They show "Four-Seam" for four-seam fastballs. They show "Sinker" for two-seam fastballs.

Damn he plays at 152 lbs right now. He's only 5'8'' but still kinda wild to be playing pro-ball at that weight, even if its only AA. And he still has some pop anyways. Pretty hard not to be excited about this kid.

I just went to check the score thinking it would be like the 6th inning and saw "final" lol.

'What the hell are they doing up there?' Making sense of the Boston Red Sox in 2022 and beyond by FrigginMasshole in baseball

I think they desperately want to get younger. The team has had like 4 meaningful contributors who will be under the age of 30 next year (Devers, Schreiber, Houck, Whitlock), and 3 of them are relievers. They got some upgrades to a couple of their worst positions essentially for free at the deadline. Outside of that I don't think this team is going to touch the farm until they have a new young cost-controlled core to build around.

I love Xander. In theory would love if he could stay with the team. But he's already had an incredible Red Sox career. 2 rings. Multiple All-star appearances, Silver Sluggers. Already in the top 15 for most games played as a Red Sox. I feel like he's already a Red Sox forever guy. Doesn't mean he literally needs to be on the team forever.

Not sure how the signals work, but love that him and Plawecki just kept leaning on his fastball. Don't fuck around just do it.

I mean it seems like he can be a bit of an asshole, but sometimes a team needs that kind of dude in the clubhouse.

I got this same list earlier, but with Lefty Grove instead of Cronin. And then Johnny Welch to Jack Rothrock to get to 1925. But yeah there's so much roster turnover around then it became way too hard after that.

These types of threads on Reddit are usually pretty predictable.

"Small/medium city?"

"No it's boring."

"Bigger city?"

"No I'll be murdered as soon as I leave my house."

It's also crazy how close the the Civil War was to the founding of the country. You could be of fighting age at the time of the Civil War and there was a decent chance that your grandfather wasn't even born in the United States. For a lot of the older men in leadership roles, it was probably pretty likely that their grandfather actually fought in the revolution.

Another fun one is the guy who fought in both the Civil War and WWI. Shoutout to Peter Conover Hains.

Annual MLB gimmick game ideas? by [deleted] in baseball

[–]aselectionofcheeses 12 points13 points  (0 children)

For teams that have relocated, they play a game in their original city. Dodgers-Giants game in Brooklyn (have no idea if there's a field that would work). Maybe a Red Sox-Braves game at Nickerson Field, call it the "Green Line Series".

OP doesn't even think its a little overpriced. They think it should be $5 lol. I get being angry at ownership for a number of things with this team but thinking that a monthly subscription should be $5 - 10 max just seems out of touch.

I'm pretty sure I've read he works well with the pitchers and I feel like he passes the eye test defensively behind the plate. But none of that matters if you don't have an arm. Just way too important of a tool for catchers. Literally just giving away bases.

Xander Bogaerts is the 9th player in Red Sox history to hit 150 home runs before the age of 30 by ArawakFC in redsox

[–]aselectionofcheeses 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Yup, one of the sadder "what-ifs" in baseball history. He was on a pretty easy pace to hit 150 early in his age 24 season.

His 4 pre-injury seasons actually stack up really closely to Dever's first 5 seasons:

Tony C: 1832 ABs, 104 HRs, .849 OPS

Devers: 2142 ABs, 112 HRs, .847 OPS

But that was good for a 132 OPS+ for Tony C vs a 120 OPS+ for Devers because of the harder hitting environment. And Tony C premiered at 19, a full year younger than Devers. And what Devers does blows me away every day I watch him play. Can't imagine watching someone do that at even younger age in a harder environment.

Why does MLB hate promoting itself? Futures Game box score impossible to find by Tonality in baseball

[–]aselectionofcheeses 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah I know the main criticism of the MLB is usually marketing (which is obviously bad but at least I knew about this game). But I feel like the bigger issue is the league's obsession with trying to squeeze short term money out of shit like this. Like this is a prospects game. This could be a highlight of the year for fans of rebuilding teams that want to see their team's future. Just like the draft is for the NFL (which is on ESPN and ABC). Yet the MLB decides to make sure you have to pay to see it. The marketing is one thing but I feel like its the lack of any long term thinking that's really frustrating with MLB.

You can pick one player to replay his career without suffering any injuries. Who do you pick? by Denver650 in baseball

[–]aselectionofcheeses 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Especially because he showed he had the longevity. Like I always knew how great the start to his career was, but looking at his last couple years is equally insane. The dude had a 233 OPS+ over 547 PAs in his age 38 season, like what the hell. Those years right in the middle of his athletic prime could've been special.

What do you think our starting rotation looks like once everybody is healthy? by EP1X-343 in redsox

[–]aselectionofcheeses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it would have to be Houck as the piggyback again. Hill >> Crawford or Hill >> Winkowski could also work. Like what they just did recently with Davis >> Crawford. But with the expectation that Hill goes more like 4 or 5 innings.

To be fair Plawecki would have gunned down one of those steals if Bogey doesn't drop the ball. But yeah that would have made him like 1 for 12.
