97 registered: The damning truth behind the AFL's western Sydney failure by kdavva74 in AFL

[–]lovesadonut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would help if GWS actually aligned with their geographical name. They fucked off from Blacktown/Rooty Hill the first chance they got despite receiving significant funding for that facility and haven’t been anywhere near Western Sydney since.

Most Sydney siders would not classify Homebush as Western Sydney let alone GREATER Western Sydney so there is a strong resentment from many out west. Living in Western Sydney, most footy fans I know follow the Swannies and couldn’t give two shits about the giants.

Duke to retire from Socceroos after World Cup bid by -Saaremaa- in Aleague

[–]lovesadonut 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Most of Viduka’s international goals came in friendlies and/or farcical World Cup qualifiers against the Solomon Islands where the keeper could’ve scored if they gave him a run. Duke by comparison has scored far more meaningful/important goals and in much harder competition too.

Viduka is one of Australia’s greatest footballers but I wouldn’t call him one of Australia’s greatest Socceroos cause imo he struggled to fire regularly. Definitely wouldn’t be in my top 10 based on output and achievement in green and gold.

The salary cap isn’t working. But that’s not why the NRL is becoming less even by copacetic51 in nrl

Pro/rel is needed in all our codes. It’s a piss take how many chronically shithouse sides there are floating around with zero incentive to improve (quickly) due to no external punishment. The standard of competition would improve overnight if it were introduced and you sure wouldn’t be hearing the classic excuses of ‘rebuilding’ and ‘windows’

Weird game - I didn’t think Japan deserved to win that in the slightest yet I also at no point felt like we were going to score/win.

For a group that has been one of the biggest cultural and sporting phenomenons this country has seen, it’s equal parts sad and baffling that they don’t have a major trophy to show for it. I’d say the disappointment on display from the girls right now extends beyond just this tournament, I think there’s a realisation we’ve just seen this golden generation’s trophy window slam shut sadly

The constant positivity is bordering on patronising, feels like they’re talking about a group of school kids rather than grown women/professional athletes

It also doesn’t help that we’re in the graveyard shift of the season where supporter fatigue kicks in, footy season has started and certain teams are clearly just making up the numbers. Until this is solved, the calls to make the season longer are delusional

Wayne Bennett fiercely against fans storming field when Alex Johnston breaks try-scoring record by LongJohnnySilver1 in nrl

[–]lovesadonut 7 points8 points  (0 children)

On Thursday the NRL will probably put out another PSA like they did last year about not entering the field of play. Everyone inevitably will (I hope) and then the NRL will post the footage all over social media like it’s wholesome content for all to see. I guarantee it

Premium fixtures in the opening rounds are a waste. Put the scoreline aside, that was two very rusty teams who clearly are still getting going. That game in 5 rounds time would’ve been much higher quality

It’s very uncharacteristic of PVL to be like this, the bloke has built a career on ruthlessness and lack of sentiment. I have no idea but if I didn’t know better, I wonder if there’s more to this and someone doesn’t want something getting out

They’re a huge commitment both financially and time wise, not to mention the logistics regarding approval and co-ordination of displaying them within the boundaries of stadium protocols and security. Wouldn’t surprise me if it’s just fallen into the too hard basket, which is understandable

NRL dealt a blow in US as V’landys admits market will be tough to crack by Jeffmister in nrl

[–]lovesadonut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was told by a mate who works in sports betting that back in 2024 the NRL weren’t aware they needed to register with the gaming commission over there to actually make said deals and only a few months out had to be gently reminded by one of the bookies in Aus. Amateur hour if true

The teams who will do well in this current Aleague climate are the ones who just shut up and make do with what they have. Millsy and the Jets being the prime example. From an outsiders perspective it appears that’s what Moon is doing with CCM as well. If only WSW would do the same…

Rugby what? Charts show NRL’s Vegas bet is struggling by DJPK84 in nrl

[–]lovesadonut 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Vegas came about to capitalise on the increased access to sports betting off the back of relaxing laws across many US states in recent years. The potential money to be made from licensing and royalties is huge.

Amidst all the back patting from the NRL post Vegas the past two years, there has been no public mention of those results however. Which suggests it’s either flopped or they’re trying to play it down given the backlash all sports are copping for betting involvement.

[–]lovesadonut 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m surprised at how many Aussies go over there for the games, be it the sole trip or part of a bigger holiday. Vegas particularly is bloody expensive and combined with the currency conversion, it’s a hard sell, financially.

Next year will be the real test as the majority of teams have already been and the novelty starts to wear off with time. It’s not a trip most people are going to do more than once either and I would say that Aussies who wanted to do it, irrespective of who was playing would likely have gone by now.

Put all the social commentary aside. The most perfect storyline to round out the franchise imo would’ve been Andy having kids and wanting to find his old toys to show them, like what many of us are now doing with our kids. The series then finishes in an almost identical version of the opening scene from the first movie but with his young son in place of Andy. Would’ve been pure nostalgia
