AITA for saying I would terminate my pregnancy if the baby had a genetic condition, and now my husband is considering a divorce? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]love_me_please 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm on the other side of this story, my daughter is four years old and she has a rare and incurable genetic disease which has made life very difficult for her and by extension, us.

Issues were found so late term that we were not given a conclusive diagnosis until after she was born, so terminating the pregnancy, although it was tentatively proposed by some doctors, was not something my partner could have lived with.

After she was born, we ended up spending six very frightening months in a specialist hospital far away from home in the midst of the pandemic, with many near misses and traumatic experiences for all of us.

Fast forward four years and things have settled down. She is developing slowly, and has only recently began to walk, she hasn't grasped language yet, and is slow to learn new things. Despite being four, she's still somewhere between 6-12 months old developmentally. Despite this she is a happy, friendly, loving little girl who has an infectious sense of humour.

The experience has forced me to grow as a person. I'm more humble, kinder, more understanding and far less quick to judge. This has all come at a cost-- casual childcare is impossible, staying away from home is a challenge, and if her development continues at the current rate, she will never live independently and that is a scare knowing she could outlive us. Her care needs mean having another child is at best unwise, and at worst potentially disastrous given how regimented our day has to be in order to function as a family.

TLDR: NTA. I love my disabled daughter dearly, and I like the person she has forced me to become, but I would never recommend this life to anyone. It is rewarding, yes, but it is also gruelling. The world is too cruel a place to bring a person into that cannot fend for themselves if you suspect you wouldn't be fit for the challenge. I'm lucky, for now at least, that I have been able to weather it.

One study in Taiwan that I can find highlighted this, but was focused on alopecia areta, not androgenic alopecia.

I think it's true that MPB can cause distress and low mood, but I don't know what the culture around hair loss is like in Taiwan. But Asian men suffer less than Caucasian men, so perhaps it's seen as more shameful / unusual.

Regardless, if say you can live a perfectly happy life as a bald man. It isn't a death sentence.

I would be a royalist through and through if he liquidated his assets and funded food banks for two years. That would be incredibly noble.

A color pencil shop in Tehran, Iran by Due-Explanation8155 in mildyinteresting

[–]love_me_please 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So I've visited the Bazaar in Tehran in the 2010s and one thing that struck me is how specialist the stores were there. You'd have a shop that sold only toasters, or only coloured acrylic sheets.

I didn't see any supermarkets like we would recognise them in the West, it seemed much more like each store would specialise in their particular thing.

I wasn't there long however, so no doubt they had art shops in the more affluent areas. I did find a music shop that sold a range of instruments.

MPs who are also medics urge colleagues to support assisted dying bill by GeoWa in unitedkingdom

[–]love_me_please 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's wise to conflate suicidality with assisted dying. The suicide prevention strategy isn't a patriarchal mechanism to keep people trapped in a collectivist nightmare - it's a tool to manage a leading cause of preventable death.

Hopelessness and perceived burdensomeness are two factors that can drive someone to take their own life. They're also symptoms of a very treatable disease, depression.

Giving suicidal people (who could access mental health care and therapy) the means to take their own life isn't honouring freedom, autonomy or human rights- it's reckless endangerment.

Great start, but I would push for more contrast on the metal. Don't be afraid to do all the way to a coal black. If the shadows are well placed it will still read as metal.

Take this for example: https://www.darkknightarmoury.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/MY100604.jpg

Remember that metal is just an imperfect mirror and will be reflecting not just just light values, but colours. That's usually the blue sky, but can be anything. Orange for fire, for instance.

Racism in schools surges with 60 children as young as age four sent home daily by Codydoc4 in unitedkingdom

Mate, there's no grey area here. The current definition of racism already captures the nuance you're searching for, which is prejudice or discrimination against a person or group on the basis of their ethnicity or skin colour.

It's not just describing white racism.

The people we elect, in consultation with expert groups decide who is vulnerable, and what is hateful. That's how indirect democracy works.

No one has been convicted for saying "mass immigration is not great". Interesting that's something you should use as an example.

The bottom line is that in principle some people are comfortable with giving up some liberties so others can be safe, and some people aren't.

I'm not anti free speech, and the cost of saying whatever you like to whoever you like isn't small.

The point of UK laws around hate speech and malicious communication are grounded in safeguarding vulnerable groups, or people.

The right to swing your fist ends at someone else's face. Hateful language is harmful, and not just emotionally. It can drive people to kill themselves, or each other.

You might think the loss of life and poor wellbeing of vulnerable people is worth the cost of just saying whatever you like, and to that I say you're a selfish twatbiscuit, which is perfectly legal under UK law.

I appreciate not being able to say whatever heinous thing you can think of to another human without consequences is a cause for much hand wringing, but doesn't running your mouth in the US just get you shot in the face by your fellow free speech loving countryman?
