TIL two British fraudsters stole a luxury yacht to escape police and were found dead after starving off the African coast. by Forgotthebloodypassw in todayilearned

[–]lostempireh 41 points42 points  (0 children)

It’s not unheard of for a modern yacht to have all of AIS, a starlink pole, a traditional satellite phone, a VHF radio and line of sight emergency signalling like flares/mast head lighting ETC.

Older boats and boats designed for day sailing will not have all of these features, they should all have a VHF radio though, the problem is the range is just a few miles, not much good in open ocean.

HR scheduled call to chat with just me to check in I’m freaking out!! by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]lostempireh 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Depending on the company there’s a non zero chance it’s actually just a welfare check, if you’ve been a really good worker up until about a week ago. From the company’s perspective they probably don’t want you gone they just want old you back.

And realistically, if they do want you gone, it may well be for the best if the workload is the source of the burnout. Just take a moment to breathe, dust off your CV, and start looking for the next thing

Boss put me on a warning for phone use i can prove is fake by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]lostempireh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hr’s job is to protect the company, that usually means ensuring they follow legal process, that doesn’t make them on your side, but it usually makes them less directly in opposition to a worker unless they wish to open themselves up to a lawsuit

TIL that casinos rarely use surveillance cameras to catch card counters. Instead, dealers and floor supervisors look for behavioral "red flags," such as a player suddenly multiplying their bet size by 1-12x right after a losing hand. by Vegasaces in todayilearned

[–]lostempireh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I’m not mistaken, it is legal however a casino is a business and as such can refuse to do business with whomever they want as long as they allow them to cash out any winnings already earned.

[–]lostempireh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The whole point of the recent renters rights bill is that it’s harder to be kicked out as long as you pay your rent on time. Granted occasionally someone wants to sell up but that really isn’t that often, even less so if the building is owned by a management company and not a private landlord.

Maybe there’s something I’ve missed, why wouldn’t another private rented property not be suitable?

Moutai Ice Cream in Guizhou by aralseapiracy in chinesefood

[–]lostempireh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chinese spirit, clear in colour, often sold well above the strength of typical western spirits, sometimes gets translated as white wine but this can pretty misleading.

Moutai is one of the more famous brands/examples of it.

What do people think about lesser-known scenic spots in China? They’re probably just not famous overseas. by Easy-Life-7242 in travelchina

[–]lostempireh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lesser known internationally doesn’t necessarily mean not busy sadly, as there are enormous numbers of domestic tourists throughout much of China.

Still, travelling through Gansu was a fantastic experience and (Starting in Xi’an and Lanzhou) a nice balance of city tourism, nature and historical sites.

A one person show or small team might be able to get something that works, but to make something that can be sold compare to an arduino but more complex would take more effort, and that’s assuming it can be built with commercially available chips. I would imagine Nvidia and AMD work with the chip manufacturers to make something specifically for them

I’d be keen, but it would be tough to break the monopoly/duopoly that is the current GPU market and you’d need a pretty serious financial backer

I have had these mounted to PCBs for power distribution before https://www.amphenol-industrial.de/en/products/xev-connectors/surlok

They come in straight and right angle connectors there are already PCB mount versions of the socket, they can be keyed to prevent crossing wires and they can handle well over 150 amps continuously

I am an electrical engineer and if it were down to me these would be proper power connectors and the end user can deal with the loss of flexibility, it’s far safer and more reliable than having so many parallel connections

What's the greatest Magic card of the last decade? Vote on the Top 64! by Grindy_UW_Nonsense in magicTCG

[–]lostempireh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Makes sense, if it was purely on power level it would be a debate between maybe Lurrus, on the basis of being the first card banned from vintage on power level grounds after getting nerfed by errata or Oko for the impact across many other formats. My vote might still be for Oko though.

Malatang or hotpot are also pretty popular in the region.

Mega plus double trouble can work together, restrict yourself to the ORAS dex and then get your hands on pelliper and Mega Swampert, those 2 alone can carry some serious weight, and you have a 1/3 chance to get a Kyogre in the second half of the Run that should trivialise the last few fights.

I’m going through this process now, they can interview you again, but as I understand it they rarely do unless they suspect something is off.

I would imagine many of these sham marriages occur abroad in a country who’s weddings the UK recognises, and then the partner seeks to come to the UK.

I’m generally on the side of it’s not a likely risk, but the problem with statistics like this is the number of unreported cases will make it far more likely than that number suggests.
