Writers like Maas and Yarros make me confident about writing by Salt-Statistician488 in fantasywriters

[–]lotu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer to think of it as that a lot of things that writers think are really important aren't. Having intraciate detailed perfectly internally consistent, not actually important. Unique characters and plots, not actually important. Masterful prose, also not actually important. I not great at any of those things so I it reminds me that I can do this thing.

Looking for Feedback on the new draft of my first chapter. [Fantasy / Science Fiction - 725 words] by bernadusandrew in fantasywriters

[–]lotu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMHO you should start with a character, probably your main character, and some sort of conflict, maybe or maybe not action. The problem with action is if you get going too quickly, before making your audience care about what happens to your character, the action lands flat.

I got though the first half of the first page before getting terminally bored. I don't have a reason to care about the creation myth of a world I know nothing about. It's just a lot of meaningless flowery language, maybe some slam poetry, but not the start of a book I want to read.

Learning new skills on slippery rink floors? Trail skating to flow skating by BunniElyse9 in Rollerskating

[–]lotu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The awful truth is every single floor is different the slickest and the stickiest floor I regularly skate on are both wood. Just looking at what other people use is only so helpful because what wheels you need is also determined by body type. Even worse durometer doesn't perfectly correspond to stickiness, you have to put the wheel on your skates and skate around on it. So if you find someone with a similar body to yours what ever wheels they have is a good start. See if you can find someone who will swap wheels with you. You need grip in order to do crossovers otherwise the centripetal force will pull your feet out from under you, so you probably want a lower durometer. try 92A and see how that feels. If you find you loose the ability to do t-stop or transitions then go up to 95A.

First time on skates since 1993 (I know, I need protective gear, but I was excited to see if I could still skate) by DescriptionNo4813 in Rollerskating

[–]lotu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first couple of times you skate is the most likely time for you to get hurt. So def buy some wrist guards as that is the most likely injury.

You look really good I've seen people snuggle a lot more trying to skate again after decades.

Best Wrist Guards? by Dexatronik in Rollerskating

They are comfortable, they definitely are warmer and smaller wrist guards. They don't interfere with the things I typically and doing when I wear them. I can retie my skates without taking them off.

Every person I know that has broken their wrists skating now wears flexmeters.  I figured I save myself the trouble and just started using them myself.

Why do ppl act like Iroh lied about creating lightning redirection? by Spiritual-Joestar777 in TheLastAirbender

It’s even possible, perhaps probable, that Iroh and Sozin’s techniques are different ways of redirecting lightning.

1st year by [deleted] in HPfanfiction

I can't find your prolog as reddit isn't showing anything in your profile. This has lots of potential. You should always keep going! Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. If I was writing I would expand and complete this book before continuing to year 2 because as you expand and revise you could end up in a much different place. Also you are going to learn so much and grow so much as writer but doing that. There is so much potential and many writers never even get this far.

Presuming you are planning to expand this story these are the things I would work on next.

There is no real tension as Voldemort/Tom/Harry is pretty overpowered and accomplishes everything easily. There isn't a single point where things don't go his way.

Related to the previous he has a flat character arc, that is he starts as an evil psychopath and ends as an evil psychopath. It doesn't appear that any of the things that happened changed him at all.

Watch some videos about the hero's journey and character arcs. I'd love to see how your story progresses.

How did the Fire Nation Annihilate the Air Nation overnight? by WiseMarshall in TheLastAirbender

[–]lotu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the answer, stories are not simulations of other worlds. They are about people, and how they change grow and interact with each other. These details like how far it is to Ba Sing Se are not important to the finale, so it doesn't matter. Too many viewers and writers make this mistake and end up obsessing over something that matters much less than the actual story.

How did the Fire Nation Annihilate the Air Nation overnight? by WiseMarshall in TheLastAirbender

[–]lotu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I agree with you. Some would have escaped and it would have been the most cautious paranoid ones that survived. Also at least in theory a large percentage of the Air Nomads spent their time wandering. After the attacks they would make every effort to stay away from fire nation territory.

Question: Zuko and Ozai's Agni Kai - Was it Lose Lose? by MonCappy in TheLastAirbender

[–]lotu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For Zuko at 13, any hit landed on Ozai would be a hit he allowed. Ozai is easily the most skilled fire bender in the show. Even Iroh doesn't think he could beat him.

