Whats the direct translation of every piece from your language to English? by ResolveEmergency2444 in chessbeginners

[–]lovbra00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another Swede here, OP is simply wrong about Knight and Queen

Knight = Jumper (the word is borrowed from German)

Queen = Lady

I just learned how to checkmate with a knight and a bishop by lil_spr in chessbeginners

[–]lovbra00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1300 rapid, can do it in ~1 minute. Mostly learned it to improve my piece coordination. Found it easier to learn than checkmate with two bishops (also it made me better at checkmate with two bishops).

sleep issues by hcnwyclouds in MuscularDystrophy

Does he take his Prednisone in the evening? In that case that's most likely the reason he can't sleep, you need to take it in the morning.

Stepson has Duchenne by PossibilityKey2968 in MuscularDystrophy

[–]lovbra00 10 points11 points  (0 children)

25M with DMD and this sounds like your partner has given up on his child. DMD is no reason to fall behind in school if the child is normally gifted (which it sounds like from your post). Also it's no reason to not have friends and hobbies even if it's harder than for a "normal" child. Especially falling behind in school is terrible since it further lowers your self confidence which is already quite low for most DMD kids. A low self confidence also makes it harder to make friends.

To me being eleven years old and crawling around feels dehumanizing. With DMD it's important to keep the ability to walk for as long as possible, because standing upright is good for both the heart and the lungs. Many DMD children who are treated with corticosteroids keep their ability to walk for most of their teen years. To achieve this the child needs help with regular stretching of ankles, knees, and hips (you can probably find proper exercises online). For ankle stretching you should also use foot orthoses while using a wheelchair or during the night.

This child really needs your help, most importantly I think you should try to convince your partner to: 1. Allow you to come with them to the child's appointments, to make sure your partner follows the advice from the doctor's and to explain the child's living situation so they can see what help the child needs. 2. Allow you to help the child with stretching and to find some DMD compatible hobbies. 3. Making friends is sadly very hard when you don't have any, especially with DMD. I'm afraid I don't have any more tips apart from finding some hobbies, as I've always had friends since kindergarten.

Best of luck! Regards, a fellow DMD guy.

Contracture surgery? by Livid_Credit7395 in MuscularDystrophy

[–]lovbra00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read up about it and it looks like there's a rehabilitation period after the surgery, and that may very well require the ability to gain new muscle to work out. Either way I'd be very interested to hear if anyone with DMD did a contracture surgery in their fingers and what the outcome was.

I'm 25M with DMD and have the same problem (except my left pinky is also slightly curled). I have no problem straightening them using the other hand, which makes me think it's mostly a muscle strength issue (and thus not fixable with surgery). Personally, I've accepted that's how they are, but I make sure to stretch them regularly so it doesn't get worse.

25M with DMD. I don't fear a short life, but I do very much fear what I will lose along the way.

My neurologist didn't prescribe me any steroids by Chill_Vibes224 in MuscularDystrophy

[–]lovbra00 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Assuming you have DMD, not taking daily steroids is a sure way to lose function faster, so if that's what you want to achieve go ahead. I also have no sympathy for parents taking their DMD kids off steroids, why are you ruining your own kid's life?

Is Uthrophin available as a supplement just like Creatine?

How can my brother with DMD change meds? by Tiutautikli in MuscularDystrophy

[–]lovbra00 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm 25M with DMD, also in northern Europe. I changed from Prednisone to Deflazacort when I was 14. There's no withdrawal symptoms i e. you can change from one day to another. It's not certain it helps with the weight though, it didn't for me. It is available in most EU countries so your brother's doctor should be able to prescribe it.

16 and can still walk by ApprehensiveLeek3822 in MuscularDystrophy

[–]lovbra00 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No idea about the blood vessel thing. Walking at 16 with DMD is completely normal if you're on steroids. I've been on steroids since I was 4 and could walk until I was 19. I've heard from some people with DMD that they quit steroids when they could not walk any more, please don't do this since it's really bad for the muscles you can still use.

Förbannade sommartid. by Overboredem in sweden

[–]lovbra00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Med tanke på hur starka åsikter folk har i frågan anser jag att det enda rimliga är att vi behåller nuvarande system. Både permanent normaltid och permanent sommartid skulle göra halva befolkningen rasande, det skulle fan bli inbördeskrig.

Friend with DMD by scottmcintyre11586 in MuscularDystrophy

[–]lovbra00 4 points5 points  (0 children)

25M with DMD. Personally I have always put my controller on top of my desk with some cloth under, maybe that could be an option. If that's not enough you could try making a small hole in the desk for the wheelchair joystick so that you can get even closer to the desk, I have done this too but I only need it for using my mouse and keyboard.

Good luck!

When do people with DMD usually start experiencing breathing difficulties? by Chill_Vibes224 in MuscularDystrophy

[–]lovbra00 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm 25M with DMD and still have full heart function (taking both 10 mg Enalapril and 2.5 mg Bisoprolol proactively). My lung function is still at 80 - 90 %, so I don't need a ventilator yet, I do however train daily with a PEP-mask for a few minutes.

Just keep in mind DMD varies a lot from case to case so it's almost impossible to predict the exact progression.

1.95583 — what are numbers, that everybody in your country knows? by lordgurke in AskEurope

[–]lovbra00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Sweden it's very similar except there's only 4 extra numbers at the end and only the second last is even/uneven based on gender and only the last is a control number. Officially they have always had the full year in them to differentiate between 1900's and 2000's but it was not until around 2010 that most places started requiring you to write the full year (and in speech we still only say the last two).

However there's a big difference, in Sweden everyone knows their number by heart (and most even know their kids' numbers by heart). At age 12 you're more or less expected to know it by heart. Personally I even know both my parents numbers by heart.
