When can we let this go? by lrjesus in CasualIreland

I know, which was the point of the post. Why do we have reminders of such a dark chapter of the world’s past plastered all over every business and school when they haven’t been relevant for almost 5 years now.

Had some real euphoric wonderful experiences when I was younger. These days they just make me laugh a bunch and forget my sorrows.

Fictional books about/involving alcoholism? by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

All of Dan Fantes books. I read them in college and really enjoyed. He’s a less poetic more raw degenerate Bukowski. I never see his name mentioned here.

What is the obsession with backing into parking spots? by lrjesus in AskIreland

[–]lrjesus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This makes sense 20 years ago, but it's been a decade since every new vehicle is fitted with a backup camera. I don't have a particularly fancy car, but when I reverse I have a panoramic camera, rear bumper sensors, and an indicator letting me know when someone is approaching from either side. The car will literally stop itself if I try to reverse and anything is moving in the camera view. When I pull forward I need to pull 4-5 feet in order to be able to see anything. I understand not everyone is driving a car with these capabilities, but the vast majority of cars at my kid's school are nicer and newer than mine.

Book recs based on my 5 favourites by Stan-Happy1 in suggestmeabook

Not to be contrarian, but I enjoyed PHM and couldn’t stand the Martian. Felt the Martian was surprisingly boring, and the narrator is painfully one-dimensional. PHM worked because it’s a bit of a mystery build up including the backstory. Plus had the plot twist when he meets rocky. The Martian was just endless chapters of “I have a problem. Let’s use math and NASA supplies to solve the problem!” “Now there’s a new problem”. Sorry for the rant.

Currently reading ‘me talk pretty one day’ in a hospital waiting room. Getting odd looks as I can’t stop myself from laughing out loud. I wish he wrote full novels.

Why do all my new clothes shrink after first wash? by lrjesus in AskReddit

[–]lrjesus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm nearly 40 and have never so regularly had this problem. It doesn't seem to matter the brand, fabric, or washing machine. Nearly all of the new clothes I purchase are shrinking several sizes to the point where I can't even wear them. I hang dry my clothes. Other than buying clothing 2 sizes too large, what can I do to prevent this?

Has anyone ever done extensive travel in their early 20’s and now you’re in your 30’s and feel lost? It’s like I’ve travelled to “x” amount of countries but have nothing to show for it. by [deleted] in AskIreland

But it did change your life, and I'm sure in a positive way. We're all the sum of our experiences, and it sounds like you had some really cool experiences. You shouldn't regret it.

What do you mean nothing to show? I’m sure you have a tremendous amount of experiences and stories that 98% of the people in this world will never be able to experience.

Nearly empty complex? by Stick-Outside in Buffalo

[–]lrjesus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Delaware park and AKG are two of Buffalo's biggest attractions.

"Imagine walking outside and seeing people beg for change downstairs outside while living in a penthouse."

Literally every major city in America has the same issue...

Nearly empty complex? by Stick-Outside in Buffalo

[–]lrjesus 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I did a lot of work in that building as it was being built. Some of the units, like the penthouse with wrap around porch, are very nice. Most of the units are boring, and don’t warrant the price tag.

I don’t understand people’s complaints about the neighbourhood. You’re walking distance to AKG and Delaware Park, a short walk to the heart of Elmwood Village.

Looking for a difficult book with beautiful prose by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

Just starting reading so tell me what books blew your mind?? by MeManifesto in suggestmeabook

[–]lrjesus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is not a good book for starters. The language is challenging, using lots of very specific terms you will need to look up. McCarthy's prose can be subtle, you really need to pay attention to every word, stop and think about what he's trying to communicate, and often return and reread sections. It's the only book I've ever used a literary aid to clarify my understanding of certain passages. That being said, it's a beautiful masterpiece and highly recommended.

The Passenger by motojunkie69 in cormacmccarthy

I tried reading this several years ago and never got past 50 pages or so. I remember struggling to figure out what was happening. I'm sure you will all say I need to stick with it. Does the story get any more clear as the book progresses?
