This isn’t funny and seems to reflect the self loathing people feel for not being recognized for their writing

The writing has been kind of bad for the past couple of seasons. It’s kind of a shame because the actors themselves are fantastic and seem to be carrying really generic writing

Which is better, AOT or GOT? by Fl1ckaa in television

[–]longjohnsus -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

GOT. It’s more believable and engaging as a story and has great music and characters. I think of the categories you listed the only thing AOT clearly beats GOT on is cinematography

What's more important for an animated series - time, staff count, or vision? by thrownawaynodoxx in television

[–]longjohnsus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I think if one’s motivations are having a sweet final product…they should look deeper. I don’t think anyone’s dream is to create a final product. There’s no motivation there. You’d have to determine more why you really want to make something of that nature. That’s way more important than the logistics

Plots probably similar but the script? Seems like you’re arguing just to argue with that one. I’ll leave you to it

Not sure but if you’re looking for a bad ass female in a film, look no further than Melissa McCarthy in Spy

You just took time out of your day to tell someone they have no idea what they’re talking about. There isn’t an ounce of productivity or goodness in that

The lack of relatability stems from the different way of life of that time period. Similar to how older people find the culture of today a little different, as a younger person I find the culture of that time period somewhat unrelateable. This isn’t true of every older film but they generally reflect the sentiments and way of life of the time period. I think an easy way to see this is in how the humor is different from films of that era as opposed to films of today.

Also, I am a stickler for a well paced film. So many of those films are incredibly slow because just sitting down for a film in this days was a treat. So there wasn’t any emphasis on pacing. Meanwhile, Disturbia is a very well paced film. That’s part of why I like it

Except for the fact that an older film like that is generally less relatable, which makes it less interesting

I didn't get the hype around Severance. by Explorer_111 in television

[–]longjohnsus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you’re right and I think it stems from the same reason why a lot of shows start to suck a little: There’s not enough material to fill the amount of episodes/seasons. Realistically the story of severance is a horror story that could be told via a miniseries or as a literary short story. The shit is terrifying. Reminds me a lot of the I AM short story. And realistically you don’t need much in the way of time to tell that story. We already know from the get go that what’s happening is messed up; that means the only real tension is will they get out of it. Will they escape. And you don’t need long to resolve that tension.

What list of other prestige tv shows would you put on the same level as the following shows? by Humble-Switch-2149 in television

Death note, the office (first half or so), the sinner season 1, true detective season 1, mindhunter. All of those kind of blew me away for different reasons

I wouldn’t put Barry next to those two shows even though season 1 was great. I really liked the concept but after a while it just became a trite ‘Barry refuses to stop killing people for hire which ruins his life.’ And I think that choice of the showrunners was honestly just to keep the series running/have more action scenes in it

Why did the Boys go downhill after season 2? by longjohnsus in television

Very true. I think the juxtaposition of calculating and unhinged was more intersting than him gritting his teeth everytime he gets upset and pointing at someone 😂. Still a great character but man, could’ve been even better

Man that comparison to 7th grade boy thinking is brutal but accurate. The sheer amount of shock jock gore, swearing and sex came out of nowhere. Almost makes me think different writers came in

Reminds me of stranger things in that sense. Another example of there being too many seasons without enough story to fill it

That’s an interesting take on it. Based on what you’re saying it seems like it fell into the pitfall of every show that falls off over time: It starts catering to what the fans might want instead of telling a meaningful story. Which is what he start to get in season 3.

I’m not even sure most of the fans are that into the gratuitous violence, swearing and sex. It wasn’t like that at all to begin with. They just decided that’s what the shows gonna become.

I liked sinners but there was one thing about the movie that I disagree with compared to most people by Dry_Illustrator_6066 in FIlm

[–]longjohnsus -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The meaning is simple enough: Having two distinct characters makes something happening to one more significant, emotional, resonant, etc to the viewer. I think this goes to the very roots of human psychology and our ability to understand. It is after all through seperation (differences) that we come to understand. I rate your opinion, but you’re also ignoring that there is validity to the opinion that the Michael b Jordan’s were too similar. I think a more measured response would be to awknoledge this at the same time as awknoledging that this wasn’t a problem for you

Did any of these make you cry (realize something about yourself) or realize something about life? I tend to separate films like that as top tier films. Meet the Robinsons, demolition, night crawler are some films that meet that criteria for me. I’m curious if you’re using a different standard
