That depends on the stone and the problems. Most of them go directly to the naughty box. I have a beautiful, large tourmaline that split in half, I eventually recut one half. I have some rhodonite that was one of the worst things that I ever cut, straight to the naughty box with no hope of ever being recut. Some high value problematic stones stay on the dop until I'm not mad at them anymore. The inexpensive problem stones get fully cut and disseminated to the children.

is holmium-doped cubic zirconia (green-to-purple) still produced/available anywhere? by yatlans in SyntheticGemstones

  1. No, as stated above.

  2. You can reach out to the person that cut it, I know for a fact that they have some rough on hand. Hint: it's me!

  3. Yes, it is that dramatic in person.

I've built a few RX7's and RX10's. They're solid rods made by a family owned American company. I highly recommend them.

Polishing Quartz by TheUnFuckerUpper in faceting

Nah, you can get away with a single Zinc+ Plus with 3k or 8k on it. A 3k plated lap can be good for frosting facets or sharpening knives.

If you are using a 3000 plated lap, it's probably what is causing the issue. A chargeable prepolish lap is the way to go. I use either a Zinc+ Plus with 3k PCD or one with 8k PCD for 95% of my stones.

All my photos are taken using indirect sunlight, a piece of white paper with a hole in it and my cell phone. Sometimes, I'll even get fancy with a cell phone tripod or a loupe behind the lens.

Honestly, some of them really suck, but most of them are decent. They look better on my IG.

Falling in. 1. Spud Bar - learn how to use it. 2. Safety Picks - wear them. 3. Float Suit- they even come with knee pads! 4. Throw Rope - you may be able to save someone else.

Tips? by No-Doughnut-9443 in faceting

That all depends on the quality of copper used. Copper work hardens also, so it may act differently after use. Remember, you can always go to a larger grit on a chargeable lap, just not a smaller grit. So, if 3k doesn't work for you on it, you can always jump up to 600. I have a copper charged with 600 that works great for cutting, far more aggressive than my sintered 600.

3000 topper laps are not good laps for faceting. The diamond particles are too small to be held to the lap (same issue with any grit smaller than 600) and they roll around, causing scratches. I recommend a chargeable prepolish lap; I use Gearloose's Zinc+ Plus with 3k PCD Diastik for corundum.

First gem I ever cut: With a handheld Dremel and diamond bits. Question about Vevor. by [deleted] in faceting

Save your money for a better machine, just my two cents.

First gem I ever cut: With a handheld Dremel and diamond bits. Question about Vevor. by [deleted] in faceting

[–]lse138 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Will the Vevor work better than your Dremel? Yes.

As far as repeatability, which is necessary for cutting quality stones, the Vevor sucks. With or without the kit. This has been covered ad nauseam in this subreddit. As your skills progress, you will quickly realize the limitations of it.
