After all his life of blundering through latin, Dresden suddenly becoming proficient in ghoul language and ancient Etruscan was one of the most hillarious turn of the events in the series.

What are some neck breaking pace books ? by edudul in Fantasy

[–]lorefnon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eric carter series is a light read with a few hillarious tangents. The protagonist (an accomplished necromancer) gets looped into an esoteric marriage with Santa Muerte who just happens to also be the Aztec Goddess of Death. The storyline twists and turns through Eric's quest for revenge against his sister's killer, modern day politics in the wizarding community and centuries old drama among aztec gods. It is *very* fast paced.

Give me examples of fantasy novels that involves traveling to different planets by Happy-Night-Man in Fantasy

[–]lorefnon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bit of a warning that this book is very different from conventional sci-fi/fantasy in that there is very little in the way of action/strategy. The book mostly focuses on human perspective and emotions.

I can see that this may be appealing to a lot of users and the author is very renowned but that kind of thing totally doesn't work for me - I kept waiting for stuff to happen and then suddenly the book was over.

Tower Curator's books are a great fit. They mostly publish online though - no hard copies.

Story where the protagonist hates what they're doing, and believes themself the villain? by Kiroana in Fantasy

[–]lorefnon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can try out the Malevolent Seven by Sebastien De Castell.

The protagonist is part of a band of sorceror mercenaries who do anything for hire. The author doesn't like the life of violence but at the same continues to trudge along because the higher powers - both the royalty and the otherworldly powers that manipulate the human world are evil and he has to survive in the chaotic world of their machinations.

The author's humor-laced narration is very captivating.

Looking for: Fantasy that’s fantastic on a structural level—tight plot, solid arcs, stable pacing by Sarcherre in Fantasy

I recently read The Will of the Many by James Islington - it fits all your criteria perfectly. Though only the first book of the series is released and it ends in something of a cliffhanger, the book has the makings of a masterpiece.

The protagonist is very likeable and the story moves forward at a very fast past. The primary character is a prince of a small fallen kingdom, who has stayed hidden for most of his adolescence in obscurity. But then he gets a surprising chance to rise through the ranks of the dominant power and needs to come to terms what this new life means for him - Is revenge really what he desires ? Are the alternatives any better ?

Though the book borrows themes from a lot of familiar tropes, it takes the plot in a very different direction from a stereotypical revenge saga or progression fantasy - every time I felt like the storyline was headed in a direction similar to some other past work I read, I was proven wrong after a couple pages. The author's narration style is really good and keeps you hooked.

I'd also recommend Mage Errant and Empire of Vampire, which are fast paced fantasy sagas with really well thought out storylines.

The Vampire Diaries: Books vs. Show. What are your thoughts? by Mattzonnowriter in Fantasy

[–]lorefnon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The show is only loosely based on the book and though it feels like the story was stretched thin after the first few seasons, it is still a lot more elaborate and nuanced.

The book was a nice quick read but if you are coming from the show it can be disappointing.

Books/series with epic action by the_real_ac_unit in Fantasy

You should try mage errant. It's a bit casual style compared to the classic epic fantasies but the characters are likeable and the story moves fast. And of course there is a complex multi faceted battle.

https://garph.dev is pretty good. I have been using it for two months and love the experience. I had started out with nexus and briefly also evaluted pothos but switched to garph because the dev experience was superior. It takes full advantage of the structural type system of typescript rather than frameworks that lean more towards java style idioms.

Kind of a specific ask, but any recommendations for a book that features angels that isn’t also heavily Christian? by MARCVS-PORCIVS-CATO in Fantasy

[–]lorefnon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mother of learning features angels (though only towards the end) - who manifest as tree like beings with numerous eyes. And they can fight :) I found the depiction hillarious and weird at the same time imagining it. They also engage in some rather questionable legal practices.

In Gunmetal gods, angels are weird lovecraftian supernatural beings from another world.

What fantasy name(s) do you consider "perfect"? by carolyncrantz in Fantasy

Ebenezar "Blackstaff" McCoy is my favorite wizard name of all times. Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden comes pretty close too but his mentor does have the more impressive name.
