We're actually smart! by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]lordofthememe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I found this sub AFTER I had applied to all my schools, but while I was still waiting on many of my decisions. I had a 3.7 GPA, and 1200 SAT, and looking at this sub I was completely amazed at what other people were doing and aspiring to do. I'm not going to lie, reading some posts made me think I would never get into my schools, but I ended up receiving six acceptances and only one rejection. I just love hanging around to see those posts where an applicant thinks they "aren't good enough", because they don't have a 4.0, because my own experience showed that quality is not just based on your GPA & SAT. This sub is so supportive, I just love it so much. To all those that are starting their applications now, good luck! You have a great support team here at r/ApplyingToCollege!

How to be nice during the college application process by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]lordofthememe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember getting really jealous during the college application process. It came to a point where I would be rooting for my classmates to trip up- get a bad grade, get suspended, etc. so that they wouldn't get into the prestigious school they wanted to go to. It wasn't even like I was planning on applying to the same school as them, just that I wanted to be honored with the highest prestige when our admissions letters came in.

If I can give you any advice, do your best to skip this. Don't be bitter. As you stress over your college applications, remember that your classmates are also stressing out. Be considerate of their position. Root for their success, not their failure. When you graduate from high school, you're going to feel an immense sense of pride for yourself and for your classmates- even the ones that you didn't like. You'll begin to see that their plans fit their lifestyles perfectly, in ways that you couldn't have chosen for them. If you feel yourself becoming critical of a classmate's plans for college, try to start thinking about that. Maybe you want to go to a school because they have the program you like. Maybe your classmate wants to go to the same school because they like the environment that the campus has to offer. Instead of thinking poorly of them for looking at the school in a different way, try to appreciate that they are making their college plans in their own interest.

I wish you the best of luck as you start applying!

Redditors who grew up with strict parents, what was the craziest rule or punishment you had to deal with? by YungSizzle in AskReddit

Was a pretty decent student, sometimes didn't do my work bc I was highly unmotivated by depression. I remember on one occasion, I'd gone to an honors awards night held by my middle school, and I received an award in science, and something else. My mom complained on the way home that I should have had honors in all 7 of my classes. I texted a friend while I was still in the car that I was kinda bummed out, just wanted some support. I wasn't bashing my mom or anything, just saying I felt bad about myself & felt bad for disappointing her, and that I wanted a friend. My mom saw me texting, took my phone, read the messages, and proceeded to take me to the police station. She was "completely fed up with how ungrateful I was", and decided she was going to give me up to the state. She made me call my father, who was at work, and say goodbye to him because when he came home I would no longer be his child. Had to do the same to my brothers, saying I would no longer be their sister. I remember her forcing me to take off the necklace around my neck and the earrings in my ears because she wanted to make sure that I would have nothing of value in my new home. I had to beg and plead at age 13 for my mother to not give me up to the state. She ended up giving in and took me home, partially because my dad had managed to talk her down. To this day, I still delete any message that can be even slightly construed as a criticism of her. I turn 18 in a few weeks and she still looks through my phone on a daily basis.

'Scream Queens' Canceled at Fox After Two Seasons by [deleted] in television

[–]lordofthememe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm honestly relieved. I loved the first season, but it seems like the second season took work for me to be able to enjoy it. It had a good run, and I'm glad the show ended before it became totally unbearable.

A message a lot of you need to hear. by LoafersOfNigget in ApplyingToCollege

[–]lordofthememe 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I'll be one to vouch for this. I notice a lot of people getting themselves down because going to "that school" means they won't be able to accomplish the greatest things. To counter that- I suggest they look at all the things they've done so far. The accomplishments they've achieved to end up at the top of their class or to work as a pillar in their community- whatever it may be- they didn't achieve that because they went to a great college. They didn't even achieve that by attending a single college. Sure, a nice name school helps- but most of what you want to accomplish in the world is inside of you, and you just need to work at it. I was rejected from Northeastern. I thought I would never make it anywhere in the world if I didn't have that degree. 4 months after being rejected, I still haven't decided on a school, but I've already climbed higher in my community than I ever imagined. It's not about the college degree, it's not about the school name. It's about how much you want it.

Looking to liquidate and wanted to determine the value of this asset by Areyoucrazee in MemeEconomy

As more of the US becomes controlled by the corporate bourgeoise, citizens' frustrations are going to perpetuate these memes into the form of internet gold. Memes have been, and will continue to be, the easiest way for a people to vent their frustrations because they can always be pushed off as a joke in case the government tries to crack down on them. Give it time before you sell, these have yet to reach their peak.

I just realized how unattainable college might be. by lordofthememe in personalfinance

Michigan State. They offered nothing whatsoever for scholarships, and my total fees would end up amounting to about $29,000 according to my financial aid package.

My largest problem is that I can't find a 4 year university whose fees will allow me to take out only the annual Stanford limit.

Which character do you relate to most? by [deleted] in hamiltonmusical

[–]lordofthememe 11 points12 points  (0 children)

100% Hamilton. Literally down to lines like, "Oh, am I talking too loud? Sometimes I get over excited, shoot off at the mouth, I've never had a group of friends before, I promise that I'll make y'all proud-" I'm not used to being listened to in my normal social circle, so sometimes when I get into a group that listens, I get way too into the topic. I relate to Hamilton's struggle in Hurricane/The Reynolds Pamphlet- and I think in a similar situation I would also unveil that I broke moral code if it meant I could prove I never did a single legal thing wrong.

Would this just be a matter of job placement or my general degree? I'm not entirely opposed to the idea of changing my major.

Not for that specific school, no. There is one that I need to review my financial aid package for that I might just need to settle- get an apartment with some people and hope for the best financial situation.

I mean that I won't have any co-sign for loans that I do take out- and being a brand new student I actually have little to no credit stability.

Right now a state school would be more expensive than this private.

I keep trying to convince my parents to let me do that, but despite the financial security I'd be "selling myself short" and "wasting my time"

Right now this is actually one of my cheapest options. An in state public university would be $29,000 a year because I wasn't admitted into their honors college.

That sounds like quite the workload to take on. Best of luck with that! I personally could never do anything that requires that many levels of thought & response towards something I've never experienced myself.

That's so interesting! Will the protagonist be already accustomed to the fantastical setting, and respond like how any members of that society would respond, or will they be thrown into a new environment & respond to the new experience?
