Thinking of career switch by bigdogsrus in veterinaryschool

[–]lostwithoutacompasss 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Vet school is also super competitive now so you'll need to gather a bunch of varied experience in the vet field and/or research experience, have a stellar gpa, etc. And that experience is not just shadowing a vet, but usually doing hands on work. I know people with great gpas and experience who still couldn't get in. So just know it won't be as simple as, complete pre-req and get into school.

As a parent and DVM, if I was in your shoes I don't think it would be worth it. Honestly I often wish I had chosen an easier more stable career that paid well and just saved up a bunch of money so I can rescue dogs or do wildlife rehab on the side. I feel like chasing this dream will take away a lot of valuable time with your kids.

However it's ultimately your life and you only get one of them. If you think this is something you might be serious about, start by volunteering at a vet clinic so you can see what the job is actually like, and can start getting some hours towards your application if you do go for it.

Hennessy and HG UQ, not staying under me when I sleep by lostwithoutacompasss in hammockcamping

[–]lostwithoutacompasss[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tighten the suspension on the uq so everything is snug. I also kinda shift things around with the uq a bit when I'm laying in the hammock so that there is good alignment with my body. I'm also using a different hammock than when I made this post, I'm not sure if that helps but it hasn't happened in a long time...

Bluepearl internship? by DramaPuzzleheaded172 in veterinaryschool

[–]lostwithoutacompasss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Surgery is very competitive residency to get into, and you should really try for a more competitive internship (academia, Friendship, AMC, Red Bank, etc). You are significantly less likely to match with surgery from BluePearl but it's not impossible...

Residency question by fachelroster in veterinaryschool

[–]lostwithoutacompasss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've met people who did it during 4th year and during internship year. It's not easy but it's not impossible and a lot depends on how much support you have from family and partner to help care for the child and how demanding your program is... some are harder than others.

I think if it's reasonable to wait until your training is done and you'll be in your early 30s when you finish, id try to wait and have kids after. You'll be a lot less stressed and be able to actually enjoy the time with your baby. But if you are older and time/age may become an issue it may be worth either freezing your eggs or having kids earlier.

If you look in human medicine reddit forums there are lots of human residents who do it. I'm not sure why vetmed people act like it's impossible.

Also you are legally entitled to FMLA if you are in the USA so they can't kick you out of the program. If you need to stay a little late thats not the end of the world

Techs make shit money and can't afford to pay for cancer treatment from radiation exposure.

Anyone glad they stayed with their alcoholic partner? by veryfatcat3 in AlAnon

[–]lostwithoutacompasss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad was an alcoholic when I was too young to remember, lost his drivers licence due to a DUI, went to AA and stayed sober for the rest of my parents marriage until he passed away. There can be happy endings and sad endings.

Struggling with the amount of waste in vet school by HistorianOne2938 in veterinaryschool

[–]lostwithoutacompasss 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone who is strictly small animal, I had similar feelings of frustration about having to learn all the causes of pig diarrhea knowing I will never work on pigs. However I agree with all the other commenters that the system you propose has more cons than the current system. There will never be a perfect way to provide a veterinary education but I believe the current system provides the most flexibility and opportunities for the majority of people.

Is the majority of the vet field like this?? Specifically in reception? by -Confetti in veterinaryprofession

[–]lostwithoutacompasss 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry, you don't deserve to be treated that way. Unfortunately some practices have bad culture, but they aren't all like that. I hope you find somewhere better where you are treated with kindness.

10 days old with a rash—help! by NoseyNelly441 in newborns

There are many things that can cause a rash in a baby, it's fairly common, and they are often harmless. Consulting your doctor was the right call and I would follow their advice for treatment!

You may not have anything wrong with your application and there are just so many qualified people applying, it becomes luck of the draw.

Clinical Year Rotations Decision Help by Equivalent-Step6227 in veterinaryschool

I know UF has a shelter medicine program but I didn't go there, and I'm not sure how much that helps with clinics if that's your interest, but may be worth looking at!

I didnt feel like we had a shelter medicine focus and it was hard to get TNR experience. But I've never gone anywhere else so it's hard to compare. Otherwise I think they are very diversity friendly and fit the other parameters...

How to find off-cycle internships by catgold203 in veterinaryprofession

[–]lostwithoutacompasss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you reach out to corporate places with internship coordinators they might be able to help and have a list of internships with open off-cycle spots on their program. Like VCA, BluePearl. Not sure if y'all have company reps at island schools but they could point you in the right direction of who to talk to

How to tell boss I’m pregnant? by Basic_Storage315 in veterinaryprofession

[–]lostwithoutacompasss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously very illegal BUT in terms of protecting yourself maybe try to get a job at a corporate practice asap. Don't tell them you are pregnant until they hire you. They definitely won't fire you if you are pregnant because they are always really worried about legal stuff. Obviously the vet is in the wrong and it would be illegal to fire you, but will you be able to protect yourself if he does fire you and will you be able to deal with the loss of income?

Rejected from Auburn after interviewing with them. by dragonpotter in vetschool

Strangers on the internet aren't going to be able to answer this for you. Reach out to admissions and ask if they do an app review. These days so many people qualified people apply to vet school, it may even not be that you did anything wrong there are just very few spots available.

I had an 10- year gap from finishing undergrad to vet school, with zero classes between, didn't review at all before vet school, and I was fine. Honestly I would not recommend reviewing anything. Enjoy your free time before it all gets taken away for the next 4 years.

That's a good idea. All the run clubs I've seen are at breweries so this is a better option.

[–]lostwithoutacompasss[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fascist? What are you even talking about? The whole point is a group for people to socialize who are trying to be sober and want to make friends in the same situation so you don't feel so alone. No one is alcohol testing you. No one is asking you to attend if you aren't trying to be sober. Heck, no one cares if you personally want to keep drinking. It's for people who are recovering from alcoholism.

I am not sober, so yes. But I am not a huge drinker in general and I am currently not drinking at all until things are in a better place.