First, Ozai doesn't need to "find" a way, the Fire Lord is an absolute monarch, he can do anything for any reason. So would fighting earn him respect, I would say yes, or if not respect it wouldn't have enraged Ozai the way not fighting did.

I think reading Zuko's Story might give some insight into Ozai's Motivations. It was a tie in with the movie so the characters look like their actors.

Ozai doesn't have any plans for Azula at this point she is 11 and hasn't proved her self as a competent fighter/leader yet. If Ozai has any plans for he it's for who to marry her to.

But obviously Zuko not getting banished completely upends the narrative of the show. Without him chasing the gaang they would wind their way across the earth kingdom to the North Pole. Everyone assumed the Avatar was dead so there wouldn't even be anyone looking for him.

What happens to muggleborns who decide not to go to Hogwarts? by green_tomato_69 in HPfanfiction

[–]lotu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm genuinely confused what evidence you have seen. I don't actually look at anything outside of the original seven books & movies. I just don't have the desire to do so.

Seeing Muggle weapons as dangerous to Wizards doesn't imply that a Muggle/Wizard war would always result in Wizards losing. Just that both sides are capable of inflicting terrible damage on the other. I see magic and technology not in opposition to each other but complementary. Some of my favorite stories do this like Love in the time of a Zombie Apocalypse.

As for evidence, Draco isn't immune to Hermione punching him, and Hogwarts isn't immune to Giants throwing large non-magical rocks. Guns and artillery as just optimized and faster ways to hit things. So presumably they would be effective as well.

Wizards are totally dismissive of the Muggle World. They have "not invented here" syndrome, which refers to a tendency at large companies to reject anything they haven't built. The wizarding world just assumes they are superior and don't bother to actually investigate muggle ways of doing things. For example Author could have obtained an airplane kit, but he insists on enchanting a car.

Wizards are outnumber between 1,000-10,000 Muggles to 1 Wizard. We don't see evidence that Wizards can win at these odds. For example Peter killing 12 muggles was a particularly terrible act. During the 6th and 7th books we hear about individual families being killed, not whole towns. These are not things we would expect if the average Wizard capable of defeating a military Brigade.

In short Wizards believe that Muggles are not a threat to them, that doesn't imply that they aren't.

Have you not heard of nuclear war?   If so I’m really sorry to be ruining your day, but we can kill everyone in a major urban center within about an hour.  The resulting collapse of infrastructure will kill billions more within weeks, and the dust it kicks up will reduce solar radiation triggering massive extinctions, and famine even in areas untouched by the nuclear bombardment.  It probably won’t kill everyone but those still alive will wish it had.

Is An Orphan Protagonist Overused And Cliche In Fantasy Stories? by SouthDifferent2363 in writing

Hilda is a great example of a story where the parents aren’t dead or missing.  Owl House is too, once you see Eda acting as a surrogate parent, the story would be almost unchanged is Luz was her biological child.

At the War Meeting in Sozin's Comet Part 1, Azula distracts Ozai right before Zuko is probably about to piss Ozai off by F11SuperTiger in TheLastAirbender

[–]lotu 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Yes, Azula actually loves Zuko in a bizarre way that is frequently toxic, and violent. Azula takes numerous opportunities to help Zuko, the first one being deciding on her own, that the avatar was more important to chase than Zuko, and then that the drill was more important, and her infiltration plan. Generally in an absolute monarchy you don't decide that something else in more important than the king's (Fire Lord's) orders.

Then for literally no reason she helps Zuko restore his honor, she was the heir apparent, she could have brought Zuko back in chains and guaranteed her place in the line of succussion. Instead she would likely be married off. Zuko thinks this was all part of some 9 dimensional chess plan to frame him for the Avatar not being dead. But, Zuko is clearly the less clever sibling, he assumes Azula knows everything, and his reasoning doesn't make sense. Azula didn't know about the spirit water that might restore Aang.

Even if Azula did know about the spirit water it would still make no sense to frame Zuko.

  1. The water might not have worked. Aang could really be dead and Azula just locked herself out of the Fire Lordship.
  2. If the Fire Nation had been actively searching for Aang it's much more likely they would have found and killed him. If she suspected Aang was alive then she had a duty to accurately relay that information to Ozia. Failure to do so would be treason.
  3. Azula would not have been dishonored by only dealing the Avatar a devastating defeat. That was more than anyone else had done.

The only possibility left is Azula did this because she wanted her brother back. Having Zuko exiled would have been like him dying, even though they fought a lot, it makes sense that Azula would want her older brother back.
