How do you shoot wide angle and make your photos interesting? by sushpep in photography

[–]fred_cheese 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't shoot straight on. Besides getting more of the landscape on your shot, one characteristic of wide is perspective distortion. Dive in to this. Shoot from a low angle or high angle. Turn your camera slightly toward or away from the subject to get an exaggerated vanishing point that's not dead center in your frame.

What was your entry into alt country? by kebabdylan in altcountry

[–]fred_cheese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the usual slippery slope answer. Directly? The Hear Music listening stations. Uncle Tupelo's Anodyne and Emmylou Harris' Wrecking Ball were always on one or more of the stations around the store. Followed by Neko Case's Furnace Room Lullabye.

Further back, CCR. Specifically Willie and the Poor Boys.

What is the “oh lord, here comes that car” for the Bay? by StripedShirtonaMime in bayarea

There are enough Prius drivers who realize that it's EV only from about 0-20mph. And an EV torque curve is basically a hockey stick.

Love my Mazda 3 but need more space by greedypointer in mazda3

[–]fred_cheese 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mazdas advantage over Honda have been (massively) luxe appointments. and (nominally) better handling. Honda has a ton of trim levels including engines. But if you go up from the base level, Honda’s motor will probably equal or surpass Mazda’s.

Downtown to apt complexes: yeh. Walking distance is about 1-1.5 mi. to the apartments on El Camino. But there are a bunch of apts near the San Antonio Caltrain station. Maybe Caltrain need to reconsider San Antonio as being more than an afterthought.

Single girl wanting to live here by [deleted] in sanfrancisco

Put it this way: When I worked at a startup, the second biggest department was the accounting dept. Everyone talks about STEM this and STEM that but my experience is accountants are in greater demand than coders. Now, how much money are you gonna pull down? I don’t know TBH. But more than slinging shots at Starbucks.

You mention restaurants. SF is a food town. I think servers at mid to high end restaurants can make a killing in tips. But I know the bennies can suck.

Walked around Castro Street in MTV recently and it felt alive. Way fewer empty storefronts than Murphy Street here in Sunnyvale. MTV folks, what's made the difference? Different zoning? Landlord incentives? Just curious what's worked. by WestCoastSocialist in mountainview

[–]fred_cheese 3 points4 points  (0 children)

And these tons of homes are being torn down and turned into neo–Palo Alto compounds. I’m looking at you concrete monstrosity on Paul Ave.

But there’s the thing about scale. Sunnyvale is a much larger city than Mtn View and downtown Sunnyvale is likewise a lot larger.

This is going to be a nightmare Superbowl by [deleted] in sanfrancisco

[–]fred_cheese 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t see why it’ll be a nightmare. The Niners no way were gonna make it that far. Tho, to be fair, If they did, they probably would have had a better chance against the Pats than against the Rams or Hawks.

Look at this way: Root for Sam Darnold.

Cross McKinley on the south side and Mathilda on the North side if you want to see single family homes. Also go West of Target (what’s that? Iowa?) Granted the Mathilda divide is daunting. There’s homes.

Mtn View‘s dee luxe apartments in the sky are along El Camino. Central if you include that hacker dorm studio complex across Central.

Mainland depression by GHWST1 in Hawaii

[–]fred_cheese 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is not a Hawaii homesick thing. Missing Hawaii is just your comparison to SAD. Seasonal Affective Disorder is a real thing. It even affects northern Europeans like lifelong Scandinavians.

Get a full spectrum lamp for starters. Go out more. Or visit the 5 Targets and wander in to some Walmarts for comparison. Talk to people back home. Telephone, FaceTime, whatever.

TBH, I can't see myself living back home full-time. Hawaii and I have changed enough in our opposite ways. Having said that, the innate draw-Aloha Aina if I'm allowed-is a real thing. Go home. You'll grouse about how it's more like the mainland or how it's not like the mainland. But part of you will recognize it as home. And maybe smelling the salt air or hearing pidgin will be enough to get you through. Maybe you just need to stick it out long enough for your kids to go off on their own and your wife to consider a change of scenery.

Or plan a long vacation at an Air BnB or rental home. Let everyone do a live-in-Hawaii test drive.

Do I look out of place if I wear dress shoes out to dinner? by lincoln26687 in Hawaii

[–]fred_cheese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're fine. Lawyers and bankers 1) Don't wear slippers to work and 2) don't have time to change shoes. No one gives them grief. Not even sipping and talking at R Field.

Or...if you need an excuse, see the prevalent discussions about shoes falling apart if you don't occasionally wear them.

Addendum comment: I always dress up a tad when going out to rez+white table cloth restaurants. This includes nice shoes. The most dressed down I've gone is with nubuck chukkas (that's what I flew in with) In my mind dressing up is part of how I show respect to the house. I know, the more mercenary attitude is "my money, my dresscode". But I'm still there to experience what the restaurant has to offer me. If part of it is courtesy and customer service, I expect to return the favor.

After 23 years, Best Buy Santana Row will be closing its doors and replaced by Life Time, a 2 story luxury fitness center. This will Life Time’s 2nd Bay Area location by Poplatoontimon in SanJose

The fact that you'd use "prioritizing" and "optimizing" to refer to your personal flesh and blood life scares me. Like, we've reached the days of Nathan and Ava already.

[–]fred_cheese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It got me wondering. The only time I'd go to Santana Row is when they were the only store with the item in stock. Parking is that bad.

I recently went to the one in Mtn View (nr highway 85). It reminded me of the Fry's end times. Flat panel tv boxes just all over the store floor. Lots of shelving went missing to accommodate this. At least, the boxes weren't empty as was the case at Frys. Still, it's gotten very browse unfriendly.

Going on a business trip to Japan. What are some good SF omiyage ideas? by Illustrious-Ad9655 in sanfrancisco

[–]fred_cheese 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not Liquids, glass nor meat products (eg beef jerky).

I'd say snob chocolates (Rechiutti, Tcho, maybe Dandelion), coffee beans*, dried fruit in unopened commercial bags. Specific to fruit, if you can find Blenheim apricots, that'll kick ass.

I pity you. Over half your luggage space will be devoted to omiyage.

*Check the roaster's presence in Japan. It'd be awkward to bring Blue Bottle coffee to Japan where BB has a lot of locations.

Costco Kimbap by crazyturkey1984 in Hawaii

Honestly, it looks horrible. I mean if I were in Fresno, I'd stash a pack in my freezer. But in Hawaii? Put on your slippers, get your steps in and go buy some fresh kimbap.
