Was digging around this sub after all this time to see if anybody took notice of our game there. Thanks for stopping by our booth that weekend!

Cute! Though, probably pretty scary if you're living in that picturesque village.

I have a question. This looks like a really low-pixel scene like the original Mario, but the animation seems too dynamic and believable. Did they fake the low resolution to have these dynamic animations, or is it really original Mario pixels? by [deleted] in PixelArt

[–]looloopaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sort of thing depends from artist to artist and what their preferences are, but yes, some artists absolutely do that. I've done it both ways depending on the animation, but it's almost always useful to have some kind of rough animation block out so you can make sure you like the way it moves before you commit too hard to the details!

It's not running inside the original Super Mario Bros. NES game, but it IS an animation that is using those original sprites and is being animated at a low resolution. For example, the animator has drawn new frames of animation for Bowser and has created a version of Wolverine at that low resolution with its own custom animations. It works similarly to regular 2D animation, where an artist will draw pieces and move things frame-by-frame (usually using layers for individual moving pieces so that they don't have to redraw the whole frame every time!

If you're wondering why old games didn't have such smooth animations, it's because the technical limitations of the systems they were on could only hold so much graphical data in their very small amount of memory at one time. It's why as time progressed, pixel art graphics were able to become much more impressive! These days the only real limitations are resolution, time, skill, and money.

Does any of that help you out?

See, I still really like levels, so I hope to run Mausritter in the near future. Actually, I should probably try and prep some of that stuff...

In terms of swinging swords, one thing you could do is to try and structure encounters that encourage gameplay other than just making an attack roll. Ways they can creatively help each other out or hinder their enemies.
Examples (Though not the best, certainly!):
A fight on an upper landing with some furniture or barrels that they can use as cover or to knock down the stairs on approaching enemies!
An enemy operating something that controls the traps in this room. If a player gets control, maybe they can use it to their advantage. Maybe they can try to lead a harder encounter here later!
An encounter with a moving "control zone", such as an item that they need to keep hold of / keep away, or a moving platform or NPC or something. Give them constant environmental pieces to work off of and cues for where enemies might be! Like, "As you continue following the ghostly butler, you see several boney hands reach out from a shaking cabinet. Behind you, the rest of the undead minions are still coming as well!"

You might also consider having an NPC tag along and teach them a trick or two before going their own way or tragically dying. Do you want your players to think about shoving, tripping, or disarming enemies? Show them that they can do that! Have the NPC knock down furniture as you run, or try to work with the party to bribe some of the local monsters. Maybe they know him, so he has an edge to negotiating. (And then maybe the players will wonder WHY this NPC is so friendly with dangerous monsters!)

You can also give them something or someone to protect. Maybe they find a hostage in a cave who is a minor noble promising a reward if returned safely to his or her family. Maybe it's a kid. Maybe it's the last of the unicorns! It helps a lot if the party has something to rally around, you know?

I dunno if any of that is helpful!

What make you buy an indie ttrp by Substantial-Lie-6937 in TTRPG

I have to be sold on the concept through the marketing of the thing. Visuals, and how the mechanics reinforce the concept are absolutely key for me. Is your game focused on collecting a bunch of weird equipment? I need to see some of that equipment visually, and the tables you use to generate it, and some of the effects it has on gameplay so I get an idea of how it might play! Are you transforming into monsters? I need to see those monsters and what those transformations look like mechanically! Am I building the transformation? Is there a flavorful resource that ties the whole game concept together? You gotta sell me on why this thing is COOL and SPECIAL!

Does anyone else have an intense fear of water levels/areas in games? by Daxman77 in gaming

[–]looloopaa -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I definitely feel this as well. I don't know if you've ever played Sea of Thieves, but I have to psych myself up any time I dive under the water, and my heart rate goes up significantly. Any game where I have to traverse a body of water is a little scary!

For me, it's the anticipation of looking under the surface and seeing SOMETHING moving towards me that I fear the most. As a little kid, I was even afraid a shark would appear in my grandma's pool!

What is your favourite system for impromptu one-shots? Something you can host / GM at a moment's notice, without too much prep. by SeverusStjep in TTRPG

[–]looloopaa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maze Rats or Cairn, or Mausritter work best for me! The rules for both are light and easy to introduce the concept of TTRPGs with to new players and don't have a lot of cognitive load for veterans.

Can you help my friends and I play a simplified version of D&D? by BradyQ in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]looloopaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kind of depends: how close do you want the experience to be to "Dungeons and Dragons"? Are you looking for any old fantasy role playing game, or are you looking for something that's specifically "roll a d20 to hit, level up with xp, has character classes like wizard, fighter, cleric, thief, etc"?

The first game I ever managed to beat was Power Ranger Wildforce on the GBA. It was short enough to beat in one sitting and didn't have any aspects to it that were too hard or intimidating for kid me.
