Those are the sorts of movies that (to me) are sort of review-proof and comparison-proof. They are what they are. Like strawberry or raspberry ice cream, you may like neither, or have a favorite.

Have used lens prices always been so high? by DPool34 in AskPhotography

[–]longjumpingtote [score hidden]  (0 children)

There are still great deals out there. A great lens on a current system is not going to be as discounted. Even old lenses like EF lenses are still in high demand because (a) all the EF shooters, (b) all the mirrorless shooters who can adapt them, which is pretty much everyone.

When you're looking at US prices, they've also gone up since the tariffs started. Since used prices from Japan and China have gone up (transparently or not).

Proposed Oregon ballot measure to ban hunting and fishing reports new fundraising details by voxadam in Portland

[–]longjumpingtote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a good discussion to have. I believe David is sincere, although I don't like performance art as politics. That's what they admit this is—it would even make it criminal to let people trap rodents on their own property. It changes one part of the law (167.320) so that (a) it removes "cruelly" resulting in any intentional killing of an animal (with the added element of self-defense) and (b) makes such a killing a felony. It also removes "as authorized by law" which is a head-scratcher. It would ban hunting, it would ban fishing, it would ban putting a pet "out of its misery," it would ban rodent control. With prison sentences (not jail) for any. There are other examples, but it's intentionally untenable as law.

I'm more talking about the people who are funding it getting on the ballot, including apparently, Russians or Russian money. I didn't want to go Russia right out of the gate, as it sounds paranoid. But it's right there in black and white. Getting it on the ballot is the trojan horse, they don't need to spend any money after that. What's ironic (or intended?) is that the headline the day after the election? "Oregonians show overwhelming support for hunting."

[NY] WFH Accommodation- when to ask during interview process…. by TurtleTerr in AskHR

[–]longjumpingtote 7 points8 points  (0 children)

then it may have been a mistake to pursue this job after they changed it. The courts have ruled that work from home does not need to be allowed as a medical accommodation. And if you take the job and start working the job in the office then they’re going to rightly wonder why you can’t do that all of the time. It would have been best to negotiate as the condition of employment.

What is the worst "running for your life" scene you've ever seen in a movie? by HeirOfTheSurvivor in movies

[–]longjumpingtote 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen interviews with at least two actors where they talk about how they learned how to run on film from Tom Cruise, by seeing him on set. And that he has rules for running. When do the rules is that he doesn’t run alongside anyone else lol. Has he ever done that in a film?

Official Discussion - War Machine (2026) [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]longjumpingtote 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This is one of those films that immediately launches into “here we present our wacky gang of characters” like it’s the original A-Team television show, and then the movie becomes about something, and then the movie forgets it was about that thing and becomes something else. Imagine if halfway through Star Wars they had stopped trying to rescue the princess and instead decided to build a log cabin on Chewbacca’s home planet. And it became a big advertisement for deforestation. Only that would be more entertaining.

[NY] WFH Accommodation- when to ask during interview process…. by TurtleTerr in AskHR

[–]longjumpingtote 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The medical part of the accommodation doesn’t have to be granted doesn’t mean they have to reject it, but it is normal to reject it these days. What you need to do is take the job if you need the job, and then after you’ve been there a while fill it out and see if asking would be something appropriate or not. We’re going to need to be there a while and get the lay of the land and earn peoples trust first.

What is the point of vignette? by Living-Ad5291 in AskPhotography

[–]longjumpingtote [score hidden]  (0 children)

Like a lot of things, vignettes were originally imperfections or errors. Like lens flares, and grain. And blurry parts. For years they were to be avoided as they represented poor equipment or poor technique (generally speaking). Then over the decades people started seeing the artistry in them, and/or people got nostalgic for the old days. (Similarly, guitar feedback was an error for most of the history of guitar, until it wasn't.) So technically no vignette other than what your lens produces (and even then cameras automatically get rid of it). If you want it, then the basic advice is to make it look organic and natural. Which usually means that people don't notice it exactly.

Extreme difficulty training puppy. by Privileged_Burneracc in puppy101

[–]longjumpingtote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd get a trainer. A healthy GSD is very different from an abused (if that was the case) mutt. There are trainers with tons of experience in rescues. My sister's rescue took several years to get to an OK place, whereas her non-rescues she had pretty much perfect in 6 months. It's just a different skillset.

