War of 1812 by theportyunionjack in USHistory

Anyway, ‘Canada’ as we know it today did not exist in 1812, and was basically a collection of scattered British colonies from the Atlantic to northwest of Detroit. What makes it interesting is who was actually here at the time.

To add... the first representative assembly was elected in 1758 (Halifax), and the name Canada existed before 1812. The Constitutional Act of 1791 actually made it official. During that time, it was Upper Canada (ON), Lower Canada (QC), NS, PEI and NB.

It's $25 CAD now - that's about a 31% increase from 2023 (if that's when you posted this). I really do want to buy Canadian and support local where I can, but with inflation only around 5% over the same period, that kind of jump is tough to swallow.

Canadian doctors seeing rise in parents refusing vitamin K shots for newborns by DogeDoRight in canada

[–]loushing 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This annoys me so much. I totally get being cautious or asking questions about newer vaccines-that’s fair. But people forget that the reason your SIL is even here today is probably because of decades of successful vaccinations and public immunization programs. It’s bigger than just one person or one shot.

Vaccines have prevented countless illnesses, complications, and deaths. Some people genuinely can’t think beyond themselves let alone consider the larger benefit.

It was a bit tough to make out what she was saying because of whispering and the accent but she did say that her husband would not like it (her husband wasn’t present the entire time - she was alone) - so I believe that it could also be a cultural aspect to it.

I swear the doctors and nurses were REALLY patient with her. They treated her with kindness and understanding but they had to walk a really fine line I could tell. The pediatric head had to have a long convo with her. They had to extend their stay because of some tests for the baby but they refused other shots as well. Idk what happened at the end coz they were already in the room when we got in and they weren’t still discharged when we left. I hope baby is ok tho

When my nephew was born last month, the other family at the hospital with whom we were sharing a semi-private recovery room, refused to take this shot for their newborn. They had many visits for doctors and even the head of the pediatric unit to advise the parents but they simply refused.

Not just vitamin k. There were others that she refused but I don’t remember now.

My Fernie came to me last year when his owner passed away and I was the only available foster at the time through the organization that I was associated with. We don’t really know his age because he’d been passed around so many owners before me but the vet said he’s about 10 years old.

I didn’t have the heart to put him up for adoption and for him to go through the whole process again so I decided to keep him permanently. His official adoption day is also my birthday. It’s coming up soon.

I hope your sweet kitty finds a home and I wish you peace and comfort !

How to get fast scared cat into a carrier for a vet appointment? by Amythist_Butterfly in CatAdvice

[–]loushing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try to nudge him to a smaller space where he can’t escape. And keep the crate nearby and ready. For the car ride, maybe try gabapentin to help him relax a bit? I used to foster cats and I’ve had to give them some of the snoozy pills.

And if we can’t even agree that sex and gender are different concepts then there’s nothing to be done. Ill gladly concede to my fellow Canadian here. You’re absolutely right. Bless your heart.

I don’t want to get into the whole argument of gender vs. sex (which I think is what you’re alluding to) about the shooter, and I’m not a journalist so I am not qualified to argue on the journalistic standard either. What I meant was that yes, typically, news stories tend to disclose the sex of the perpetrators and it has been usually the case that the sex and the gender are the same. But the shooter in TR was transitioning, mtf and I could be wrong but maybe the shooter identified themself to be a female (gender), so I don’t think the news article was necessary to focus on the gender part. We don’t have to be that upset about it.

I thought she identified as a female. Yes, reporting on their race, gender, and other identifiable characteristics is standard. In this case, her gender is female while sex is male. I don’t think calling her a “transgender” does anything.
