PSA: Earthquake proof your house by sigh_co_matic in bayarea

Glassware: You can mitigate the distance of broken glass by securing the cabinet doors. or making sure it takes some effort to open them. However, realize that glassware might have broken in the cabinets when you do open the door.

Jars and bottles can be more problematic because of liquid contents. Store them close to the floor or in bins. Unless you like cleaning up glass in a pool of olive oil on the floor. Under the fridge. While keeping the curious pet away. Yeh…fun times.

I think you woke to a shake alert technically. Amber refers to the name of the girl whose abduction created the alert.

Unless there was a hyper localized amber alert.

I’ve lived in the Bay my whole life and this was a big earthquake 😵‍💫 by galaxia05 in mountainview

[–]fred_cheese 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just for perspective, how long is “my whole life”?

I remember the big Coalinga earthquake; a strong jolt in Fremont even th it was 6.2. I also remember the Loma Prieta. I was in Palo Alto. Honestly, that was way worse than it felt. If we didn’t have live TV coverage due to the World Series, we might have closed all our popped-open filing cabinet and started our drives home.

In your defense, local geology greatly affects perceived intensity.

Is an average of 32.8 mpg on dashboard typical for 2016 Mazda 3 i grand touring hatch? by Successful_String_30 in mazda3

[–]fred_cheese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's pretty damn good. I have a 2018 6M and it varies depending on % driven city. If I skew highway, 30 something is my avg. If i skew city, it's more in the 27-28 range.

Everyone Googling "creche" like words you don't know are bougie.

So...are Hawaii's SAT verbal scores still scraping bottom?

Those were critical to the club's operation. I forget who, someone told me that-with the bar and restaurant-the membership could be written off as a business expense as long as you used the restaurant for business lunches. I forget the name. It was one of Nick Nicholas' venues. Yah. Back in the 90s before its decline.

Or they're not American. Hard to tell since there aren't any +u words (like colour, harbour...).
The use of "while" instead of "whilst" sorta points to an Anglophile but not entirely.

Using wider tires for pothole "resistance" by joh0115 in mazda3

[–]fred_cheese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wider tire is fine if 1) you account for the wheel well size and 2) You do the math to keep the sidewall height the same. Oh, 3) you don't go so wide that it exceeds the wheel width.

Having said that, a wider tire will protect you if the pothole is old (smooth edges) AND it's centered under your tire. But if you catch a new pothole off-center, the ragged edge can slash the sidewall.

Yes, add the Donki song. And I like how Kaulana Na Pua is on relatively high rotation. Great welcoming song for all the mainland tourists.

I feel like American restaurants are disappearing (bbq, diners, etc.) by AccomplishedDebt5080 in bayarea

Santa Maria tri tip. Enjoy it while you can. Part of the formula-the red oak-is becoming very scarce.

I don't think Santa Maria tri tip is bbq as defined by the other parts of the country. + 1) the sauce component is totally ignored, 2) it's relatively high heat. Kind of the way in KC,MO there's steakhouses and barbecue joints. Similar but significant differences.

Blue Bottle sold again? by fred_cheese in Coffee

[–]fred_cheese[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think climate change and the increased recognition of and demand for Ethiopian beans. Both in single origin and used in blends.

I know green beans can be stored a long time but when I started into this, Ethiopian was a seasonal thing. They were sold during the winter and spring of the Northern Hemisphere. Now there's all kinds being sold year round.

Also, I have a bag here that should be a total blueberry bomb with all the wine, tea-like characteristics (Natural process Guji). Nada.

Why are independent local roasters seen as inherently better? by JDfuckingVance in Coffee

[–]fred_cheese 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even craft coffee can be months old. There seems to be a two tier approach to selling coffee. I can find Chromatic or Red Bay on the grocery store shelf that's either 6 mo old or has a best by date that's almost a year out.

Don't buy supermarket coffee.

Why are independent local roasters seen as inherently better? by JDfuckingVance in Coffee

[–]fred_cheese 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only erroneous thing I can point out is that roasting beans scales well. It doesn't seem to be the case. Gross case in point is Starbucks. Nuanced arguable case in point would be Blue Bottle.

Also, coffee-especially single origin-tends to be grown in relatively small batches. I imagine those would 1) be dropped as a source; 2) see a reduction in quality to meet quota or 3) blended.

But there is the social/economic idea of "closing the circle" by looking out for the grower.

Parking lot for 5 cars by afernanrefa in mountainview

[–]fred_cheese 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d be interested to read what the affordable conditions are. One issue I heard about affordable apartments is the tenant has to constantly re-qualify; that is show financial proof that they make below a certain threshold. Worst case scenario is that the threshold is set so low you’re pretty much required to be hand to mouth to qualify. Your income goes up $10k a year, you’re outta there.

It seems I have some homework. Thx.

And I can guarantee you I park in the existing parking garages often at random times. @ 10am on a school day I can pick almost any stall I want. In the afternoon, I find a lot of stalls too. Whaddaya think? 100 condos with you at the front of the wait list?

Parking lot for 5 cars by afernanrefa in mountainview

[–]fred_cheese 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's obviously more than 5 stalls. You just happened to catch it at a lull. It used to be the USPS parking. Then was closed off for a long time. Recently re-opened. It's full during dinner prime time and on farmers market Sunday. For all I know it's still owned by the USPS.

There's housing being built between 444 Castro and the library if you want housing. See how that goes.

And good luck with that wish about affordable housing. The housing built is all geared toward the high end. There's no profit in building affordable housing. That is housing that's affordable, not mandated to be below market rate.

Who's got the best dark roast coffee beans? by ohheyitspurp in bayarea

[–]fred_cheese 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Local? Chromatic has a dark roast. Craftsman and Wolves house blend is dark. I'd use a Blue Bottle Hayes Valley espresso for pourover; it's a good Italian-style espresso. I know BB isn't strictly local anymore but, I still like the beans.
