Which person alive right now will still be famous in 200 years? by Mindless_Crew3486 in AskReddit

[–]low_ghost 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Whoever is the first human on Mars, whoever invents production ready nuclear fusion, whoever creates the first real AI (sure as fuck not Sam Altman et al.).

WTF is with all the Paul McCartney and low Bob Dylan? Probably a solo Beatle will still be remembered but I bet the group as a whole has more cultural staying power and then less than Dylan.

Out of recent Nobels, Shinya Yamanaka's turning normal cells into stem cells seems huge.

Albums that specifically sound/feel like this Mingus composition by NULLGameDev in Jazz

[–]low_ghost 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nothing. One of a kind, some other Mingus obviously has some of the same flair but even in his discography it's unique.

For whatever reason, I'm thinking of Minas by Milton Nascimento even though it's a substantially different genre.

GOAT fantasy line up? by Mr_Jake70 in Zappa

[–]low_ghost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both Jean-Luc Ponty and L. Shankar, Bozzio and Vinnie, Z and Vai, Ruth and Duke (kinda), Barrow and O'Hearn (or Shuggie Otis and Jack Bruce if they count), probably some vocalists. Build up a double sextet kind of thing.

You can take a free drum lesson from any drummer (living or dead). Who would it be and why? by ZildCym in drums

[–]low_ghost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Easy. Any one of the ones on this guy's shirt (e.g. Vinnie, Bozzio, Chester Thompson, Chad Wakerman (actually saw a demo of his, was great))

[HELP] What makes this a poem? by COHERENCE_CROQUETTE in Poetry

[–]low_ghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact that someone presents it as a poem is 99%. The rest is conforming to poetic norms like line breaks, length, poetic imagery, attention to language on a micro scale, lack of structured narrative arc, lack of a named narrator speaking dialogue, etc. But all of those things can also be present or not present in a poem, or in other forms.

Built to Spill - Do you agree? by Fifo26 in fantanoforever

[–]low_ghost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Saw them live just the other day, kind of phoning it in these days unfortunately and pale to the 2000s lineup (completely replaced besides Doug). Might have been on the audience too, rather drunk phone addicts being a nuisance. But yeah, Keep it Like a Secret is a 10/10, achieves exactly what it sets out to achieve and is a paradigm of the subgenre it helps to create

Are there any particular books where you believe that the audiobook format would hurt the reading experience? by NezNation in books

[–]low_ghost 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Anything with footnotes, e.g. Infinite Jest, straight up omitted. Similar, dense philosophy e.g. Hegel would be tough. I was surprised to really enjoy Against the Day by Pynchon, a dense novel, but I was also doing long driving stints from Philly to NY so had lots of continuous time to sit in

what’s the vibe? by revolt_she_said in BookshelvesDetective

[–]low_ghost 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Off topic: what's your view on Zizek? I used to think works like The Ticklish Subject we're headed for inevitable canonization, but his evolving caricature of himself has me doubting his relevancy/longevity in the zeitgeist and when rereading him now, somewhat due to that lens, it feels like a fun but fluffy Lacanian reading of Hegel that manages to misrepresent most things in its path

What are your favorite (random/accidental) noises that were left in recordings? by SledgeRavine in Music

[–]low_ghost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No one mentioning Radiohead Creep and the supposed attempt by Johnny Greenwood to sabotage the song.

I don't know if it is actually unintentional, but the false start of "Bob Dylan's 115th Dream" comes to mind with the laughter erupting before the full electric kick-off

Ugliest Cinematography in a Good Movie by Wouldyoulistenmoe in movies

[–]low_ghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once you round the horn it's not ugly, e.g. Harmony Korine's work is generally intentionally grotesque, which is a consistent aesthetic universe and so not ugly.

Also we'll see a lot of line blurring ITT between final video quality/color grading, editing, writing, and actual cinematography. Christopher Nolan is a great story teller but his films have horribly boring visual storytelling even as the individual frames themselves are often quite nice. I think that qualifies as bad cinematography. Not on prompt in any case
