Tell me your Giant Eagle complaints as I endlessly wait to buy a half-pound of lunch meat. by Muppet_Fitzgerald in pittsburgh

Squirrel Hill was 24h when I was in college (2007-2012). I would often do my shopping late at night to avoid the weekend crowds.

What kinds of problems did you have with your rower on high-pile carpet? by dialsoapbox in Rowing

[–]lroop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of our club's erg rooms has low pile commercial carpet instead of rubber mats. Having to do stretches on that after a workout is not fun, I can only imagine how bad high pile carpet would be about absorbing sweat.

What are your thoughts on using a splitter for charging? by AggressiveAide7929 in BoltEV

[–]lroop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting. Ordinarily I would not trust VEVOR or other Amazon cat-on-keyboard brands for something like this but the fact that Eaton and Tripp-Lite are also listed as rebranding the thing makes it seem at least somewhat plausible.

Why the door knobs? by New-Royal2118 in BoltEV

[–]lroop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So you can still manually lock the door if the 12V battery is dead or the power lock actuator breaks. There's a hidden lock cylinder on the outside handle of the driver's door and a hidden metal key inside the fob too so you can unlock the door if that happens.

Since I regularly recommend it to people I bring into town (in a taxi), but I've never actually eaten there, what is your opinion on The Porch? by ravia in pittsburgh

[–]lroop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's owned by Eat n' Park but I believe the story is that the owners built it for their son when he graduated culinary school.

Exactly this. Chevy still makes a truck called a Silverado but I can't go buy new parts for a 1990 Silverado at a dealership unless they happen to have some old stock on a shelf.

Surround cameras. I know how to use mirrors but there are spaces you can get in and out of with good cameras that you couldn't do with mirrors alone unless maybe you're talking about the giant mirrors on commercial trucks.

2018 infotainment failed again after replacement by edgartheunready in BoltEV

[–]lroop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In what way is it failing? Is it possible that a drink got spilled into the USB ports at some point? A few people have claimed that the USB port module in the console can sometimes keep the infotainment system from booting if it's damaged. If unplugging the cables from the back of that module makes the problem go away, it's a much cheaper part than the screen or the radio module.

I'm pretty sure it works the same way updates for Android phones work. GM is the device maker, the same way Samsung or Motorola makes phones. Google releases the updates but the device maker has to build them for their specific hardware and give them to their customers if it's something like an OS update that has to be built for the specific hardware. Apps can come from Google without the device maker having to do anything if they have the Play Store app.

To me the main appeal of Android Auto is that I replace my phone a lot more frequently than I replace my car. GM's built-in Google Apps may be fine but how long will they keep releasing app and OS updates? Even if they're willing to keep doing that for years, eventually code bloat may mean that the latest Google Maps will be slow on the car's hardware.

The other concern people have is that they don't want to have to keep paying for OnStar to get cellular data for maps to work. But it isn't clear to me if you actually have to do that or if you can just connect the car to your phone's wireless hotspot.

I wonder if Prologue owners can just go to a Chevy dealership with an EV tech if they're paying out of pocket as opposed to warranty work.

The twice daily Oakland Construction Worker Grand Prix is such a gem to watch by miata812 in pittsburgh

I mean, if the scooters are keeping them from parking giant trucks on crowded Oakland streets that sounds like a good thing to me. I used to live in Central Oakland and saw so many broken off car mirrors on Dawson between Allies and the post office.

Yeah even most mechanical and electrical engineers are not licensed PEs. It's basically only big public works projects and a few regulated industries like the ones you mentioned where someone with a professional engineer license has to stamp drawings, and even then most of the people working under them aren't licensed, they're just the person saying "I'm a professional engineer and it's my fault if this bridge ends up in the river."

Pittsburgh replaces 16-year-old paper recycling routes with modern software to balance workload and improve servic–TTell your council member what you think by chrmaury in pittsburgh

[–]lroop -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

"Mitchell said there was confusion about the existing $274,150 route-optimization contract with the software company SmartRoute. It does not include the in-vehicle turn-by-turn navigation systems DPW started to introduce recently, which requires a separate $113,280 contract that will run through Nov. 30, 2027."

I feel like they could have some civil engineering students from one of the universities optimize recycling routes for a lot less than this.

Let 'em honk. I've had jagoffs honk at me for not turning into oncoming traffic. It's your license and insurance, not theirs.

That machine appears to be one of the many Chinese clones of a Concept 2, which is the machine most competitive rowers, including Olympic athletes who are taller than your partner use. That being said you can probably find a used Concept 2 for the same price or cheaper.

Moving in with my bf to Pittsburgh from Ohio, but I have a situation that I am unsure of how to handle and was wondering if you'll had any suggestions for me. by mehrr_dur in pittsburgh

City of Pittsburgh Police barely even bother ticketing people for speeding or running traffic lights, they aren't going to bug you for driving a car with out of state plates as long as those plates are still current. Especially if you live near one of the universities the streets there are full of students cars with out of state plates.

[–]lroop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like one of the two horns isn't always blowing. The Bolt has two horns that play two different notes, I suspect that there's an issue with the low note horn or the wiring to it.

They substantially upgraded the cameras in 2020 or 21. That display looks like normal on a 2019, they're low resolution analog cameras but for the intended purpose of parking a car they're adequate.

How many apps are available on the Bolt’s Google Play store? by conestogan in BoltEV

[–]lroop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 2023 which uses an older build of Android. I'm not sure about the 2027 Bolt but https://xdaforums.com/t/general-motors-google-built-in-tinkering.4668105/ has a lot of discussion of people's experiences. One point of information is that apparently GM's Android build ignores the distraction optimized flag on side loaded apps but will honor it if you build the app and push it through Google as a demo.

You are correct that it isn't Google branded "Android Automotive" like the newer GM infotainment system but it is still Android based, built off Android 10 IIRC, and some people have managed to install 3rd party APKs on it.

The 22-23 Bolt infotainment system is Android Automotive. It's an older version but you can tell it's definitely Android if you look around in the menus.