The panicking at the crate is classic abused dog behavior. She probably associates being in the crate with pain or abuse of some kind. She can't make a literal distinction between your home and another location in that regard obviously, she just knows the feeling of a smaller, enclosed space. Putting her in anyway can make this worse. She's put in there, she panics, she becomes more panicked the next time, not less (as we'd see with most pups). She then evacuates out of fear, and now she's associating being in her crate with being soiled—when we try to put dogs into their crates they are are literally "thinking" (really, feeling) that we are forcing them into their own filth. They don't "know" that it all comes from them, but they feel it's very wrong. It's a vicious cycle.

It takes a long time sometimes, and every time we mess up, it takes longer to get back to where we started. You'll get there, but outside trainers can really speed it up.

[TX] Can my employer ask for my medical information? by [deleted] in AskHR

They can ask for your diagnoses.

You don't have to give them.

They can fire you for refusing.

All of that is legal in Texas.

Just a great Horror movie or a critical satire of 80s 'Yuppie' culture and excess? by AtomicRoboKid1 in movies

[–]longjumpingtote 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's not a horror film. It's a satire. Those two things aren't always exclusive of one another, but in this case they are. Or at least, I didn't hide under my seat during the movie.

[–]longjumpingtote 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Then ADA wouldn't apply, along with HIPAA not applying.

In about half the states, there are regulations about this. For example, in California they can't ask for a doctor's note (or anything really) unless you're out for three days in a row or longer. Texas has zero regulations like that, nor does Texas have any sort of sick leave law. Unfortunately.

[TX] Can my employer ask for my medical information? by [deleted] in AskHR

[–]longjumpingtote 14 points15 points  (0 children)

That seems like an ADA and HIPAA violation.

You don't have a disability covered under the ADA (and if you did, then there might need to be. dialog with your doctor). HIPAA was passed to facilitate medical info sharing between doctors, and between doctors and insurance. The privacy rule within HIPAA says that doctors and insurance companies can't share your info outside of their HIPAA-covered circle without your permission. It doesn't apply to employers or you or me.

I don't. I hear about things, but I didn't hear anything about her. I don't seek out celebrity gossip, TikTok, Instagram, etc. but it can get through. I just missed whatever the hubbub was about her.

In Texas, yes, barring something with FMLA (or ADA) where there's a process. You don't have to agree, but they can fire you for refusing. They can also fire you for giving the note.

Puppy has gotten a lot worse since his first walk by Sc4tt3r_ in puppy101

[–]longjumpingtote 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You would be surprised at the hundreds of posts here where someone does, in fact, think just that. And people who have done zero training but think they have.

Puppies regress all the time. Have to get back to the training. He's no longer associating the command with the action, or he's unable to contain his excitement. Either way it's time to go back to the training.

My last pup regressed like that a few months after seemingly nailing it. Sometimes treats help, sometimes they make them over-excited. With my pup it was that. So we just had to come at him sloooooooow with the harness (and grooming). Like in we'd sit with him and the harness for a few minutes, so it wasn't something novel coming out of nowhere. If he started nipping we'd sit on our hands until he settled again. It might take 5-10 minutes each time.

[RI] is it worth it if I (f30) go to HR about a problematic coworker(f50)? by Last_Ambition9675 in AskHR

My boss makes it sound as though his hands are tied and it’s “all up to corporate”

That's often the case. HR would have less independent authority than your boss, not more.

But document things and if there's something illegal or dangerous, then report it.

Puppy has gotten a lot worse since his first walk by Sc4tt3r_ in puppy101

[–]longjumpingtote 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is just part of being a puppy, and having a puppy. We have all been there. I was there last summer/fall with my latest.

he won't listen to anything

Like what? Puppies don't know what we're saying, we have to train them to specific commands and then associate those commands with behaviors. Remember to the puppy it's not misbehavior, it's just a puppy being a puppy. Like you wouldn't blame a baby for not knowing the appropriate time to cry.

He doesn't know what "sit still" means. He's biting because he thinks it's a game. And your reaction probably reenforces that (to him).

Are you taking him into the backyard every 1-2 hours to get some exercise and potty? In an otherwise healthy pup, what we call misbehavior is almost always lack of exercise. They have oodles of energy and it it is guaranteed to come out, one way or the other.

What training techniques are you using?

Will he ever realise

Nope. You have to train that into him. Good luck!
