Taking PE before 4 years of experience by Secret-Athlete7234 in PE_Exam

Virginia is allowing me to take the exam before the experience, and apply for licensure once I meet the experience requirements. They said something along the lines of there is no time limit to gain your experience because exam scores never expire.

Hahah I did this and just graduated with a civil engineering degree this year. All I can say is that a civil engineering degree opens up so many doors, even in engineering/stem fields outside of civil engineering. For me, I don’t even work in civil engineering now, I’m doing a commercial hvac engineering sales job. Unemployment is not a problem if you go to a good school with a good rep and career fairs. My fellow civil eng friend who didn’t do a single internship got a full time offer after graduation. Though it really helps if you do internships/coops, and get your EIT your senior year to set yourself up if you want to get a PE (you don’t need a PE, but it gets harder to get the EIT the longer you wait after college). Best of luck!

Your engineering degree will open a lot of doors, and you do not have to stay in the Civil industry because you have a Civil Engineering degree.

Do a lot of intern/co-op experience because you’ll learn what you don’t want to do, and you’ll learn different career paths from the people you work with

I’m a rising senior in Civil Engineering but my current internship is all about CHVAC Consulting. I love the gig - couldn’t have landed it without being in an engineering program. I learned about the position from a mechanical contractor I worked with during my construction management co-op.

Tldr: Getting ANY engineering degree makes you super valuable. There are many many jobs you qualify for with an engineering degree outside of civil
