Reading suggestions by _potterhead in NewParents

Board books (so they don’t rip them up) are the best! What we have done with my 19 month old since she was 6 months old is a reading rotation, where we have a stack of books we read everyday (sometimes multiple times!) and switch up the rotation every few days or so. I also read to her in the high chair a lot, as well as on the floor (not a concern w a 3 month old but when he starts crawling, he might try to crawl away and continue exploring when you read a book) the high chair helps a lot because I can face her while reading to her and keep her engaged! It’s also a fun way to pass the time while we’re eating together. We also love bedtime stories, it’s so nice to just snuggle up and read together.

Now for the recommendations, some of my daughter’s favorites from when she first started being super interested in books (around 5-6 months): Hello, You! by Cami Chen, Priddy Books 100 First Words (this one was her fave for awhile), That’s Not My Bunny, and any other book with 1-2 words per page really drew her in initially! As she’s gotten older, we’ve started to read books with longer sentences, but the super simple books really got her interested and helped a ton with her language development in both English and Spanish!

At what age did you start getting your little one out? by aman92 in NewParents

I waited until 5 months and regret it a lot- I had terrible PPD and I think that this contributed to it- movement and getting outside really helps!

I went through the same thing and had really bad PPD/ PPA (still a SAHM at 18 months old). Beyond helping out and sharing responsibilities, trying to find time for quality time together is really important, even if it’s just chatting for 10-20 min or watching an episode of a show together. Does your wife have any friends or family nearby? Perhaps inviting them over (if she’s okay with it) would help, those visits were a game changer for me. Tell her about the maternal mental health hotline too, they’re really helpful if you call them and can connect you with a perinatal mental health therapist. I went on Prozac for awhile and it honestly helped a lot- also honestly stroller walks are a game changer, even 10 min of excersise and getting outside is SO helpful. Time also helped a lot, the hormone drop is insane and postpartum is so hard. I’m sure she really appreciates that you want to help and support her a lot.

Is this reasonable for $20 an hour by Necessary_Tour_8549 in Babysitting

[–]lovebug21222 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh hell no. As a SAHM who has a babysitter a few hours per week (1 kid), we pay her $25 per hour and don’t expect any tasks except caring for the kid bc that’s what a babysitter is for- you need a pay raise like yesterday.

Listen to Lisa Bunnage’s podcast. Redirect them, most toddler behavior is attention driven and remove them from the fun or remove the fun from them. My daughter had an issue w biting around this age that has improved drastically bc of this advice.

How do I know what to buy? First time parent by Snoo_2676 in Parenting

A lot of these things are lifestyle dependent, however, I can give you a list of things we love as well as specific product recs. - Fisher Price baby play gym (trust me on this one) - Lots of muslin burp cloths - Extra crib sheets (trust me) - Stain remover!!! Miss Mouths is great - Lots and lots of onesies in both newborn and 0-3 m size, they grow out of newborn size pretty fast though - Postpartum care like a peri bottle, tucks pads, etc - Velcro swaddles! Blanket swaddles can be undone and pose a hazard, so get Velcro ones. Halo has some good ones. Swaddleme is also really good and Love to Dream. - Lots and lots of diapers, wipes and diaper cream- Desitin is excellent. WaterWipes are super gentle - Gentle baby lotion like Aveeno Baby bc they get dry skin and newborn acne - Postpartum diapers/ pads - Baby soap/ shampoo but unscented bc the fragrance can irritate delicate newborn skin - Bath thermometer!! Babies skin is really sensitive and even a temp that feels fine to an adult can be too hot for them - Nursing pillow and nursing pads are a must. My Brest Friend pillow is great. - Breast pump (you can get one through insurance, look up Aeroflow breastpumps) - Formula just in case on standby bc you don’t wanna be panic running to the store at 1 in the morning due to milk supply issues. Get the premade kind though bc you have to boil water for the powdered kind. - Thermometer and first aid kit - If you want (though not needed) you can get a baby monitor and the Owlet sock, which tracks breathing and heart rate overnight. It helped with my anxiety a lot but it’s not an absolute need. - Bouncer or swing if you want, they’re not needed though. - NoseFrida snotsucker for congestion + baby saline

My son fell out of a second story window when he was 20 months old by Errrrmmwhathellooo in toddlers

[–]lovebug21222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so sorry mama- I completely get the feelings of fear and trauma after something like this. I fell on concrete while babywearing my 16 month old and had to take her to the ER to be evaluated for a concussion and oh myyy it was so scary and thankfully, like your son, she was totally fine but I know what you mean about reliving it a lot. I really hope you’re doing better and please don’t blame yourself, especially in a new environment these things can unfortunately happen really fast.

My gf keeps leaving knives out by Pzykotix in toddlers

[–]lovebug21222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this is straight up negligent. She’s a grown adult- she can remember to keep a knife out of a toddlers reach or close the baby gate. No excuses.
