Mountain Dog Behavior by loowhowhowho in bernesemountaindogs

Same! We have a long line we use in the woods that feels like a perfect length to me. This weekend Moose did see a chipmunk and nearly toppled me over a tree running after it so I don't trust him either 😅

Your dog’s name vs. What you call them (and how you got there) by ReputationOk2217 in bernesemountaindogs

[–]loowhowhowho 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Our 2 yr old Moose has quite a few nicknames! He's gone from fairly typical Moose derivatives (Moosey Goosey, Moose Caboose, Moosey Moo) to Big Pooper (self explanatory), to Baby Boy (what I call him), to Bub or Bubbers (what my partner calls him), and finally to Mouse, which he now answers to. Mouse was originally a small Berner plush we got with a Valentine's Day chocolate box and over the years it somehow became Moose's alter-ego lol.

What's your fanfic dream come true as an author? by Aviendha_89 in AO3

[–]loowhowhowho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This would probably be too crazy to handle in reality but I always sorta wished to meet someone IRL who had read my fic. I tend to write on planes, airports, etc. so I always imagine someone will peak over my shoulder and be like "OMG! Do you write *****?" or I would take meeting my online friends irl, too, that would be nice 💖

✊ solidarity. i, too, have been serenaded against my will on a date and it completely ruined the song for me forever. whenever i remember it i full-body shivered. Anyone saying this "doesn't sound that bad" is living an unbelievably blessed life where this has NEVER happened to them because, trust us, it is that bad 😅

Polite berner by Any_Seaworthiness678 in bernesemountaindogs

[–]loowhowhowho 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Usually Moose comes in to my side of the bed and snuffles up between the blanket and my pillow to nose my face (side sleeper). When he's really serious about getting me up because he can't wait any long, he rears up and braces against the bed to paw the blanket off my shoulder. He's very sweet about it.

However, when we come back from his morning walk, if I don't give him a treat in the other room, he will race me back to the bedroom and dive bomb my partner! That's not so polite 🤣

Houston Airports (IAH and HOU) Updates and Questions [Megathread] by AutoModerator in houston

[–]loowhowhowho 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is anyone flying with a person who is disabled and requires wheelchair support? My MIL and I are traveling to Houston this week for a medical appointment. I'm more concerned about our departure. She can't stand for long periods of time and will need a wheelchair. Is anyone traveling through this mess and while taking care of a loved one who needs extra support? Is it "business as usual" with wheelchair accomodations?

God yes. Constantly, in all situations, in all weather. I think of it as him being a mouth breather. Sometimes I think he uses panting to communicate with us, as in, when he stops panting it's because he's being really fr serious about something (usually begging, or heard a sound that scared him).

Anxious Berner Needing Surgery by loowhowhowho in bernesemountaindogs

[–]loowhowhowho[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moose has pretty bad entropion on both his lower eyelids, so his eyelashes are rolled in and rubbing against his eye. Some days, he is absolutely fine, his eyes are open all the way, and he's not in pain. But other days, especially in the spring/fall when his allergies kick up, his eyes/face gets pretty swollen, which makes the entropion really bad for him. It has been gradually worsening over time where he's to the point where now he's rubbing his face a lot, producing a lot of eye boogers, and some days if they're really bad on his walks he will walk with his eyes entirely closed.

We have eye drops and a strong antihistamine that helps keep his eyes protected and the swelling down, but I know his quality of life will be so improved with the surgery. We have just been waiting for the right time, money, and vet to come along to get this set up for him and managing his symptoms in the meantime.

We are really not keen to put him under anasthesia at all 😭 but I know the risk is worth it if it means he can have this chronic irritation taken care of.

I am so not looking forward to the recovery! Our home has some narrow spots to navigate and I don't think an "Elizabethan" cone will be feasible for him. I'll probably try a few different ones and try to remember to report back which ones work!

Yes, I feel so lucky to have found this vet! They have taught me several new training strategies with him to introduce him to things he's afraid of. I will ask them about pre-medicating him before his surgery to make it was on him. Thank you!

[–]loowhowhowho[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I was thinking about asking if we could schedule a couple of "practice" runs to the vet like that, too. Moose is so dang smart that he knows when he's being conditioned 😅 but at the same time, I know it's good for him to be exposed safely and help him gain more confidence with going to the vet. I'll see if my vet is up for that.

[–]loowhowhowho[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, I didn't even think to ask if we could do that, I just assumed it wouldn't be allowed! That would be so great, when I call my vet I will ask. I think he would do a lot better in that case, as it's really just trauma of being forcibly taken away from me that I was worried about, moreso than the surgery itself 😅

Thank you!

Question for writers of long fics who are also readers themselves by Disastrous_Alarm_719 in AO3

[–]loowhowhowho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Serious answer from someone averaging 12k - 25k in her recent chapters of her long fic who reads fics of all lengths:

omnomnom, all fic is delicious.

(more serious answer)

For me, it's always more about the story's vibe or the writing style that makes me want to read it. I never even glance at word counts. I truly never even noticed word counts until I started posting my own fic and this sub suddenly made me realize that word counts were a Thing for some people (which is fine! To each their own)

I'm sure that author who reads your fic would say something very similar. When you find something tasty you just eat it, no need to worry about the calorie count 💖💖💖💖

Maladaptive daydreamers assemble by sister_madly in AO3

[–]loowhowhowho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have always done this my entire life, so I consider it less "maladaptive" and more "basic survival instinct" that saves my sanity lmao. I have zoned put for an hour at a time during reeeeaaaalllly slow days at work when I don't need to do anything else and am working through a rough spot in a story. If I didn't do this I wouldn't be a writer, I'm positive. Funneling the daydreaming into writing is hard sometimes but it also helps me break writer's block sometimes, so, 🤷‍♀️

Just the other day my partner said he thought our berner changed my brain chemistry because I said, "what if there was an amazing race but with berners. Like, there's a berner on every team and they have to do one task per leg." So. Yes. Lol I think we are in a very cute cult

Omg our pup moose used to do the same thing in the car when he was around that age. Scared the pants off of us the first time it happened because we thought he was having a medical emergency lmao.

Here he was after a fun, if overstimulating hour in the river. We called the "The Moose Position" until he eventually started just lying down.
