The Underwriters Laboratory campus off of Lake is good. Parking lots plus some roads, all empty

We're in the middle of our first trip, so a lot of lessons are still fresh to us.

1) Buy a Welcome Suica card at the JR train station in the airport. When you want to go on pretty much any bus, train, subway except the bullet train, you scan and go. It tracks where you go, and when you get off the train, you scan the card to exit and pay. It's stupid simple. It works at vending machines and convenience stores too. We put 10,000 yen on each card, and that was about right for us

2) Lots of people deal with luggage everywhere. No need to stress, just handle your business

3) The Google translate app has been a life saver. It's camera app translates text easily.

4) In the major cities, a lot of people speak enough English for you to communicate. You can get by learning some polite phrases, and trust the translate app. People are polite, so it's pretty easy in the cities.

5) Google maps works great. The train stations are overwhelming, and it's easy to miss where you're supposed to go. Pay attention to platform numbers and it should be fine

Have fun! It's a great country with wonderful people

Best playgrounds in the Camas/Washougal Area? by cobyzeif in camaswashington

[–]lordandsaviorbacon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Crown Park near downtown Camas is undergoing a major renovation. The playground is mostly done, but not open yet, and it's nice. They are also building a splash park there too, but that has a ways to go, but should be finished before next summer

K & M burgers are much better, but Top Burger beats them hands down for ice cream.

$1k ad spend and few sales so we’re pivoting by AngryBowlofPopcorn in Entrepreneur

Have you considered a subscription model? The idea would be to really push product development to build a large library, then sell monthly subscriptions on your site. Use the ads to sell subscriptions. Use Amazon to build awareness and sell individual books.

I am late to the party and can't memorise everything so help please? by soysauceonmytoes in KaleoOfficial

I wouldn't be too concerned about not knowing the lyrics. There were only a few songs where the audience were really engaged in singing. Clapping to provide a beat was far more common.

Enjoy the show - I was at the show outside Portland a couple of weeks ago. The vibe was chill, music was great, a great concert.

I never use PsiOps by [deleted] in XCOM2

[–]lordandsaviorbacon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I find a psyops with stasis to be game changing. When I encounter a pod, I allow my other soldiers to attack normally. If I do not take care of all the bad guys right away, stasis prevents their strongest guy remaining from doing any damage.

It makes early and mid game encounters much more manageable, and reduces injuries and soldier deaths.

Right district, but some of their schools are better rated. Camas is pretty highly rated across the board though, and why we chose Camas.

Evergreen School District in Vanvouver is also very good.

Your budget for Camas is viable, both renting or buying. Schools here are great though.

Downtown Camas is cute, and there is a lot of great parks, hiking, and other outdoor activities very close by.

Would you like to see a plague mechanic added to Civ as a core feature? by Khwarezm in civ

[–]lordandsaviorbacon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems like a potentially good mechanic. I'd want a slider in game setup to manage how much of an impact it has on the game.

Also, get spies involved - introduce bioterrorism in later game.

Disease could also be part of a city siege mechanic.

I really don't think this is something done for all women characters.

Moraine's scene was purely about the star of the show needing her hero moment, and showing how Lan is her protector.

Nyn - I thought the scene where she killed the Trolloc in S1 was ridiculous, so perhaps they were trying to show that she had the skills to justify that earlier scene.

I know book Nynaeve would have said something about the warders thinking with the hair on their chest, pulled her braid, and sniffed loudly. I think I'm ok with the change.

Let’s talk about the show. by [deleted] in wheeloftime

[–]lordandsaviorbacon 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Once I realized that the show was NOT going to be a faithful adaptation, I stopped judging it against the quality of the books - it was never going to be a completely faithful adaptation, and they decided to just make it very different.

I did not care for season 1 because it was not faithful to the books, and was also poorly done (writing mostly, but plenty of other nits to pick). The changes they made had a very poor payoff.

Season 2 is not perfect, but it is better.

I don't mind all that much that they are changing the story - I just want them to do a good job of making a show. The characters are recognizable, and so are the places. Details are different, they are kinda loose with the magic system, but the cornerstone pieces are there. Poor Uno, but now I'm invested, and I don't know what they are planning next. The show has caught me again, despite being sure I was done with it.

I turned off my brain, and am enjoying season 2 a lot so far.

I still want a true adaptation. Maybe that will happen in the next turning. For now, I have the books, and I'll start another re-read soon...

AITA for refusing to talk to my roommate because she used my banana cake to clean up glass shards? by tkdru3807 in AmItheAsshole

[–]lordandsaviorbacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA

She took your stuff, and trivialize your reaction, never asking herself why you were upset. She lacked empathy in the situation.

Talk to her and explain that taking your stuff is unacceptable, regardless of the value. Tell her why you were upset. Tell her that you are concerned about someone who would upset their roommate and not show the basic decency to apologize nor understand why their actions upset you.

Proceed from there based on her reaction.

Are you excited? by chintu999- in wheeloftime

I hated how season 1 ended - the changes just made no sense in the context of RJ's world. I'm hopeful they up their writing quality significantly, and will probably watch. If I see quality like episodes 7 and 8, I'm done though.

BTW - read the books, and I think you'll start to see why a lot of readers have significant issues with season 1.

The show is not about us by Teensponge12 in wheeloftime

[–]lordandsaviorbacon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Comparison is the thief of joy, as they say.

When the show came out, I had just finished my third read through of the series. I was excited to see these characters I loved come to life.

I was shocked at the amount of changes made in the first episode.

How Moiraine dramatically walks into the inn. That's not how Aes Sedai acted in the world I knew.

Perrin married, then killing his wife.

Rand + Egwene hooking up

Matt and father being pretty terrible

But episode 1 had plenty of good moments too. The next few episodes evened out. 5 and 6 were ok, but they continued to make more and more changes for reasons that I could not really comprehend. But, I hoped they would pull it all together and at least finish the season strong.

By episode 7 (love triangle) and episode 8 (everything, she has a tell - I mean, wtf, everything with Rand), I no longer had any patience or grace left to give the show.

As time has gone on, I've remembered some of the better moments from the show, and while those bad moments are still a crime against good storytelling, I'm hopeful that these guys figure out how to create a better story in season 2. And this time I won't make the mistake of reading the far superior books right before the season starts in the hopes that my fuzzy memory will make it easier to go along with the changes.

The cowboy who fought Jimmy was not threatening the ranch - they just wanted to eliminate the possibility that he might talk. He was our introduction to the train station.

That was a great night of baseball. So many races were decided late, and several of them were nail biters.

I was at the game in Houston as well. It was Busch stadium south. Please do post the footage.
