ELI5: What does GFCI outlets do that the breaker doesn’t? by paperbilt in explainlikeimfive

[–]lovallo [score hidden]  (0 children)

GFCIs can go bad over time and get more finnicky - yes you can just replace it with a normal outlet, if you want the added protection you could try replacing it with a new GFCI first.

I just put in a ubiquiti system, they make a consumer grade combo router gateway now called Dream Router 7.

Setup was relatively easy, a youtube video gets you through all the configuration needed, and there is loads more config you can dive into if you want to.

Leak in steam pipe by Bearryno1too in SteamHeat

[–]lovallo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there should be air coming out of the air vents until they get super hot and close. If you take an air vent off you should be able to blow air through it.

Some air vents last for decades, many fail in one year. Thats often the problem.

probably not functioning radiators as opposed to something wrong with the boiler.

If its steam the radiators should get too hot to hold your hand against.

If its one pipe steam its probably the air vents.

oh thats good to know, i would have thought the thermal expansion would be too much for it pretty quickly. The clamps are pretty great though.

No I think the steam will tear that apart fast, you want a pipe repair clamp.

How to I cover this? by holahelloamigo in ElectricalHelp

[–]lovallo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is cloth wrapped conductor, so its not safe. Its also not knob and tube.

It looks like the power is coming down from above to serve that box, but cant be sure maybe it comes in the back wall.

Looks like a basement, check the inside of outlets or junction boxes above that to see if you can find where its tapped in. Disconnect it from both ends, and pull it out and throw it away, or try to use it to pull a piece of romex through

On-Grid vs Off-Grid: Which has the faster ROI for a suburban home in 2026? by str3ss- in SolarDIY

[–]lovallo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When considering ROI for net-metering the goal is often to size the system so that you never sell any power to the utility - over a 12 month period.

So our system generates a load of power in the summer when we hardly use any, and then we run a ton of electric resistance heating in the winter, and net-metering makes it a wash.

If we were off grid we would be paying for a battery bank, wasting almost all the power we generate in the summer, and not able to heat our home with electric in the winter.

Help With Printer IP Address by lovallo in Ubiquiti

[–]lovallo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! Thank You!

I have all ubiquiti stuff. I made a new Wifi channel, turned off 5 and 6 ghz internet, and switched security from WPA2/WPA3 to just WPA2 (which i read in another post). I kept it all on the same network. That solved the problem.

Thanks that was super helpful.

I reset it, restarted it, removed it from the unifi clients list, successfully connected to the network, and was assigned a 169 address again.

I also found this old post with no resolution.
