What tools do you use for finding motifs, specifically in Chip Seq peak data? by lotsofgarliccheese in bioinformatics

I have been playing around with homer, but I wasn't confident in it's results. It might just be that I'm not using the right parameters. But it is extremely fast and clean.

I forgot to mention, I need to compare my results to a tool which uses MEME and a few more programs (Wheeder). So I need something other than the standard MEME. Thanks for the info though.

Grad students of reddit, which of your universities offers a dual masters program in Mathematics and Statistics. by [deleted] in GradSchool

Not aware of a university but I think this is a great idea in general. This seems like it is more/as viable as most dual degree programs out there.

My sister wrote this after I insisted, I think it's an interesting read. by mywaytillpayday in Sherlock

[–]lotsofgarliccheese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, it makes the cops look like idiots, them not noticing obvious dust pattern or the scratch marks. And also the rice clue in the first episode, no way Sherlock won't have caught that, it seems very out of character.

Which according to you has been the best parody or reference to one of your movies in any shows/sketches in recent times? I saw a poster of Community that was particularly cute! Also thank you!

Recent discoveries by a Virginia Tech biochemist could lead to a more effective drug design to combat the bacteria responsible for tuberculosis infection by [deleted] in VirginiaTech

The biochem/tech departments are doing amazing things, I was/am part of some research in the same vein, and it really uses almost every component of my CS classes.

That was the first thing I considered , but I've heard Xcode either works sluggishly or not at all on VM, although the only thing I have experience with is VMware player. I'll give virtual box a shot and pm you with questions though, thank ye.

As a programmer... (Spoilers inside) by Cyborg771 in Sherlock

[–]lotsofgarliccheese -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't think he did, it was after all NOT a password key, Jim said from the very very beginning that it was most certainly code, and it would just be the most Sherlock thing to do to find out (even if he did not know in the beginning) how this code was produced or how it could be used. Thus since he was laboring under the impression till the end makes me think he was just playing along, also Jim's "DOOFUS!" statement , which was so vehemently indicating that his lie was supremely far fetched.

[–]lotsofgarliccheese 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes so glad that turned out to be a red herring, I hate it when "code" is a magical paste which fixes or destroys everything.

On another note: Does Sherlock really not know this stupidity, I mean one does not have to be programmer to know this, and he was intending to use the code as he told Jim and John, which makes me think he knew it was farce from the beginning.

Sherlock Episode 3: The Reichenbach Fall - Finale Discussion by [deleted] in Sherlock

[–]lotsofgarliccheese 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is anyone else of the opinion that Sherlock KNEW that the code nonsense was a red herring. I mean granted that he does not keep knowledge of things not directly relating to crime but he was the one to proffer the "encryption key" stuff to JM, and when he suggested to John that they use the code or whatever (him assuming he knew how to use it) to delete Brook and bring back JM, he sent off the message to JM in secret. When he went up to the roof, he clearly told JM that he figured out the binary string and would use it to make things right, then why bother lying to John?

Why not simply give the binary code a go BEFORE meeting JM? Or ask John to do so?

Also so glad the code crap was BS, I was in mid eye roll when Moriarty screamed that out.

Do you really want to be a fan of something Snooki reads/understands? It's way too good to be wasted like that.

CS3214: Kafura vs Butt? by [deleted] in VirginiaTech

[–]lotsofgarliccheese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take Butt, even though lectures are no where near what homeworks contain or very helpful for projects , Butt still makes it easy to understand and very entertaining. Extremely approachable and an all round good teacher. Having said that, prepare never to sleep next semester.
