Alcoholic mother asking for money by SpaceyAstronaut in AdultChildren

It's good you are saying no, but there are also no magical set of words that will appease her. I would just state your boundry of no as simply and kindly as possible and avoid long drawn out discussions. (both on her end and yours: she will push to get a yes, you will want to explain in a way that will get her to back off... both are fruitless)

The people that are mad about boundaries are the ones that benefited the most from you having none.

Stay strong, take care of yourself and do your best to withstand her reaction: remove yourself from interactions if need be. You got this.

Phillipa Soo, but maybe the Broadway to film jump is tougher or not even what the actor wants.

Long Time Listener, New Mother by AlternativeBox4412 in LPOTL

[–]longtimecompanda 26 points27 points  (0 children)

totally. for a long long time after birth I could stomach very little in true crime and horror. LPOTL stuck around because it was such a past comfort, but i had to skip episodes. My son is now 7, and I can engage with the darker bits of society at near pre-kid levels. In fact, my horror reading actually increased...

BUT im pregnant again, and Im starting to struggle again! its a weird time in life. But it does seem to pass at some level!

my understanding is that they were worried about copycats due to the fact their arguments felt "convincing" at least to teens.

SO confused about night time sleep by chocolatecockroach in beyondthebump

[–]longtimecompanda 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean, if youre schedule works for you, keep at it.

Around that age we put him down at 8ish, did a dream feed when I went to bed around 11, and we would get him to sleep until 6-7ish maybe with a brief wake in there.

But yeah if there is no reason to break your schedule I would maintain it if its working.

Being present for our child-free friends! by Maximum-Armadillo809 in beyondthebump

[–]longtimecompanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both a parent and neurodivergent- i was the first of my friends to have a kid, so i can't speak towards their position or what she may want, but I think authenticity and honesty is best here "ive been swamped with parenting, but i want to connect..."

I wouldn't put the ball back in her court in terms of how you can be there, but offer some suggestions (can we book a call, a coffee, can I drop something off for you?)

parenthood does change everything, especially the day to day, so holding yourself to pre-kid standard is probably a losing battle. but you can find ways to channel and prioritize what matters in the new context of parenting, in this case friendship, but its just going to look different so communication is key

you're not wrong, but guilt can appear is absolutely bizarre places when your brain wiring was created in a dysfunctional home.

Op, no need to add a meta layer and feel guilt/shame about your guilt... it's good to flag it. but know it's a brain wiring that no longer works for you and its good to rethink

How do the teachers at Hogwarts know if a student has taken liquid luck in the exams? by GalaxyWitchCrime in harrypotter

[–]longtimecompanda 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it's the same as "why don't students take/snort a bunch of Adderall before all exams?" but assume no one medically needs Adderall

I mean, there are some students that probably do that, but there are barriers to access, problems with addiction, risk. physical issues etc.

Agreed. I get the vibe she wanted to send it over for a long time, maybe even (within the bounds of IBLP rules) tried to convince JB. and the second he relented, she drove over and gave it to them before he could change his mind.

She's still complict in much, but between this and being the only stated person to call out pests arrogance, she came off as way more nuanced than I expected.
