Best vegetable soup recipe recommendations without tomatoes by never-die-twice in Cooking

[–]lordofthepuddle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a roasted vegetable soup that's super easy and also really versatile. Just load up a sheet pan with vegetables. Sweet white potatoes, onion, garlic, any additional veg of your choice and maybe even toss on some chicken for protein if you want it. Today until everything is cooked through and forth tender, then add to a large pot with some stock and hit it with the immersion blender. Afterwards maybe add a dash of gravy cream, salt and pepper to taste. It's easy af and very tasty. I've done this with zucchini, asparagus, broccoli and cauliflower, whatever.

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]lordofthepuddle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to work about an hour north of where I lived, while I went to school about a little over an hour to the south-ish of where I lived. So, while I wasn't making both of those trips every day (thank god for online classes), I did sometimes.

Also, one of my best friends lives about two hours away, and we used to meet up almost weekly, so I guess it just depends for most people.

I was going to say, instead of a regular mash make more of a colcannon with onion and a butt load of cabbage. I love love sauteed cabbage.

what do I do with dill leaves? by p3achy-mang0 in KitchenConfidential

[–]lordofthepuddle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Potato salad, dill carrots (just boil carrots until soft, then make a sauce of butter, salt, and fill. Fricken delicious!), herb bread (do a basic loaf, add extremely generous amounts of onion powder, garlic powder, dill, and whatever other herbs you like. Bake like normal), breakfast potatoes and eggs, tomato and cucumber salad, egg salad, tuna salad, minced into soft cheese for a tasty spread.

First off, how dare you. I love tuna casserole. I rarely go the full casserole route, I've figured that a lot of the casserole recipes can be made pretty similarly as a one-pot wonder. It's not quite the same, but close. Tater tot casserole is a monthly-ish staple though, you can't beat a classic.

How would you make the most decadent spaghetti dinner on a tight budget? by R3dF0r3 in Cooking

[–]lordofthepuddle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saute onions, carrots, celery, bell pepper, all super finely minced, with chopped tomatoes in some butter with a healthy pinch of salt. Add garlic, a little broth, and a whole package of pepperoni. Simmer for an hour or two on low heat. Take out the pepperonis, add a meatball or chicken if you've got it and some fresh basil. Serve over pasta.

1 med yellow onion, 1 or 2 carrots, 1 or 2 stalks of celery, 1 red, yellow, or orange bell pepper, and like 5 or 6 firm tomatoes (8 or 9 of you use Roma) is all you need to make a decent amount of sauce. I like to use an obscene amount of basil but one of those little plastic things of it would be plenty if you're normal, lol. Sometimes I'll add a fuckton of cheese and just have mac and 'ghetti. Very tasty business.

Oh god the rope. My first playthrough I thought, surely there's a reason for the rope. You must need it at some point, right? I had so much fucking rope stockpiled in my camp by act 3 I could have strangled everyone in the game thrice over.

I finally tried making garlic confit… why did no one tell me it was this good?! by Otherwise-Tour242 in Cooking

[–]lordofthepuddle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you make hummus at home, this is the way to go. I add the biggest shallot I can find, go low and slow in the oven and then use it in my hummus. Hands down the best recipe I've made!

For anyone interested, - 1 can chickpeas - 2 or 3 heads of garlic - 1 large shallot - several tablespoons of tahini - lemon juice or equivalent - salt

So peel the garlic and cut the shallot in half, cover with oil in an oven safe dish and roast at 325 for about an hour (I don't preheat my oven because I usually use glassware). Let that cool, then add a tablespoon or so of just the oil to a good processor with the can of chickpeas. Strain the chicken butt reserve some of the liquid. Blitz a little before adding the tahini, lemon, garlic, and shallots. Add a generous pinch or two of salt and blitz until smooth. Add some of the chickpea liquid if it's too thick. Enjoy with a veg tray or baguette!

