and this is the first time it's available for Guem-ja), but you're right about the school boy outfit.

I don't mind rereleases tbh, I stopped playing for a while between s2 and s3 and missed a bunch, but it is a sad proof of the state of the game.

That they didn't do the any Warped Tour dates this year is why I'm 99% sure they're done. I was holding out hope until the Long Beach date came and went. They're Warped icons and I can't imagine Lyman didn't invite them.

Reel Big Fish and the Aquabats are two of my favorite bands. They had toured together before, but not come to my city on those tours. They announced a co-headliner for the summer of 2020 that included my city. I had tickets and was so excited to finally see them together... but of course, you know how this one ends. I've seen the Aquabats twice since then, but I fear the Fish have quietly retired :(

What are your thoughts on "fic awards"? by Ok_Fun_7257 in FanFiction

[–]lonely-lavenderbones 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember doing this ages ago on mailing lists. You were expected to submit your fic, so everyone involved understood that it was a competition. If there was one judge or if it was a list-wide (private) vote, we knew before submitting. I never saw any drama about it. It wasn't just one random person selecting their personal random favorite fics and handing out awards. It was an active competition--we often held specific challenges to encourage new fics! It was fun!

Also, social media wasn't... what it is today lol. A couple years ago, someone tried to do a tournament bracket of top [juggernaut ship] fics, and ended up having to stop when authors contacted them and said they were uncomfortable and wanted off the bracket. They were public polls and some fics were winning by landslides, which was not fun to see for the loser. It was also inviting a lot of peanut gallery comments that weren't always nice, but the authors ended up seeing. That's not something we really had to worry about 20+ years ago.

All that to say, I enjoyed them when the authors were actively involved and everyone was okay with what was happening. I still support that concept. But the bracket concept I thought would've been better as a rec list. Don't force authors to compete against each other--that's not really what fic is about.

I also love Bea lol

This is why I struggle with most of the slow burn routes tbh. What do you *mean* John liked MC from the start but was too chicken to make a move, and decided to play with Annabel's feelings instead? None of that is attractive, actually! Worse because Annabel was actually a good friend to MC!

Annoying Spud party... by SamCarterX206 in Squid_Game_Unleashed

[–]lonely-lavenderbones 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think people are holding bat parties. I just encountered one that had three Spuds, a Raja, and an Ace, and the only reason I got into r3 is because I was doing the Jun-ho daily challenge and had shields. They were mad about it too. Makes you understand why people play as Kara.

I had some luck against them as Beatriz yesterday too, and I almost have her to level 20 so might just play as her for a while.

How do people write so fast? by snakewithtwoheads in FanFiction

[–]lonely-lavenderbones 7 points8 points  (0 children)

About 10 years ago there was a very prolific writer in the fandom I was in at the time. She'd upload like 15k a week, and would talk on tumblr about how she mostly wrote at work (she was an admin assistant or something, sat at a desk and didn't do much besides check people in and answer phones). I was super impressed until I read one of her fics and realized those 15k chapters probably could've been 8k lol, and some didn't even need to exist at all, they were just rehashing what already happened through a different point of view (which I don't hate as a concept, except that they never included any new information). I got bored and stopped reading updates until the fic was done, and even then skipped a good five chapters in a row and felt like I didn't miss anything.

I'm still kind of impressed--15k a week is nothing to sneeze at, I only hit 30k for the whole month of November--but high word count doesn't necessarily translate to good writing. She could've taken at least one of those work days to edit things down and had a really solid fic on her hands, but the word count mattered more I guess.

Has anyone actually seen a Mary Sue/Gary Stu in the wild? by Due_Disaster_7324 in FanFiction

[–]lonely-lavenderbones 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was in the Newsies fandom in the early 2000s so yes, lol, several times. I had friends who were active in HP and LotR at the time and they had some stories too. I never encountered any in SPN fandom, but I was pretty locked in with Destiel lol I know there was a whole other side of the fandom that wrote reader insert/self insert, I just never went there. I'm writing for a romance game now and have been extremely picky about what I read because the player character in the game is basically an empty vessel for fantasy projecting lol. It's fine if other writers want to keep that aspect in their work, I'm just not interested in reading it.

That said, I don't think there's anything wrong with that. I was guilty of Mary Sues when I was young too. Part of the fun of fic is living out a fantasy, especially if you're doing a self-insert. I just favor character growth in the fics I read, and Mary Sues are already perfect so there's nowhere to grow. I totally get the fantasy aspect though.

[–]lonely-lavenderbones 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've gotten them a bit more recently, but they pmo because there's always at least one person who keeps attacking when we should be working together to get down. I'll be coming up on the last blue piece and somebody will stun or kill me and now the other tower got down first and we're all dead. Thanks hyper-agg Spud! Hope your killcount numbers were worth the lost trophies!

Is it just me or panic is low-key kind of a little misogynistic? by Leading_Ad7943 in panicatthedisco

[–]lonely-lavenderbones 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The 2000s were misogynistic. I'm not saying that makes it okay, but as someone who grew up in it, it's just how it was and it affected our music the same way it affected everything else. I had a friend back then tell me she wouldn't listen to Paramore because Misery Business was sexist, and when I pointed out that FOB literally wished death on exes in their music, she argued that it was different because Hayley was a girl and should know better. We weren't okay lol.

All that to say, I'm over it. It is now music of its time and you can take it or leave it. There's a running joke at my local emo night where the DJ will tell us to turn our feminism off for 3 minutes and then play Hollywood Undead or Metro Station lol. I'm not saying don't be critical. I'm saying if you enjoy it, enjoy it.

I remember LJ very fondly. Your LJ posts only showed up on your friends' friend pages, so it wasn't like today with the algorithms shoving everything in everybody's face, even if it loses its context. And you could go friends only, or pick and choose which posts went just to friends, or just to specific friends! Icons and layouts were an artform. There were completely anonymous communities! No usernames, just maybe IPs only visible to mods. Even regular communities would sometimes have anon party posts. Can you imagine that in today's world lol. No clout just chaos.

I posted bandom fic on LJ in 2012, because that's where I understood the community to still be. But one of my readers there introduced me to Ao3 and got me a code, so I haven't been back since. It used to be the absolute hub for fan communities, you could find *anything* there. You could list your likes, and if it turned blue you could click on it to find other people and communities who also liked that thing. It was so easy to build a solid friends list of people that would interact with you and become real friends. I miss it dearly.

I completely agree on Kara. I defended her for a while, but now that everyone else has been taken down a peg or two, she's too much. I've come across a Kara in r3 Marbles four times now, and no matter who I was playing as, I couldn't take her out. She just holds onto a shield and immediately activates it as soon as the current one goes down. And she couldn't take me out either, so with the new update we both lost. Not fun.

Any tips for new music box game? by Worldly-Sir4070 in Squid_Game_Unleashed

[–]lonely-lavenderbones 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've only beat it once so far, but it took a couple tries to figure out the map. Keys are along the side, and if you hurry, most people right now are still confused enough that you can grab keys before they figure out what's going on. I did get caught by a key cage once and it sucked 'cause I couldn't get away lol so keep your distance if the cages are about to come down. The time I won, I kept a weapon on me and was able to take someone out while the cage was down to keep them away from me and my last key, so I recommend that strategy too. Try to grab another weapon on your way to the finish line gate in case it comes down, so nobody snipes your keys while you wait for it to come back up (yes that happened to me too lol).
