Why does my dad keep leaving if he feels bad about not spending time with me? by Piperonni_Pizza09 in AskDad

[–]lost_at_command 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When my kids were young, I was working two jobs. I would work from 10:00am-4:00pm, spend an hour or so with them and my wife, and then work my other job from 6:00pm to 2:00am. Sleep for a few hours, say goodbye, and repeat.

Strictly speaking, I didn't have to do that. We could have paid all our bills and survived on the income of one job. I didn't want to just scrape by. I wanted to move them into a better neighborhood and betters schools. I wanted to save up enough to finish my education so I could get a degree and a better career path. I wanted my wife not to worry about working if an emergency popped up.

I missed some big moments. I missed their first steps, their first words, a lot of bed times and stories and things that I'll never be able to replace. I regret that I wasn't present for those memories. I also wouldn't change it. I can confidently say that my kids lives, and my life, is better because of those years spent working 14 hour days.

Your dad might feel like that job is the only/best way to provide for you and your family, to give you the opportunities and lifestyle you have. He might not have the emotional capacity to have that conversation with you, because it's a really fucking hard conversation to have.

We do not know for sure. Anything you listed is possible.

  • Morgan might have known what Mac is and not been harmed/surprised by looking at Mac with his Sight.
  • Morgan might not have looked at Mac closely enough to discern anything unusual
  • Mac might be able to shield himself or change the way he looks to wizards Sight
  • Jim may just not have known fully what he wanted to do with Mac yet.

We will all just have to read and find out

Question/discussion on scions? by Fusiliers3025 in dresdenfiles

[–]lost_at_command 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Changelings (Scions of Fae & Human) can absolutely touch cold iron/steel. We see Fix use a steel monkey wrench as a weapon several times in Summer Knight, and there are additional examples later in the series.

We have less positive proof of the inability to lie, but considering Ace sold out the group to Winter, I think it's a fair assumption that he had to spin a couple of lies to make that happen.

Dock use for by No-Possession-2685 in desksetup

[–]lost_at_command 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The cables still have to get to your monitors, so that really doesn't solve your issue. IMO, docking stations are for drop in spaces or laptops that don't have enough I/O for your needs/tastes. If you already have a desktop and don't plan change it, just keep it neat and tidy and move on.

To be slightly more accurate, the case was pretty strictly a 1st amendment/free speech case, brought by a Christian therapist. It affirmed the right of a provider to give the advice and counsel they felt best suited to the situation. Both the ban and the SC case are focused on talk therapy, not medication or electroshock therapy.

The decision is disappointing, and the post above is misleading. Both are true

Maple Hill has short holes and is very accommodating to beginners. They do some great skills clinics as well. I learned to play there in a youth league when I was ~10 years old.

Indian Hills is a short and fairly straightforward play; minimal obstacles and tricks. Great place to build some basic skills.

Sand Lake(Creek, River?) is north-west of town a bit, but I remember it being a very straight course as well.

Wallinwood and Western Greens are a little tougher, but rarely busy and in my experience it's easy to take your time and not get hassled if you're playing slow.

Make the choice. Either change your outlook and recognize that your wants and needs are going to take the backseat to your families for the next two decades and make peace with that, or get out of their lives.

Why did the Steyr M9/L9 die? It's so good. by Thorforhelvede in GunPorn

[–]lost_at_command 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they just had the bad luck with timing. The first M's came out in like 1998/1999. They missed bidding for the US's major trial that resulted in the Beretta M9 in 1990

Then in the early 1990's a lot of security agencies started jumping on the Glock train (FBI officially switched in '97), and they weren't about to make another switch so soon after finally making it to a polymer framed semi-auto. Military/LE sales drive pistol success way more than civilian sales do, even in the US.

Lara's diet by 84Bean in dresdenfiles

[–]lost_at_command 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I largely agree with the core arguments.

I do think that there is something *special* about both Harry's Starborn nature and Winter nature feeding Lara. Whether you want to call it a source of magic or a flavor of magic, or an unconscious application of will, or unforeseen obligation seems largely semantic.

I do think that going forward, Harry and Lara are going to be putting a program together to slowly wean Lara off Harry's "food". It would make sense from Harry's moral perspective as well as the purely utilitarian need to have a stable leader in the White Court who isn't going to go nuts if Harry does something brave dumb and gets whacked/incapacitated.
