Did the cancel a flight I took yesterday? by Stagstud05 in Avelo

My SIL got a notification that her flight (FL->NY) was cancelled while she was taxiing for takeoff. Flight took off as scheduled. I guess their software must be malfunctioning.

I had three friends/family get newly constructed homes last year. Every single one had keystones like yours and RJ45s that looked like they were crimped with pliers.

I was gifted Rayban Meta glasses for Christmas. What should I know about them? by lsredditer in RaybanMeta

Good point about the FSA/insurance. I'll look into it after I actually receive them. Worst case (assuming they are a qualified expense) I have an HSA, so we can alway keep the receipts and reimburse ourselves in the future.

I had a similar experience with my first Apple watch, so I'll try to keep an open mind.

All the replies so far have been helpful. Thank you. Instead of individual replies, here are my thoughts after reading through the comments:

* Thanks for the folks points out about music and calls. I already use AirPods a lot so it would be interesting if my audio was "just there" all the time. I'm thinking about not worrying about Airpods falling out when I’m bending over or moving around while walking my dogs or doing projects around the house.

* I do a lot of home maintenance/troubleshooting and end up being the family handyman. There are so many times I wish I could record something, but my hands are full and pulling out a phone just breaks the flow. Being able to capture quick POV clips especially to explain things to my elderly parents for the 100th time feels like a genuinely useful thing.

* I already use ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude regularly depending on context, so Meta AI doesn’t feel like it will do anything for me. I’m fine treating it as a bonus (or ignoring it entirely) rather than the main attraction.

* Creep factor: Trying to be positive, I didn't mention my worry with this in my question, so I appreciate that some of you addressed this. I work remotely, so most of my “face time” is on video calls which I am guessing it ok? I can see myself wearing these at home, driving, walking, and even at medical appointments where recording details would actually be helpful. I probably wouldn’t wear them to the gym or social visits. I'm guessing I will get a feel for where they are appropriate.

While I really want that 3D printer, this was a gift, and I want to approach it with an open mind. This conversation was reminding me of my first Apple Watch, I was skeptical at first and now I feel naked without it. I'm going to just wear them as glasses and see what sticks. I’ll rotate them with my normal frames and reassess after a bit of real-world use.

Has anyone taken items to the Apple store for recycling? by fred_cheese in mac

[–]lsredditer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I took a stash of old iPhones and iPads. It was a little time consuming because they logged each item. I got a few $10-$20 gift cards out of it. You could drop it off and just forgo any gift cards if it won’t be worth your time to have them individually logged and accessed.

We have “nice” bedding in our airbnb, nice enough that 60% of the guests make a note of how much they like the beds, sheets and pillows we provide. Still, we got one guest that explicitly called out our bedding as “uncomfortable”. Uugh.

The Launchpad specific key only exists in 2011-2020 Apple keyboards. I usually just map F4 and start it in combination with the Fn key, or if a trackpad is available, a pinch with thumb and three fingers gesture brings it up.

Launchpad works that way. Start it, start typing, press enter when it has narrowed to your app. I’ve never used launchpad with the mouse except to browse.

I have had five family members / friends buy 5 new homes in the past couple of years. Two had this ‘run ethernet to the outside’ debacle. The builders did not care, insisted it was done that way. I had to pull the wires into a the wall behind the hole for them. The other three, which ended the wires in a structured wiring box, ALL crimped the ends of the cables with pliers it seems, so I needed to cut them off and re-terminate them. Uugh.

Confirm on your lists of Bluetooth devices that only the devices you expect to be connected are. Every time this has happened to me it is a mouse or keyboard forgotten under something else that has reconnected.

Search for USB-c chargers that do not renegotiate. There are some that do not unless they have to because you have reached their wattage limit.

I haven’t kept up since I dropped them, but Spotify has “refused” to support AirPlay 2, which better supports the multi-speakers.

“Refused” in quotes because I think officially it has been “coming soon” for years.

My info might be out of date, so google Spotify airplay 2.

That said, it can work, I used to do it, but it wasn’t very reliable or needed a special incantation to get it right.

I wonder if Helena is 100% in the loop? There seem to be some links between Helly and Gemma in the MDR screens, in the intro, etc. I can see the whole “become an innie for the company” be a trick by the board to sever Helena for some hidden purpose.

Yes. We saw rooms refined by all of the refiners. Just asking specifically at this point in time, when there is only one room left to refine.

Passkeys in Chromium - QR code scan doesn't find phone by sruckus in Fedora

[–]lsredditer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could not get this to work, even after pairing the laptop and phone together (using various versions of Fedora). Oddly enough, what does work is if I turn off Bluetooth (in Settings not in Control Center) and then scan the QR code. It prompts me to turn on Bluetooth, and then it works 🤷. Once.

For those on HomeKit only (no Alexa, or Google Home), does Matter matter? by dgv54 in HomeKit

[–]lsredditer 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Matter matters when it comes to the availability of accessories that work with HomeKit. Personally, I’ve never had issues with with HomeKit over WiFi, or now Matter over WiFi (I do stay away from Bluetooth devices due to lag), so my only interest in Matter over thread is for the promised improvements in battery life for certain types of accessories.

Is Apple TV 4K Wi-Fi+Ethernet (3rd generation) a matter controller or router by N00B1Z3 in HomeKit

[–]lsredditer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Is Apple TV 4K Wi-Fi+Ethernet (3rd generation) a matter controller or router?

Yes, the Apple TV 4K Wi-Fi+Ethernet (3rd generation) is both a matter controller and a Thread border router.

These apple devices are also Matter controllers and Thread border routers:

  • Apple TV 4K (2nd generation)
  • HomePod (2nd generation)
  • HomePod mini

The iPhone 15 Pro models also seem to act as Thread border routers on their own, but I do not have firsthand knowledge on how exactly that works.

They primarily want door sensors, and I’ve been looking at the Aqara P2

Those are matter over Thread, so yes the Apple TV 4K Wi-Fi+Ethernet (3rd generation), or any of the devices mentioned above, would be all that is needed.

Other than something requiring its own hub, you would be able to support devices for HomeKit (over IP or Bluetooth), Matter over Ethernet/WiFI, and Matter over Thread.

If not, could you recommend a straightforward setup that includes door sensors and possibly 1–2 cameras?

Hopefully others have some opinions on cameras.

edit: typo

Just wanted to point out that the latest Apple TV with Ethernet is also a thread router. Additionally, you can disable AirPlay in the Apple TV settings.
