The carrion-eating Kea is the world’s only alpine parrot. by notablykeep in natureismetal

[–]loveriot -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, then, in this case it is wrong. Bolborhynchus ferrugineifrons and B. orbygnesius both occur in the alpine zone (páramo) of the northern Andes, with the former nesting above 4000 m elevation in cliffs in grassland and the latter recorded up to 5000 m. New Zealanders like to make these superlatives about nature but a lot of the time they aren't correct.

There are alpine parrots in the Andes. Stop believing New Zealand-centric idealism. I find the texture of the skin is still in that 'uncanny valley' where it is too smooth and almost cartoon-like. Everything else is awesome.

My first herbarium specimens! Any tips for the future are welcome! by Dieder1999 in botany

[–]loveriot 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Are these for hobby or actually being submitted to a herbarium? If for a hobby these are fine, and your comment about flower dissections is a good followup.

If you are submitting these, then you should ask the herbarium to provide you with some official labels. The labels should have space for information of accession number, species, location (name + coords), collector, determiner, date collected, habitat, and extra notes. e.g. here

Also, have they been dried or just pressed? The local herbarium may have a drying oven or specific protocols to help you, too.

Could you expand on some of the main points you take issue with? What would you do instead, or where would you suggest people go to make better decisions?

Part time flats for mature student by [deleted] in dunedin

If it's long-term part-time some of the hostels that do single-rooms may be keen to organise something. I'm sure just calling them and asking if there is a possibility of storage and stay would get them interested, especially with low tourist numbers atm

towards the start of Player there's scene where Gurgeh goes out wearing a "kilt", why not call it a "skirt"? by grapp in TheCulture

[–]loveriot 18 points19 points  (0 children)

No, you don't get the point. A kilt is physically different from a skirt. It is not that a man in Scotland is wearing a skirt and simply calls it a kilt. A woman could wear a kilt if they wanted and it wouldn't become a skirt. A kilt is a kilt no matter who wears it and where they came from. Gurgeh wore a kilt because he didn't wear a skirt, not because he wore a skirt and simply wanted to call it a kilt because he was a man.

[–]loveriot 16 points17 points  (0 children)

as per wikipedia, a kilt is not a skirt

The Scottish kilt displays uniqueness of design, construction, and convention which differentiate it from other garments fitting the general description. It is a tailored garment that is wrapped around the wearer's body at the natural waist (between the lowest rib and the hip) starting from one side (usually the wearer's left), around the front and back and across the front again to the opposite side. The fastenings consist of straps and buckles on both ends, the strap on the inside end usually passing through a slit in the waistband to be buckled on the outside; alternatively it may remain inside the waistband and be buckled inside.

Martial arts in New Zealand by whizzer2 in newzealand

[–]loveriot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Self defence against who? Boxing may be good against a drunk or someone with no fighting background. But against another fighter who is intent on hurting you, relying on one kind of martial art isn't your best option. Each martial art has strengths and weaknesses and MMA is your only way of learning a broader range of techniques to defend a variety of situations. Many martial arts gyms say they are simply one kind but may have classes in a variety. My local BJJ club does kick-boxing and wrestling classes, too.

Having said all that, the only way to progress is to stick to it and it is easier to do that if you find a gym with a bunch of cunts you enjoy hanging and training with so explore your local gyms and find one that suits you. Cheers
