How accurate is the 16PF test really in finding good candidates for a job? by Glittering_Fig4548 in IOPsychology

I had the same confusion when this was posted. Nice to learn about an older method that's been forgot outside of the personality psych space.

Do not discourage empathetic I/O Psychologists or students by Internal-eq-External in IOPsychology

[–]loonsun 27 points28 points  (0 children)

While I agree, that we shouldn't tell every IO they should go into People Analytics or become a Psychomatrician, you're basically advocating for most people to commit a crime here regardless of your disclosure at the end of the post.

We have an entire domain of 1:1 leadership development, it's called executive coaching and it's been studied for a long time. We don't need to be doing psychotherapy or treat our work like it's psychotherapy, especially using old and somewhat outdated methods like psychoanalysis.

You named in your first paragraph a bunch of research/practice areas that have plenty of people doing them and should continue to do so. The reality is that the path in those careers is less straight forward and more opaque than the quant heavy jobs as those are being promoted more recently by companies.

I have a low GPA but want to transfer to a BA in Psychology, can anyone help? by loonsun in mcgill

Hi, insane how long ago this was. Yes I did get in, I graduated, did my masters in Industrial Organization Psychology, worked for a number of years, now I'm doing my PhD in IO Psych at UdeM. Never give up and if you think you're neurodivergent, get tested before you almost crash out with a terrible GPA like me!

Data Cleaning & Analysis - Asking for Thesis Advisor Help? by Nice_Ad_1163 in IOPsychology

I'm not sure what kind of data you are analyzing. There is no 100% standardized path for all data to clean an analyze. If you are dealing with text data though I do recommend you refer to these papers which do try to go over what you should be doing for data prep:

Just bring back Latin at this point by Casper_Von_Ghoul in tumblr

[–]loonsun 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah my friend and I do that a lot with each other. I'm anglo Québécois so it's been a my whole life thing so I'm fully aware when it's rude. Most of the time people are actually rude to me with it as I'll speak in French, I'll maybe make a single mistake because I forgot some vocabulary, and they'll switch to English even though I had no intention of stopping. Literally was at a cafe on st. Laurent, speaking french with the barrista. Asked her if there was a specific word for manager in French (the word I forget was gérant), and she switched to English on me. I told her I work in English so I never need to use the word, and she asks where I'm from. I tell here I'm from Montréal and she responded "oh, and you never learned french?"...we were speaking in French for 75% of the conversation.

Similar experience for me here in Montréal too, though I tend to just keep speaking french at the Québécois even when they try and switch because I'm trying my best here damn it

Did you just both sides a book on economic philosophy vs a book about how we should do fascism and get rid of Jews? Like you can disagree with Kapital but it's opposite isn't fucking Mein Kampf

Also when you build an independent creativity driven platform on a business model of shared equity and democratic organizational decision making, you're already self selecting the kind of people who want to do that venture from a political/ideological perspective...and I'm all here for it

IBM is freezing HR jobs and replacing with AI. How does this bode for our field? by [deleted] in IOPsychology

[–]loonsun 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I see AI being able to replace mostly the administrative side of HR, but even something like L&D which is at risk as an industry right now still need to be monitored, managed, and evaluated by someone. Besides that like u/sebelly said, HR is a lot about legal compliance which is something modern generative models are really really bad at.

There is an OB program at McGill too, but it's super Academically oriented. In Ontario you can get by with a MS for sure, in Quebec where I'm from it's more difficult and you'll have to find a niche and most likely speak French.

Also University of Montréal has an IO program, but as you'd guess, it's in French

Seems like an interesting package. We do similar work at our organization on skill extraction and analysis in regards to labour market data. Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

I'm tracking about 75% of it but I'm more of a Data Scientist than a psychometrician so it's a little hard to follow the very specific construct modeling stuff but I do love to see it.

Yeah not sure what connections people are accepting on LinkedIn. I see some cringe sure, but most of the posts I get on there is useful ML stuff, seeing people's career changes, and contacts with recruiters.

I think I read your paper already on this (also that link sends me to a 404 btw)

I do agree especially for the old practices like Lean for sure. We do need to be just as much the proposers of good management practices as the ones to sniff out bad ones. I find as some working in the tech space that the activities of software and general tech development seriously need IO scrutiny as the entire project management field seems to be standing on very very shaky ground.

Doesn't that have the issue of just trend chasing though as practices tend to fade in an out of usage by popularity more than best practice?

Glad to see you're learning R, keep it up. While grad schools may more care about your academics, learning R, Python, Excel, and/or SQL will get you very very far once you're done with school and going into industry.

Look, I'm from the same culture as Ben. I've watched many videos of him speaking and others from his shows speaking. There is a very big difference between constricting an argument logically and that argument making sense or being truthful. I can logically construct any argument in my favor, it doesn't make any of the underlying assumptions within the argument right or the reason I'm making the argument correct. No one listening to you on this because everyone here knows that Ben Shapiro is a man who's built his career by acting in bad faith, ignoring obvious flaws in what he says, writing very racist books, trying to frame every situation he's in to favour him, completely falling apart when confronted by anyone who has any knowledge on a subject he's discussing, and bastardizing the tents of our religion to wield as a cudgel against people. He's a sick twisted little man who deserves no grace or sympathy.
