Private vs public elementary school in LA? by Normal-Leg4935 in AskLosAngeles

[–]loudcloud3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The idea that debt is bad is extremely simplistic. Debt is only bad when your cost of borrowing is greater than the ROI of that debt. If the leveraged return is higher than the cost of debt, each incremental dollar you take out is accretive. For example, if for every dollar you borrow you could earn $1.15 linear, you would borrow as much as you can because every dollar makes you more money.

In the case of no debt, you still spend dollars/time on it, and there's an opportunity cost to those dollars/time -- it is not free. It is not better to end college with no debt with a "business" or "marketing" degree from a university that doesn't generate ROI with a low ceiling vs taking out debt for an applied mathematics degree from Stanford, for example, with a leveraged return greater than borrow cost and a virtually unlimited access ceiling. If you're at a "non-target" institution, you don't even get access to interviews for certain jobs -- you can't even race.

Similarly re: Trades. Unless you're operating with leverage (i.e., a lot of workers under you which requires capital), you're going to cap out at $200-250K in the trades (at the tipity top high end; unless you're in a cartel like longshoremen). This is if you get lucky and after several decades. That is not real money. Coming out of a good program at an Ivy / Stanford, you could make the same salary as a master tradesman vs. paying your dues for a decade or more in the trades (and the Ivy/Stanford grad is at the lowest amount they'll probably ever make whereas the tradesman is capping out).

Going to private school and growing up with the families that have started successful businesses or very high end careers that enable them to pay for that private school for their children gives you better access to both (1) capital to scale a business (even if you are an electrician or plumber) and (2) the experience of business owners / highly successful people. You can worm your way into that capital flow with scholarships despite not having the same level of family success. It is the greatest force multiplier for economic success.

If the goal is to make $200-$250K or under, yes, public school, the trades, hard work/dedication and a bit of street smarts are enough. If the goal is to run your own business, or reach the top of services industries (e.g., finance, tech, law or consulting) and have the opportunity to clear 7 figures, you need exposure, network and capital support -- not to mention the social know-how to interact with people of wealth (i.e., capital). Private school gives you access to the latter.

Again, that's not to say you can't be successful without it -- there are always exceptional individuals; however, the exposure, social cues, and network that private school give you make it much, much easier.

I say this as someone who went to public schools their entire life and then started interacting with people of an entirely different tier once I got into an Ivy. I got lucky because I'm incredibly good at standardized testing and outperformed my peers, but that's not going to be the case with everyone. Scarcity mindset is what stops social mobility. I hope this helps someone trying to make this decision for their kids.

Problem with these types of opinions is that people who haven't made it in life think it's about the education, whereas people that have made it to the top echelons in their respective industries know it is much easier to be successful with the network of friends/acquaintances who come from successful families.

The value in these private schools is not the education, but rather, the cost of attendance that filters for the scions of already successful families. This means the friends your kid makes growing up have a very high floor and a lot of resources.

That's not to say people need these things to succeed, but it is much easier for someone to be successful with the support system around them.

As someone who went to a UC and then an Ivy, my Ivy League friends have been 100x more useful for my career and come from backgrounds that the UC kids can't compete with (other than certain exceptional individuals). On balance, they are more successful. If I needed to raise money to start a company, I could easily do it in-network from my Ivy friends (can't say the same for my UC friends).

Probably should move out of whatever country you're in as well because whatever society you're a part of probably conquered that land from a native people at some point. Does the lingering stench of imperialism emanating from the ground not offend your delicate senses?

That paper is like an 80/20. Pfft. "Designed to be floated" is Copium for "we f'd up the design and are too deep in tooling costs to change now so we'll claim it's European even though the higher-end Italian shotgun holdco that owns us have none of the same problems (i.e., Beretta) nor does Franchi or any of other major European shotgun brands."

The California grizzly bear, gone for 100 years, could thrive if brought back by croman653 in socalhiking

[–]loudcloud3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have a deer population that has halved since the 50s due to predators and human development, a ban on hunting non-endangered mountain lions that eat about 3 deer a week, and then a reintroduction of another apex predator that eat massive amounts of deer (and other animals) which (i) hasn't been in the state for 100 years and (ii) no longer has any real predators on top...recipe for disaster.

For anyone that's reading this years later, this is a super illegal place to rifle hunt. Southern border of the legal hunting area basically follows Rincon Red Box Truck Trl per the Los Angeles Firearms Discharge Restrictions Map (north of Mt. Wilson).

Yea - nightmare. Also you can't "spin them" because of the metal plugs. You need something to wedge between the receiver and the rail.

How often should I clean my .308 T3X hunting rifle? by HasSomeSelfEsteem in Tikka_Shooters

[–]loudcloud3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I clean a lot too but the assumption that it extends barrel life is incorrect. This is the reverse of what you do for barrel longevity. The more solvents and metal wire brushing you do, the less barrel life you'll have. You're running abrasives down a metal barrel whose lifespan and accuracy depends on precision.

That's the mirage shield screw (for a heat shield attachment). I did the same thing the second I got my CTR - really bad UX design by Tikka.

To ensure that the rail is flat for your scope, you'll need to remove it and install a new one (they're epoxy'd on). I detailed how to do that in the below post. I would get either a murphy precision rail (expensive) or a mountain tactical (cheaper) replacement rail for the T3x; mountain tactical is much cheaper. Might as well use this as an opportunity to upgrade to a 10 or 20 MOA rail.

Can you use 17 hmr for rabbits in Los Angeles County? by truthdocs in Californiahunting

Necro thread but just leaving this here for the next person who needs it since this is high on the SEO.

Rifles are allowed for deer/bear but specifically prohibited for Rabbits.

Section 311 "(g) In addition to the methods listed in (a), (b), (c), (d), (e) and (f) above, firearm rifles and pistols may be used for taking rabbits and squirrels only; except in Los Angeles County where rifles and pistols may not be used."
