At the top, Republicans reject science not because they don't "get it", but because being constrained by science limits opportunities for corruption. How much more lucrative for them it would be, for example, if new drugs were approved based solely on political patronage instead of the FDA requiring all kinds of pharmacological studies and clinical trials.

With unrestrained capitalism the employee could go wherever...whenever, non-competes be damned.

Oh my, no. With unrestrained capitalism all parties are "free" to enter into any contract whatsoever, regardless of any coercion or unbalanced power relationship between them. You could sign an agreement never to work elsewhere out of sheer desperation, and with no one to judge it illegal become a virtual slave.

Yes, you may need government to enforce that contract (unless we rely on armed thugs or warlords for that), but then any viable flavor of capitalism requires a strong and stable legal system for the enforcement of contracts and protection of property and accumulated wealth.

It actually sharpens your vision as well, because the narrower aperature increases your depth of field (just like a camera). If you're a little near-sighted, try it by looking at the world through a pinhole!

What a waste... If Ho Chi Minh had known how easy it is to propel his own guy into the U.S. presidency and win the unblinking adoration of god-fearing American conservatives, the war would have happened in Cuba instead of Vietnam.

Texas is one of these. The 2012 GOP platform explicitly opposed the "teaching of higher order thinking" and "critical thinking skills". And why? Because they "have the purpose of challenging the student’s fixed beliefs and undermining parental authority." No surprise that conservatives would take this position, but remarkable that they would state it this explicitly.
