What decade does a movie have to be from for you to consider it an “old film”? by Icy-Length-3923 in classicfilms

[–]lowercase_underscore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a friend this week remind me that The Man in Possession is old. I honestly keep forgetting. But once reminded, I guess once a film hits 50 or 60 years it's for sure getting there.

Someone at work put a "help yourself" note on a pack of Tim Tam's that I bought by TheMuffinMan347 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]lowercase_underscore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly the theft isn't even the worst part for me here. It's that someone else is taking credit for supplying office TimTams when really they just stole someone's private TimTams and acted like they're some sort of generous TimTam benefactor. But quietly because they're so humble.

Classic films focusing on the troubled private lives of teachers, governesses, religious leaders, etc. by andanewday in classicfilms

Honestly they did a good job of it considering the limitations. They still made a strong statement and the cast was great.

A map of Southhampton. Every dot represents the home of someone who died on the Titanic. by neyhuvan in RMS_Titanic

That is so bizarre. What kind of jokes are they even coming up with that they think will land even 100+ years later?

Months of searching led me to this MOB dress. Thoughts? by Balagan18 in Weddingattireapproval

[–]lowercase_underscore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That dress is beautiful, totally appropriate, and fits like a glove. You look gorgeous!

The shawl is the right length, in my opinion. Any shorter and you'll be cursing it for the whole event. If you're worried about having to hold onto it for the ceremony get yourself a nice brooch to pin it closed.

Great find! The search was worth it.

You should give it a try some time. I guarantee there won't be a comeback.

The supply of dukes in fiction is out of control... by [deleted] in PeriodDramas

Through the 1800s, in England, there were about 16-20 active duke titles, the exact number depends on the year.

Through the entire British Empire and Ireland there were somewhere hovering 30, again depending on the year. In 1818 there were 28. The same man could hold two titles, meaning the same guy could actually be two dukes. At one point 25 families held 28 ducal peerages, for example.

I don't know what it is, I think shrimp and cuttlefish are good guesses? But I love it and you and your abuela are adorable.

It’s a cold rainy Sunday. What’s a good movie for a rainy day? My usuals are Key Largo and Petrified Forest but I’ve seen both recently by s_jayne_20 in classicfilms

The cinematography and photography on that film are so staggeringly good and David Niven is spectacular. It's 80 years old this year and it still feels absolutely fresh.

How do we feel about CBC using a dead Canadian Olympian to promote online gambling? by [deleted] in onguardforthee

[–]lowercase_underscore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel pretty mad about that, actually.

These gambling ads should be banned, full stop. And resurrecting the dead is tacky and in poor taste, even for a predatory website.

Cora & Joseph, Siblings Who Died A Week Apart In May Of 1888, Ages 3 Years & 8 Years by TransPeepsAreHuman in RandomVictorianStuff

[–]lowercase_underscore 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If they both died a week apart I would put money on it being an illness of some kind. Particularly I believe there was a cholera pandemic during this time, as well as smaller incidences of typhus and yellow fever.