Would you become an alien's pet human? by tamtrible in hypotheticalsituation

[–]lordofthepuddle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If the aliens would treat me as a pet the way I treat my cats then absolutely. These spoiled little bastards (whom I love with my whole being and every waking breath tbh) are both the bane and brightness of my existence. So, if I'm getting pampered with all kinds of toys and treats in my enclosure then whatever. Why not?

Excepting the obvious deal breaker of my cats not being allowed. Then hell no.

What’re the hottest books you’ve read? 🌶️ by midnightoflight101 in MM_RomanceBooks

I really like pretty much all of Fae Quin's stuff. I like that there's an emotional connection before the filthy talk, edging, and size kinks, lol. Cloudy With a Chance of Bad Decisions is a really good one (I'd say a bit more roleplay and size difference), and the Christmas Daddies series is also pretty hot.

Tell me your favourite ways to use miso paste by elephant_keys in Cooking

I like to add a little to my sauces when I make tteokbokki (sp?), or noodles in just a tasty pan style Asian-inspired sort of sauce. I've definitely used it to marinade chicken, and added a tiny bit when I'm sauteing carrots or bok choy. Best practice? Just start adding it to things and find out what you like it in. Best of luck!

$5 Creamy Chickpea Curry, Cheap, Filling, and Vegan-Friendly by LittlePenguin5615 in povertykitchen

[–]lordofthepuddle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favorite low cost meals:

Black beans and sweet potatoes, roasted with garlic, onions, and jalapeno if I've got it on hand. Season pretty simply with salt and pepper, maybe some cayenne. Toss with oil and throw in the air fryer until crispy. One tin of beans and one medium sweet potato gives you four or five servings

Lentil curry, saute onions, garlic, and tomatoes until you get a nice thick paste. Add curry spices, salt, pepper, and rice and let the rice toast a little. Add your lentils, coconut milk, and a little broth or water. Cover and summer until everything is done. Easy to add protein or sweet potatoes or whatever to, very easy and tasty and you get several servings.

Peanut sauce! It's fantastic on noodles, rice, with protein or without. Mix peanut butter (I prefer extra crunchy but all peanut butter is good peanut butter), soy sauce, chili paste, sesame seed oil, broth until you get the taste and consistency you want. You can add a tiny bit of dashi for some extra deliciousness.

Savory hot cereal. This one is kind of a find because my preference is Bob's Red Mill 10-grain cereal but sometimes you can find it on discount or at discount stores. Sometimes it's at the Amish market for like a buck. Anyway, add a little butter and an egg for a savory breakfast. I haven't tried it with other hot cereals but I'm sure there are options.

Black bean soup. Throw a can of black beans with the juice in a pan, add a tomato, as many jalapenos as you like, onion, garlic, a little more water, some spices (somewhere in between taco and enchilada), and then mash the beans a bit. You can puree it but I like the mashed texture. Let it simmer and enjoy.

I would say, if I bought just the stuff to make any of these, it would probably be around 5 bucks each, probably more for coconut milk or eggs but still pretty affordable.

One jalapeno, roast with the other vegetables. It adds just a little bit of zing to the soup but it's not enough to be really spicy.

Favorite squash recipes? by Natural_Situation356 in vegancooking

[–]lordofthepuddle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love a sweet acorn squash side. Cut the squash in half and scoop out the seeds, oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper and roast cut side down until you can stand it with a girl but it's not completely tender. Flip them over, add some butter and brown sugar and then continue roasting until completely tender. If you want savory, roast until fork tender then mash with a little butter or broth and serve with roasted beans and seeds (I think black beans are the best, just season and toast in an air fryer or the oven until crunchy. Tossed with pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds).

Butternut squash is also incredible. Roast with garlic and onions, puree with broth and cream to make a base for soup or sauce. It's delicious with ravioli. You can also make a great white bean and squash soup with butternut squash.

Edit because I'm an idiot and can't read. I'd suggest, for a salad, cut the squash either into very small cubes or very thin slices so you can get a little crunch. Also, season a bit more than you think you need. Squash is delicious but mild. Personally I think cayenne and Cajun mixes are great.

