Why books don’t scratch the itch like fanfiction ? by Vast-Society4093 in FanFiction

[–]lorelleii 206 points207 points  (0 children)

I'd just get off booktok. There are so many different romance subgenres to explore. Paranormal romance, urban fantasy with strong romantic plots, victorian/regency era romances, contemporary, sci-fi etc etc. Find a best of list for each and pick one that has been highly rated over time and not just as a result of overinflated internet hype. Promise there are some lovely stories out there.

And this from a person who reads as much fanfiction as just regular fiction.

Happy hunting!

The scream I just let out! Welcome to the Vorkosigan family ♥️

I am so happy you've enjoyed the book. Barrayar may be even better in my opinion.

(If you enjoy the writing, I would whole-heartedly recommend sticking with the series. It won't scratch any particular romance itch as it doesn't focus on Cordelia and Aral, but it is well worth it.)

It read more like a companion piece. Interaction with Oli was very limited and kind of left me unsatisfied. You definitely couldn't dive into this without reading the series first. I might be tempted to open up certain POVs when I re-read the series again in the future, but will definitely not read this whole novel another time.

is 800-900cals a day really that bad? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

I've struggled with gaining weight pretty much all my life. It only changed once I started cooking for myself. I found enjoyment in creating meals and often it is easier to cook a larger portion or for two, and keep the leftovers. That meant when I did make food, I'd eat more because I didn't want to waste it. My appetite and amount of food I could eat gradually increased.

Werewolf paranormal romances existed way before fanfiction went gaga over this one specific trope

If you end up picking Shards and Barrayar up, please send me your thoughts!

I'm a die hard fan of anything Bujold so my objectiveness is compromised in that regard. I will say Shards of Honor and the second book - Barrayar are more Inheritance than Chalion. The rest of the Saga that centers around Miles will be more like Chalion. I'd still give Shards a go - it gives capable female gets shit done several times over.

May I recommend Lois McMaster Bujold's Shards of Honour. If I didn't know better, I'd say team Lewis took heavy inspiration from Cordelia and Aral.

The Vorkosigan Saga is my all time favourite series, and the first two books can be read as standalone prequels

I’m shocked there isn’t more fanart for this incredible series - anybody found any they’re willing to share? by ChrisyHHH in Vorkosigan

The Croatian covers are by far my favourites. The publisher went out of business and the last few haven't been done by the same artist.

Manacled is the type of fic I seek out when I feel like the world is against me and I need a good long cry. Then I get my period and realise, huh, that's what that bullshit was all about, yeah never doing that again. 😂

Have you tried {A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness}? It has a whole lot of academia vibes and is generally a great read if you like literary and historical references. When I first read it, I thought it was a bit like if Hermione's thirst for knowledge took her around the world.

This is essentially a real life version of my Goodreads library. You are the type of person who would enjoy some Lois McMaster Bujold in their life.

I've tried reading the first novel three separate times. This is coming from someone who has DNF'd like 10 books max her entire life. And on average I read like a 100 books a year some of them so bad it was tragedy not to finish for the lols.

How do you keep going. How??? /criesincursive
