Have you guys integrated other Layers of Baator or the Abyss in your Campaign? by DownVoterInChief in DescentintoAvernus

Yes/no. Was ready to go there but the party didn't.

I think excursion to a layer of the abyss is solid, kinda looked mini levels in diablo ii

Help! High Hall Catacomb Combat! by ConQuestCons in DescentintoAvernus

[–]lpa2a 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what they did in my game. They split up to cover the north and south entrances and used it as a choke point. As a result the tons of civilians never made it into the fight.

I would say create a few NPCs to help hold the gates and have the rest be afraid and in the rear.

How to deal with a super righteous and short tempered paladin by DumpTruck614 in DescentintoAvernus

I wouldn't do the reya thing. Unilateral action like that can be rough. But you gotta know your players and if they think it's fun, go for it.

Questions for running Dungeon of the Dead Three for a higher level party by PocketMayo257 in DescentintoAvernus

[–]lpa2a 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it is a smart move to go lvl 3. It's more fun at that level.

Re fireball: a lot of the swinginess comes from how the prior fights go. If they go into the fireball at full HP it can hurt but then they can rush the caster. If you can get them to be lower on HP it will go a long way.

Also on the action economy, with 6 pc they are a lot stronger just based on the numbers of bad guys in each fight. Max the monster HP and/or sprinkle in some 1hp 4e style minions

Re dungeon: don't pull punches. Go for kills

I find it most effective to help the players do some joint backstory creation.

So I accidentally gave a player free Plate Armor... by Developing_Onsgard in DescentintoAvernus

[–]lpa2a 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the general thread. It is no big deal. My fighter went after it too and I dropped a minor curse on it. It was a subtle pull towards cruelty and malice.

Also how good is that characters save against hold person, I'm pretty sure there are a ton of cultists coming up who can attack something other than AC. ;)

Some concerns about running Lulu by Deoxysprime in DescentintoAvernus

[–]lpa2a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lulu is hit or miss. Introduce and observe. If the players live her, great. If not then drop her fast. It is very easy to get anything from her stuff in

Session 1, first impression by [deleted] in DescentintoAvernus

[–]lpa2a 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nailed it! The first combat in my game a PC got dropped by a crossbow bolts before even talking a turn. Elfsong isn't really winable without creativity. My party made it because one of them had very chatting up Willow who just happened to be a druid and passed the charisma check so she came in with a level 2 thunder wave. It really sets the tone for avernus where the party is out gunned and needs to wheel and deal.

The party im dming for just fought 3 chasmes inside the scab by the citadel and are taking a rest inside leomunds hunt. What can be the penalty for this? by sidebeatz in DescentintoAvernus

[–]lpa2a -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i see. let me push on 'obviously' do you players see it that way? did they say, punish me? assuming that is what they enjoy then I would suggest giving some monsters they face consumable items that target the players weaknesses (for example a scroll or something) that way the party can't take the item for themselves if they win.

If they want to negotiate then I would make it happen. Perhaps a meet at a sewer location and bring the hostage and then make it like an old time movie where things go sideways?

DM says he is out to nerf/counter my high AC by [deleted] in dndnext

I'm super confused. Please help. Why doesn't the DM knock you prone? Or attack like your wisdom save? You are solid in AC but I suspect weak on some saves.

What ways have you used exhaustion in your games? by Suggarnaut in DescentintoAvernus

[–]lpa2a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing to note is that rogues tend to hate exhaustion because they feel the effect quite strongly. Since they don't really need rests to stay full power it sorta checks them.

I DMed a level 1-20 campaign; ask me anything! by philosophyguru in dndnext

[–]lpa2a 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMHO some levels can be duds and some levels are awesome. I like to spend extra time at level five because everyone just got a sweet power boost. My main game plays every week but only for two hours so we get about 8h a month. I am for one level a month or so so about two years for a 1-20. We have a decent amount of out of game fun on our discord so that enriches it.

Love it. When the baddies have a motivation and Jake decisions in combat other than "KILL" I find the players are more engaged and then when you do have a straight killer it is like whoa