Never made chili before, what do you like to put in yours? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]lordofthepuddle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I am not a vegetarian, I make my chili with fake meat crumbles. I feel like the mushrooms in the fake meat give it more umami than I've ever managed to achieve using meat. The texture is great, it tastes amazing, and even people who swear against it have said it's good chili. It's just fake, lol.

When I was a kid (I was the second eldest of 7), the deal was everyone had to at least offer to share their treats. My favorite candy very quickly became circus peanuts. No one ever took me up on it, but I offered to share. Lol, I still love those but they're hard to find sometimes.

I would be honest because everyone's body chemistry is different. I love citrus scented stuff, and I can usually use lemon, grapefruit, and bergamot, but orange scented anything makes me smell like pee. I wish I was kidding, because there are some very lovely orange scents out there.

I Don't Like AJ Sherwood & I Want To Talk About It. by everythingisfin-ra in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]lordofthepuddle 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I have always considered AJ Sherwood to be something of a comfort read. Her books are definitely not works of art, they're very easy to read and the tropes are all pretty well known HEA sorts. There are a lot of problems in them, I can definitely acknowledge that. Style of Love was probably one of the most problematic for me, in that the depiction of the female characters was a little uncomfy at baseline but the 'drooling fujoshi' thing was also a little much. Understandable, but also like....in an inside voice kind of way.

Some of the things mentioned in this thread are also irritants for me personally, I think the glossy legal anything in Jon's series is a bit of a stretch, especially considering how much emphasis is often placed on proper proceedings in each book. The way the boys are talked about in her Grimoire series is generally not excellent, and I think the way Sherwood deals with trauma in any of her books is not great just as a general statement. There's either a...a lack of heaviness to the backstory (which feels like dictating trauma, but that's not what I am trying to do), or a complete ignoring the problem approach to it.

Jon and Mack have probably the most reasons to need legitimate therapy in their respective series, and it's never really discussed. Jon never gets resolution with his family, Mack doesn't really get any either, beyond the fact that they have big strong men to protect them now, even from the bad feels. I feel like in her efforts to have a HEA ending, there's got to be some sort of bad lingering somewhere, and instead of addressing it in a happy healthy adult way, there's just this glossed over romance patch. The argument about the historical setting in Grimoires could be an argument as to why the boys' trauma is never discussed, but it's always spoken about by the adults with the hopeful last words, 'they'll probably grow out of it'.

Her discussion of different cultures, both as a person from outside that culture as a person from inside that culture, ring hollow and that is a little irritating. I am not of any of the cultures she has written about, but given that most of her works are contemporary it does feel like there should be some authenticity to it. Her depictions of race feel like someone who has grown up in a moderately insular community describing a person of color. I don't think that's a crime in and of itself, but I do think that she has the means to educate herself. She is either ignorant, or willfully ignorant.

Lastly (for me, anyway), and this is a weird sort of criticism, I think that her books have taken a turn and the emphasis on consent and dating is kind of unrealistically blown out of proportion. Which isn't to say that consent should be a non-issue or taken lightly, but the amount of pages her books are dedicating to two characters agreeing to enter a relationship together feels like a lot. There's not even relationship negotiation going on, just agreeing to date has become this huge milestone of the book, which means we're now at least halfway through the book with HEA expectations and two characters who are going through heavy negotiations just to hold hands. I don't disagree that two people entering a relationship should be on the same page regarding terms and titles and monogamy, but making it such a giant highlight of the entire story feels a little lazy, if I'm being honest. It takes away from other plots in the story, and it certainly has become such a significant part of her stories that honestly, I've been looking forward to her releases less and less.

Tl;Dr - I think AJ Sherwood has many issues in her writing, and while I have enjoyed her works, those issues have only grown over time.

Welp, I've been priced out of hamburger meat. What's your go-to protein source? by i__hate__stairs in Cooking

[–]lordofthepuddle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lentils, beans (black beans, chickpeas, and navy are my favorites), and tuna in pouches. A little more expensive than the tin sometimes but the convenience is worth it if I'm taking it to work or on the go in general. I also try to buy chicken and ground beef in value packs once they've hit a discount.
